    Usability testing in a library web site redesign project

    An intuitive library information gateway is critical to meeting the information needs of library users in the digital age. This article describes the process involved in redesigning a library Web site. In addition to first determining the goals and requirements for the library Web site, a user and task analysis was conducted for defining the library\u27s user base and types of tasks which users might be performing at the site. Usability testing methods, such as observational interviews, provided fresh insights about how users are interacting with the library Web interface as they approach various information seeking tasks. These usability studies uncovered problems related to unclear terminology, proper use of color, size and location of navigational links, and the need for context sensitive help, built-in redundancy, and clear and consistent navigation

    US government information: selected current issues in public access vs. private competition

    Web information systems are having a profound effect on the way information is being disseminated today. Current technological advances have caused many government agencies to re-evaluate their practice of contracting with private sector vendors who have traditionally repackaged and marketed the agency\u27s raw data. These new opportunities for government agencies wishing to make information publicly accessible have blurred the traditional distinctions between public and private dissemination activities. Low-cost public dissemination of information has resulted in private sector vendors arguing that public electronic distribution and publication creates unfair competition. New partnerships, such as the recent venture between the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) and the commercial search engine, Northern Light, in developing the ``usgovsearch\u27\u27 product are also being explored. From another viewpoint, library associations are strongly supporting legislation that would broaden,strengthen, and enhance public access to electronic government information. Key issues to be discussed are: (1) the debate concerning public vs. private access to government information; (2) Does electronic access to government information eliminate the need for printed documents? and (3) Joint efforts -- when should the government team up with private sector allies to charge for information services and access

    Effective Methods for Incorporating Problem-Based Learning into Library Instruction

    User-centered instruction that capitalizes on the computer competencies of Generation Y, while engaging them in team-based, active learning activities is the foundation of the Roger Williams University library instruction program. These sessions mirror new and evolving pedagogies designed to minimize the lecture and maximize student involvement in their own learning. Citing examples from classroom experience, two instruction librarians will demonstrate how to create and effectively use problem or case-based classroom activities in required writing and speech classes in a mid-sized liberal arts university. The main points will be: Developing the pedagogy underlying the problem-based activities; Establishing the goals of each instruction session; Identifying the ACRL Information Literacy Standards which are addressed in each exercise or activity; Writing or defining the problem or case; Identifying the appropriate resources to be used in the activity; Describing the process and procedures of the classroom activity; Collaborating with classroom faculty in order to create relevant activities; Describing the student outcomes of the exercises/activities. Attendees will learn the principles of PBL and how to incorporate them into a one-shot library instruction session using current topics and online resources. They will experience an active-learning exercise in which they develop their own problem related to one of their classes, define the ACRL Standards being addressed, and identify the expected learning outcomes

    Sustaining the Vision: Best Practices for Design, Implementation and Service

    Librarians from Roger Williams University developed a model of best practices for planning library space projects while planning the first phase of the Learning Commons. They visited and gathered data from 18 libraries with recently-reconfigured spaces, tapped into their collective wisdom, and distilled it to a list of pragmatic, universally applicable best practices. Using examples from their own project and those of the libraries they visited, the presentation describes how to lay the groundwork for planning, incorporate the lessons learned, and achieve buy-in for the project

    Planning Implementation Success of Syncope Clinical Practice Guidelines in the Emergency Department Using CFIR Framework

    Background and Objectives: Overuse and inappropriate use of testing and hospital admission are common in syncope evaluation and management. Though guidelines are available to optimize syncope care, research indicates that current clinical guidelines have not significantly impacted resource utilization surrounding emergency department (ED) evaluation of syncope. Matching implementation strategies to barriers and facilitators and tailoring strategies to local context hold significant promise for a successful implementation of clinical practice guidelines (CPG). Our team applied implementation science principles to develop a stakeholder-based implementation strategy. Methods and Materials: We partnered with patients, family caregivers, frontline clinicians and staff, and health system administrators at four health systems to conduct quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews for context assessment. The identification of implementation strategies was done by applying the CFIR-ERIC Implementation Strategy Matching Tool and soliciting stakeholders’ inputs. We then co-designed with patients and frontline teams, and developed and tested specific strategies. Results: A total of 114 clinicians completed surveys and 32 clinicians and stakeholders participated in interviews. Results from the surveys and interviews indicated low awareness of syncope guidelines, communication challenges with patients, lack of CPG protocol integration into ED workflows, and organizational process to change as major barriers to CPG implementation. Thirty-one patients and their family caregivers participated in interviews and expressed their expectations: clarity regarding their diagnosis, context surrounding care plan and diagnostic testing, and a desire to feel cared about. Identifying change methods to address the clinician barriers and patients and family caregivers expectations informed development of the multilevel, multicomponent implementation strategy, MISSION, which includes patient educational materials, mentored implementation, academic detailing, Syncope Optimal Care Pathway and a corresponding mobile app, and Lean quality improvement methods. The pilot of MISSION demonstrated feasibility, acceptability and initial success on appropriate testing. Conclusions: Effective multifaceted implementation strategies that target individuals, teams, and healthcare systems can be employed to plan successful implementation and promote adherence to syncope CPGs
