    GRBlog: A Database for Gamma-Ray Bursts

    GRBlog is an on-line database providing researchers with quick access to all information reported in the GCN Circulars. Users of the GRBlog web site (grad40.as.utexas.edu/grblog.php) can search the circulars and produce afterglow light curve plots, or compile data tables. The site also offers advanced search capabilities to aide in statistical studies or comparative research. Most of the GCNs have already been entered into the GRBlog database, with the remainder to follow shortly.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     APM z>4 QSO Survey: Distribution and Evolution of High Column Density HI Absorbers

    Eleven candidate damped Lya absorption systems were identified in 27 spectra of the quasars from the APM z>4 survey covering the redshift range 2.83.5). High resolution echelle spectra (0.8A FWHM) have been obtained for three quasars, including 2 of the highest redshift objects in the survey. Two damped systems have confirmed HI column densities of N(HI) >= 10^20.3 atoms cm^-2, with a third falling just below this threshold. We have discovered the highest redshift damped Lya absorber known at z=4.383 in QSO BR1202-0725. The APM QSOs provide a substantial increase in the redshift path available for damped surveys for z>3. We combine this high redshift sample with other quasar samples covering the redshift range 0.008 < z < 4.7 to study the redshift evolution and the column density distribution function for absorbers with log N(HI)>=17.2. In the HI column density distribution f(N)=kN^-beta we find evidence for breaks in the power law, flattening for 17.221.2. The column density distribution function for the data with log N(HI)>=20.3 is better fit with the form f(N)=(f*/N*)(N/N*)^-beta exp(-N/N*). Significant redshift evolution in the number density per unit redshift is evident in the higher column density systems with an apparent decline in N(z) for z>3.5.Comment: To appear in MNRAS.     Evolution of Neutral Gas at High Redshift -- Implications for the Epoch of Galaxy Formation

    Though observationally rare, damped Lya absorption systems dominate the mass density of neutral gas in the Universe. Eleven high redshift damped Lya systems covering 2.84 QSO Survey, extending these absorption system surveys to the highest redshifts currently possible. Combining our new data set with previous surveys we find that the cosmological mass density in neutral gas, omega_g, does not rise as steeply prior to z~2 as indicated by previous studies. There is evidence in the observed omega_g for a flattening at z~2 and a possible turnover at z~3. When combined with the decline at z>3.5 in number density per unit redshift of damped systems with column densities log N(HI)>21 atoms cm^-2, these results point to an epoch at z>3 prior to which the highest column density damped systems are still forming. We find that over the redshift range 2<z<4 the total mass in neutral gas is marginally comparable with the total visible mass in stars in present day galaxies. However, if one considers the total mass visible in stellar disks alone, ie excluding galactic bulges, the two values are comparable. We are observing a mass of neutral gas comparable to the mass of visible disk stars. Lanzetta, Wolfe & Turnshek (1995) found that omega_g(z~3.5) was twice omega_g(z~2), implying a much larger amount of star formation must have taken place between z=3.5 and z=2 than is indicated by metallicity studies. This created a `cosmic G-dwarf problem'. The more gradual evolution of omega_g we find alleviates this.     Mean velocities and Reynolds stresses upstream of a simulated wing-fuselage juncture

    Values of three mean velocity components and six turbulence stresses measured in a turbulent shear layer upstream of a simulated wing-fuselage juncture and immediately downstream of the start of the juncture are presented nd discussed. Two single-sensor hot-wire probes were used in the measurements. The separated region just upstream of the wing contains an area of reversed flow near the fuselage surface where the turbulence level is high. Outside of this area the flow skews as it passes around the body, and in this skewed region the magnitude and distribution of the turbulent normal and shear stresses within the shear layer are modified slightly by the skewing and deceleration of the flow. A short distance downstream of the wing leading edge the secondary flow vortext is tightly rolled up and redistributes both mean flow and turbulence in the juncture. The data acquisition technique employed here allows a hot wire to be used in a reversed flow region to indicate flow direction

    The Cambridge-Cambridge ROSAT Serendipity Survey - I. X-ray-luminous galaxies

    We report on the first results obtained from a new optical identification programme of 123 faint X-ray sources with SS(0.5--2keV)>2×1014\,{\rm keV)}>2\times 10^{-14}\,erg\,s1^{-1}\,cm2^{-2}\, serendipitously detected in {\it ROSAT} PSPC pointed observations. We have spectroscopically identified the optical counterparts to more than 100 sources in this survey. Although the majority of the sample (68 objects) are QSOs, we have also identified 12 narrow emission line galaxies which have extreme X-ray luminosities (1042<LX<1043.510^{42} < L_{\rm X} < 10^{43.5}\,erg\,s1^{-1}). Subsequent spectroscopy reveals them to be a mixture of starburst galaxies and Seyfert 2 galaxies in approximately equal numbers. Combined with potentially similar objects identified in the {\it Einstein} Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey, these X-ray-luminous galaxies exhibit a rate of cosmological evolution, LX(1+z)2.5±1.0L_{\rm X} \propto (1+z)^{2.5\pm1.0}, consistent with that derived for X-ray QSOs. This evolution, coupled with the steep slope determined for the faint end of the X-ray luminosity function (Φ(LX)LX1.9\Phi(L_{\rm X}) \propto L_{\rm X}^{-1.9}), implies that such objects could comprise 15--35 per cent of the soft (1--2\,keV)Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 7 pages including 5 figures; uuencoded compressed postscript; RGO-21

    A star-forming galaxy at z= 5.78 in the Chandra Deep Field South

    We report the discovery of a luminous z = 5.78 star-forming galaxy in the Chandra Deep Field South. This galaxy was selected as an ‘i-drop’ from the GOODS public survey imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys (object 3 in the work of Stanway, Bunker & McMahon 2003). The large colour of (i′−z′)AB = 1.6 indicated a spectral break consistent with the Lyman α forest absorption shortward of Lyman α at z≈ 6. The galaxy is very compact (marginally resolved with ACS with a half-light radius of 0.08 arcsec, so rhl 5. Our spectroscopic redshift for this object confirms the validity of the i′-drop technique of Stanway et al. to select star-forming galaxies atz≈ 6
