A problem facing most Iowa State students is deciding which textbooks to keep for future reference and which to sell to bolster their budget. As an answer to this problem, a survey was conducted in December among 30 students in a home management class as to the books they thought would be most valuable on their bookshelves. Here they are

viii, 197 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 153-181).Includes abstract and appendices. This thesis explores empirical relationships between three phenomena in a health care organization, namely transformational leadership, workplace spirituality and employee well-being. A mixed method research program was developed and implemented in the form of three studies. In the first study, multilevel modeling was used to analyze survey data from a sample of 273 health care workers and test a proposed mediation model. As hypothesized, regression and mediation analyses revealed the effects of transformational leadership on employees' emotional and spiritual well-being were fully mediated by workplace spirituality. In the second study, a field experiment with 243 health care workers in the same organization was used to test the longitudinal effects of a training intervention related to transformational leadership. Again, multilevel analyses were used to analyze survey data collected at two time intervals, with a three month time lapse, and demonstrated a significant main effect of training. As in the first study, subsequent regression and mediation analyses demonstrated support for the hypothesized mediation model, but only relative to employees' emotional well-being. In the final qualitative study, in-depth interviews were used to explore the experiences of a select group of seven leaders who had participated in the training study and experienced the greatest increases in mean leadership ratings. This study revealed a definite focus on two dimensions of transformational leadership behaviour, namely individualized consideration and intellectual stimulation. The interviews also revealed that the challenges faced by leaders implementing their goals were both personal and organizational. Participants identified numerous benefits from their training, including increased communication, improved collaboration and, in some cases, better work group relations. Based on the findings of all three studies, a research agenda is proposed to explore in greater detail various aspects of these findings. Implications for research and practice are also discussed

The Performance Assessment Framework: experiences and perceptions of NHS Scotland. A Report to the Analytical Service Division, Directorate of Performance Management and Finance, Scottish Executive Health Department

The new Performance Assessment Framework (PAF) was introduced in NHSScotland in October 2001 and used in the annual NHS Board Accountability Reviews in 2002 and 2003. The PAF was assigned three objectives outlined in Our National Health: (1) ‘Support and encourage sustained improvement in the performance of NHS Scotland by focussing on key measures in relation to health priorities.' (2) ‘Reinforce and support the role of the 15 NHS Boards in managing the performance of their local NHS systems.' (3) ‘Enable NHS Scotland to account systematically for its performance both locally and through the Scottish Executive to the Scottish Parliament and to the people of Scotland.' The success with which the PAF appears to be meeting those objectives forms the focus of this investigation. A key element determining how and whether the PAF affects the behaviour of decision-makers within the organisations and subsequently NHS Scotland performance is the perception of the PAF and the signals it generates. Thus it is important to determine what these perceptions and understandings are. It is necessary to capture these views in order to appreciate fully the impact of the PAF within the NHS in Scotland and to appraise its salience and power as a performance tool

Tutor Experiences with Facilitating Interprofessional Problem-Based Learning

    Get PDF
Background: This article describes tutors’ experiences with facilitating interprofessional problem-based learning (iPBL), a topic rarely discussed in the literature. We examined tutors’ perceptions of what it was like to tutor iPBL, including the rewarding and challenging aspects. We also reported differences between new and experienced tutors. Methods and Findings: The data presented in this article were collected using three versions of a paper-and-pencil survey (N = 77, N = 99, and N = 97 for each version of the survey, respectively) and six focus groups. Surveys were completed at the conclusion of iPBL modules. Both quantitative and qualitative results indicated that tutors found the experience of facilitating iPBL to be rewarding and encountered few challenges. Tutors felt the training they received prepared them well to tutor. They also felt that facilitating iPBL increased their knowledge in the topic area of the iPBL module and of other professional roles, that it enhanced their skills as facilitators, and that they enjoyed observing students learn. New tutors reported significantly more learning and skill development than experienced tutors. Conclusions: Four lessons were derived from our research: 1) use iPBL to offer IPE; 2) invest in tutor training and support; 3) help tutors trust the process; and 4) consider tutor recruitment and retention strategies
