    Inhibition of Neovascularization by Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles

    The present invention provides methods for reducing, reversing or inhibiting neovascularization of a tissue of a mammalian subject having a pathological condition involving neovascularization by administration in vivo of nanoceria particles (cerium oxide nanoparticles) to the subject. The method of the invention is useful, for example, for reducing, treating, reversing, or inhibiting neovascularization in ocular tissue such as the retina, macula, or the cornea; in skin; in synovial tissue; in intestinal tissue; or in bone. In addition, the method of the invention is useful for reducing or inhibiting neovascularization in a neoplasm (tumors), which can be benign or malignant, where malignant, can be a metastatic neoplasm. As such, the invention provides compositions, which contain nanoceria particles and are useful for reducing, treating, reversing, or inhibiting angiogenesis in a mammalian subject

    This paper addresses the dearth of research regarding why the golf industry, specifically in the United States, is stagnating and, in some cases, losing participants. We focus on why Millennials are not playing golf to the same extent as previous generations. This is a conceptual paper, drawing upon literature in sports, leisure, gender, and marketing to track the current trends in sports participation, leisure, and household production to determine the constraints that might limit golf participation. In this paper, we highlight gender as an important social structure and conceptual lens for understanding social changes, particularly among Millennials, which could also contribute to the reductions in golf participation. We offer practical solutions for the golf industry to grow, especially among the Millennial audience. We suggest, among other actions, that golf should improve its appeal to the entire family

    Andrew Melville, sacred chronology and world history: the Carmina Danielis 9 and the Antichristus

    The accepted view of the ecclesiastical reformer Andrew Melville (1545–1622) as the dynamic leader of the Presbyterian movement in Jacobean Scotland has been severely eroded in recent years, with particular criticism of the actual importance of his contribution to the Kirk and to Scottish higher education. While this reductionism has been necessary, it has resulted in an inversion of the overwhelmingly positive traditional image of Melville, and does not give us a rounded assessment of his life and works. This article attempts to partially redress this balance by looking at a neglected aspect of Melville's Latin writings, which showcase his talents as a humanist intellectual and biblical commentator. It focuses on two long poems that are both commentaries and paraphrases of Daniel and Revelation: the Carmina Danielis and the Antichristus. Through these poems, we see how Melville engaged with two problems exercising reformed theologians across Europe: the dating of key biblical events and the historicised meaning of prophecies within these texts. We also find evidence that Melville read widely among both contemporary and ancient commentators on both these issues

These reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in light-induced retina degeneration and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Cerium oxide nanoparticles have been used to promote the lifespan of retinal neurons and protect the neurons from apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide in vitro and in vivo. The neuronal protection in retinal cells is achieved by decreasing generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Thus, cerium oxide particles are used to promote the longevity of retinal neurons in vitro and mammalian cells in vivo

    Effect of Low-Carbohydrate, Unlimited Calorie Diet on the Treatment of Childhood Obesity: A Prospective Controlled Study

    Background: Childhood obesity has been recognized as the new epidemic in developed countries. Caloric restriction with physical activity is the main therapeutic treatment available for these children. We compared two different dietary protocols to assess treatment efficacy. Methods: Obese children from the Pediatric Endocrinology clinic were prospectively recruited for the study. Children and their parents were allowed to choose one of two dietary protocols: (1) carbohydrate restricted diet (\u3c30 g/day), with unlimited calories, protein, and fat (High protein, Low CHO Diet), and (2) calorie restricted diet (Low Cal Diet). Anthropometric data were measured at baseline and at the 2 month follow up appointment. Results: Thirty-seven children completed the study of whom 27 chose High Protein, Low CHO Diet and 10 chose Low Cal diet. No differences in gender ratio, age, or BMI were observed at baseline. At 2 months, children in the High Protein, Low CHO Diet lost an average of 5.21 ± 3.44 kg (p \u3c 0.001) and decreased their BMI by 2.42 ± 1.3 points (p \u3c 0.001), compared to the children in the Low Cal Diet who gained an average of 2.36 ± 2.54 kg and 1.00 point on the BMI value (p \u3c 0.001). Conclusions: A high protein, low carbohydrate, unlimited calorie diet was superior to a restricted calorie protocol for weight loss in obese school age children; moreover, compliance was better

    Proliferated LEO Architecture Enabling Beyond Line of Sight Fires (pLEO BLOS Fires)

    NPS NRP Project PosterChief of Naval Operations, ADM Gilday, and Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen Berger, directed modernization efforts across the Naval Services. The concept of Naval Operational Architecture (NOA) enables the development of additional beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) targeting and fires delivered from widely distributed points within and outside a near-peer's weapons engagement zones (WEZ). Research into proliferated low-earth orbiting communications satellites (pLEO) reveal an intersection with the Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2) priority and the Navy and Marine components leveraging efforts such as Task Force Overmatch (DEVSECOPS). There is an immediate need to develop requirements and analyze alternate architectures for delivering BLOS precision fires in future contested environments in the context of Great Power Competition. Faculty experience with space mission architecture design will be leveraged to advise students in achieving the following objectives: 1) Research and develop operational, functional objective and threshold requirements for a proliferated LEO systems within the JADC2 framework to enable BLOS precision fires. 2) Analyze alternative architectures for the requirements which enable BLOS precision fires in a contested environment. A phased approach will be used to meet the research objectives. First, a capabilities or system requirements-like document will be generated to include validation criteria and in-phase lessons learned. Second, standard aerospace modeling/simulation techniques will be used to define the mission and architecture requirements and analyze the alternatives for architectures enabling BLOS precision fires through a contested environment to include in-phase lessons learned.
