    Wrinkle ridges on Venusian plains: Indicators of shallow crustal stress orientations at local and regional scales

    The plains regions of Venus exhibit a complex array of structural features, including deformation belts of various types, wrinkle ridges, grabens, and enigmatic radar-bright linears. Probably the most pervasive of these structures are the wrinkle ridges, which appear to be morphologically identical to their counterparts on the Moon and Mars. Almost all workers agree that wrinkle ridges result from horizontal compressive stresses in the crust; they either are explained as flexural fold structures, or alternatively as scarps or folds related to reverse faults. Wrinkle ridges generally are narrow, have small amplitudes, and commonly are closely spaced as well, characteristics that imply a shallow crustal origin. If wrinkle ridges are due to horizontally directed compressive stresses in the shallow crust, as generally has been inferred, then the trends of these features provide a means to map both local and regional orientations of principal stresses in the uppermost part of the venusian crust: maximum compressive stress is normal to the ridges, minimum compressive stress is normal to the topographic surface, and thus the wrinkle ridge trends trace the orientation of the intermediate principal stress. Because there are few plains areas on Venus totally devoid of wrinkle ridges, it should be possible to establish a number of interesting relationships on a near-global scale by mapping the trends of wrinkle ridges wherever they occur. The present study is addressing three questions: (1) Do the trends of wrinkle ridges define domains that are large relative to the sizes of individual plains regions? If so, can these domains be related to large-scale topographic or geologic features? (2) Are regional trends of wrinkle ridges affected by local features such as coronae? If so, is it possible to determine the relative ages of the far-field and local stresses from detailed study of trend inheritance or superposition relationships? (3) What is the relationship between wrinkle ridges and the larger ridges that make up ridge belts

    Age of fracturing and mesa development in the Elysium Area, northern Martian plains

    One of the fundamental questions of Martian crustal history is the origin of the crustal dichotomy between northern plains and southern highlands. Hypotheses for the origin of the dichotomy may be constrained by global scale, geophysical considerations, or by detailed geological studies of the genesis and relative ages of materials and landforms in the northern plains of Mars and along the boundary between the plains and the highlands. This abstract summarizes progress on one aspect of a long-range geological study intended to constrain hypotheses for the dichotomy by tracing the history of the northern plains from the most recent events backward -- essentially the same approach used to understand old events in Earth history. Both the giant impact and the mantle convection models for the crustal dichotomy imply a major coeval fracturing event. As has been known for some time, the present dichotomy boundary lies well south of its original position, at least in some places. Nevertheless, there is severe fracturing of this present dichotomy boundary in many places.     Deformational sequence of a portion of the Michipicoten greenstone belt, Chabanel Township, Ontario

    Detailed mapping at a scale of one inch = 400 feet is being carried out within a fume kill, having excellent exposure, located in the southwestern portion of the Michipicoten Greenstone Belt near Wawa, Ontario. The rocks are metasediments and metavolcanics of lower greenschist facies. U-Pb geochronology indicates that they are at least 2698 + or - 11 Ma old. The lithologic packages strike northeast to northwest, but the dominant strike is approximately east-west. Sedimentary structures and graded bedding are well preserved, aiding in the structural interpretation of this multiply deformed area. At least six phases of deformation within a relatively small area of the Michipicoten Greenstone Belt have been tentatively identified. These include the following structural features in approximate order of occurrence: (0) soft-sediment structures; (1) regionally overturned rocks, flattened pebbles, bedding parallel cleavage, and early, approximately bedding parallel faults; (2) northwest to north striking cleavage; (3) northeast striking cleavage and associated folds, and at least some late movement on approximately bedding parallel faults; (4) north-northwest and northeast trending faults; and (5) diabase dikes and associated fracture cleavages. Minor displacement of the diabase dikes occurs on faults that appear to be reactivated older structures

    Preliminary structural model for the southwestern part of the Michipicoten greenstone belt, Ontario

    The southwestern part of the Michipicoten Greenstone Belt includes a 100 sq km fume kill extending northeastwards from the twon of Wawa, Ontario. Except for a strip along the Magpie River that is covered by Pleistocene gravels, outcrop in the fume kill averages about 30-50%. Within this area are all the major lithologic belts characteristic of the southwestern fourth of the Michipicoten Greenstone Belt. All of the area mapped to date lies within Chabenel Township, recently mapped at 4" = 1 mile. Following a brief reconnaissance in 1983, mapping at a scale of 1" = 400' was begun within and adjacent to the fume kill in 1984. Two objectives are sought (1) determinaion of the geometry and sequence of folding, faulting, cleavage development, and intrusion; and (2) defining and tracing lithologic packages, and evaluating the nature of the contacts between these packages.     Dark and light terrain materials in the Perrine and Nun Sulci quadrangles are divided into nine map units, four dark, and five light. These are placed in time-stratigraphic sequence primarily by means of embayment and cross-cutting relationships. Dark terrain is generally more heavily cratered and thus older that light terrain but, at least in these quadrangles, crater densities are not reliable indicators of relative ages among the four dark material units. The four mapped material units within dark terrain are: cratered dark materials (dc), grooved dark materials (dg), transitional dark materials (di), and dark materials, undivided (d). The five mapped units within light terrain are: intermediate light materials (li), grooved light materials (lg), irregularly grooved light materials (lgl), smooth light materials (ls), and light materials, undivided

    Professionalism in residency training: A compilation of desirable behaviors and a case-based comparison between pathologists in training and practice

    Professionalism is one of the most important competencies for physicians but is also the most difficult to teach, assess, and manage. To better understand professionalism in pathology, we surveyed practicing pathologists and pathology residents and fellows in training. We identified 12 key desirable attributes of professionalism. In addition, 8 case scenarios highlighting unprofessional behavior were presented, and results between pathologists in practice and in training were compared. No significant differences between attending pathologists and residents were identified in how these cases should be managed. Our study demonstrated remarkable concordance between practicing pathologists and residents as to what constitutes professionalism and how to manage unprofessional behavior. Our case-based approach can be a useful technique to teach professionalism to both pathologists in practice and in training

    Hole tunneling times in GaAs/AlAs double-barrier structures

    We have calculated hole tunneling times in GaAs/AlAs double-barrier structures taking quantum well band-mixing effects into account. Our results indicate that for sufficiently high hole temperatures and concentrations, band-mixing effects reduce average hole tunneling times from the pure heavy hole value to values comparable to electron tunneling times in the same structure. For very low hole temperatures and concentrations, band mixing is less important and average hole tunneling times should approach the pure heavy hole value. These results provide an explanation for previously reported experimental results in which electrons and holes were found to be characterized by very similar tunneling times

    Martian impact basins: Morphology differences and tectonic provinces

    Detailed geomorphic and structural mapping of five Martian basins and preliminary study of eleven other basins reveal four characteristic styles of modification that relate to the degree and age of past tectonic activity. Within regions that exhibit no evidence for tectonic activity, the modification style can be used to distinguish areas dominated by different exogenic processes. A framework for understanding these different styles of basin modification is provided

    Experimental and theoretical study of ultra-thin oxides

    We report on an experimental and theoretical study of transport through thin oxides. The experimental study was carried out on the tunnel switch diode (TSD) which consists of an MOS junction on top of a pn junction. The properties of the TSD depends critically on the properties of the tunnel oxide layer. Our results indicate that these devices can exhibit two different modes of behaviour depending on the stress history of the oxide. An unstressed device exhibits a thyristor-like I-V characteristic with fairly low current density. As the oxide is stressed, however, the I-V characteristic discontinuously shifts into a higher-current thyristor-like mode in which current transport appears to be highly non-uniform and depends strongly on stress history. This suggests a possible structural change in the oxide layer which is not completely destructive in that the device continues to function. We present a possible theoretical model of such a structural change in which microscopic filaments are generated in the oxide. Calculations of J-V curves for such structures with varying filament heights qualitatively match stressed MOS I-V curves found in the literature and qualitatively explain the dual-mode behaviour of the TSD
