Plans for a livable home provide for adequate storage. Plenty of good storage space will save time and energy for the family and will simplify home life. Most houses built fifty or more years ago have very few closets. Many of these houses are still being used and need more storage space. The trend is for more built-ins-many and different kinds of closets, cabinets, chests and storage walls. Some of these storage walls are portable but look built-in. Whether you are building new, remodeling, or trying to make your home more livable, plan for lots of good storage. It may mean as much as the addition of another room in your house. This bulletin gives workable plans for closets and storage spaces. Basic dimensions are given. The dimensions may easily be adapted to suit individual cases

There are only 24 hours a day. No matter how hard we try we cannot make more. Time cannot be found, spent or saved it can only be used. Time may be used wisely to gain many desired satisfactions, or it may be used unwisely with few pleasant results. If we want to use time wisely and save effort, we must be willing to admit there is room for improvement. We must also be willing to change from the old in the rut way to a new way of doing our job. Each of us sets our own pattern of housekeeping. Changing times call for changing patterns. We change our clothing styles-why not our working styles. The way you do your work has a direct relationship to the length of your working day and how you feel at the end of that day. Can you improve the way of doing your work so that you can get it done satisfactorily and keep well and strong doing it? We are sure you can. Why not study your tasks to see whether you could do them in a shorter, better, and easier way. Those who make a practice of planning are likely to accomplish more. This is not guess work. Many studies have shown that homemakers with the ability to manage well do accomplish greater goals

Christmas Gifts to Make for 1950

Do you remember when families put up the Christmas tree behind the closed double doors of the front parlor? For days the adults hurried in and out with mysterious looks and arms filled with surprises. But the children were barred. When all was ready the doors were thrown open and the fun was supposed to begin. At some time in our generation someone realized that the fun didn’t begin at this point at all. It had been going on for days, behind the parlor doors. We woke up to the fact that the children would have far more fun if they were let into the parlor to help and the same thing is true about the fund of Santa Claus. It is more beautiful to think of Santa as a symbol of the Love and Good Will that is all about us at Christmas time. Children realize that if they have this spirit they, too, can be Santa Clauses. He is no longer a trick to be played on them, but a lovely secret to be shared. No one likes to seem to be made a fool and children may feel this strongly when the myth is revealed. All families have traditions for this season. The most satisfying is when fiving love and kindness is emphasized rather than receiving presents. Opening the gifts is such fun and over so soon. If one gift is opened at a time it will last longer. If small children have too many toys at once, soon nothing pleases them. Save a few things to be opened late in the day, thus Christmas will last all day instead of an hour or so. Children will be richer is taught to enjoy giving as much as receiving – by not just believing in but being Santa Claus. With this in mind the family will be Santa Claus and make things for family and friends
