Field dependence of electronic recoil signals in a dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber

We present measurements of light and charge signals in a dual-phase time projection chamber at electric fields varying from 10 V/cm up to 500 V/cm and at zero field using 511 keV gamma rays from a $^{22}$Na source. We determine the drift velocity, electron lifetime, diffusion constant, and light and charge yields at 511 keV as a function of the electric field. In addition, we fit the scintillation pulse shape to an effective exponential model, showing a decay time of 43.5 ns at low field that decreases to 25 ns at high fields.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

The essay as a lens on transition to university: student and staff perceptions of essay writing

The interplay between student and teacher expectations about the requirements for successful learning in higher education (HE) can impact on successful student outcomes. This study aims to identify and understand the expectations that first year university students have towards essay production during their acculturation to HE. By examining the expectations their teachers have towards essay production the extent of the alignment between the teacher and student expectations can be investigated. Furthermore, this study tentatively explores the impact that diverse educational backgrounds have on the formation of expectations for essay production between students and teachers in UK HE. This study identifies that although there are some areas of alignment between expectations of students and teachers, there are important differences related to plagiarism, interpreting essay questions, understanding marking criteria and the availability of writing support. The greatest differences appear not so much related to different educational backgrounds, but instead with time spent in higher education

The Journey to SoTL: Institutionally Supporting a Transition to Scholars of Teaching and Learning

The concept of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is now being increasingly used as a tool to evidence excellence in teaching (Hutchings & Shulman, 1999; Kreber, 2002), support for academic promotion (Hutchings et al, 2011) and professional recognition within UK Higher Education (UKPSF, 2011). However, SoTL is not yet fully embedded in the typical academic role in the UK. In an environment where research is often ‘king’ the recent survey by Pritchard & McGowan (2016) demonstrates that even with growing recognition for teaching in universities, SoTL is often seen as the poorer sibling of REF-able research, and poorly understood (Gunn et al, 2014). Despite this, the value, impact and esteem associated with SoTL is growing with suggestions that SoTL should become better defined and ‘REF-able’, and that universities should act to better support and incentivise the practice of SoTL and its growth in institutions (Fanghanel et al, 2016). So how can SoTL capacity be grown within a research-intensive university in the UK and to what extent can a shared understanding of SoTL, along with a sustained engagement in SoTL be successfully cultivated? This study explores these issues by examining the perceptions of academic staff related to SoTL whilst studying a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice, a professional development programme related to teaching and learning in higher education, and determining the impact of learning related to SoTL on sustained engagement in the activity

How Messages about COVID-19 May Have Affected People’s Sense of Threat and Mental Health

COVID-19 has had profound effects on many physical, mental and social aspects of health. This study examined people’s fears and concerns about the virus, their experiences of being subjected to expert opinion and media portrayals of suffering from the virus, experiences of lockdown, and hopes and doubts for the future. We also examined how these relate to symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. 180 participants completed an online survey exploring the themes of the study. Results suggest that in addition to concerns of catching the virus themselves, participants were more concerned with passing it on to others. People found information provided by experts at times contradictory and confusing. There was a strong endorsement that the media exploited suffering and while there was a high desire to move to a more compassionate ‘caring and sharing world’, there were strong doubts that this would happen or that politicians would be able to navigate to that. More research is needed on how to present information about high levels of threat, tragic events and processes in order to avoid adding to, rather than reducing mental health difficulties, and generating unhelpful behaviours
