Investigation of nickel hydrogen battery technology for the RADARSAT spacecraft
The low Earth orbit (LEO) operations of the RADARSAT spacecraft require high performance batteries to provide energy to the payload and platform during eclipse period. Nickel Hydrogen cells are currently competing with the more traditional Nickel Cadmium cells for high performance spacecraft applications at geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) and Leo. Nickel Hydrogen cells appear better suited for high power applications where high currents and high Depths of Discharge are required. Although a number of GEO missions have flown with Nickel Hydrogen batteries, it is not readily apparent that the LEO version of the Nickel Hydrogen cell is able to withstand the extended cycle lifetime (5 years) of the RADARSAT mission. The problems associated with Nickel Hydrogen cells are discussed in the contex of RADARSAT mission and a test program designed to characterize cell performance is presented

Localization transitions in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics
We study the localization transitions which arise in both one and two
dimensions when quantum mechanical particles described by a random
Schr\"odinger equation are subjected to a constant imaginary vector potential.
A path-integral formulation relates the transition to flux lines depinned from
columnar defects by a transverse magnetic field in superconductors. The theory
predicts that the transverse Meissner effect is accompanied by stretched
exponential relaxation of the field into the bulk and a diverging penetration
depth at the transition.Comment: 4 pages (latex) with 3 figures (epsf) embedded in the text using the

Nonequilibrium phase transition in a driven Potts model with friction
We consider magnetic friction between two systems of -state Potts spins
which are moving along their boundaries with a relative constant velocity .
Due to the interaction between the surface spins there is a permanent energy
flow and the system is in a steady state which is far from equilibrium. The
problem is treated analytically in the limit (in one dimension, as
well as in two dimensions for large- values) and for and finite by
Monte Carlo simulations in two dimensions. Exotic nonequilibrium phase
transitions take place, the properties of which depend on the type of phase
transition in equilibrium. When this latter transition is of first order, a
sequence of second- and first-order nonequilibrium transitions can be observed
when the interaction is varied.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, one journal reference adde
Entropy and Correlation Functions of a Driven Quantum Spin Chain
We present an exact solution for a quantum spin chain driven through its
critical points. Our approach is based on a many-body generalization of the
Landau-Zener transition theory, applied to fermionized spin Hamiltonian. The
resulting nonequilibrium state of the system, while being a pure quantum state,
has local properties of a mixed state characterized by finite entropy density
associated with Kibble-Zurek defects. The entropy, as well as the finite spin
correlation length, are functions of the rate of sweep through the critical
point. We analyze the anisotropic XY spin 1/2 model evolved with a full
many-body evolution operator. With the help of Toeplitz determinants calculus,
we obtain an exact form of correlation functions. The properties of the evolved
system undergo an abrupt change at a certain critical sweep rate, signaling
formation of ordered domains. We link this phenomenon to the behavior of
complex singularities of the Toeplitz generating function.Comment: 16 pgs, 7 fg
Crossover between aperiodic and homogeneous semi-infinite critical behaviors in multilayered two-dimensional Ising models
We investigate the surface critical behavior of two-dimensional multilayered
aperiodic Ising models in the extreme anisotropic limit. The system under
consideration is obtained by piling up two types of layers with respectively
and spin rows coupled via nearest neighbor interactions and
, where the succession of layers follows an aperiodic sequence. Far
away from the critical regime, the correlation length is smaller
than the first layer width and the system exhibits the usual behavior of an
ordinary surface transition. In the other limit, in the neighborhood of the
critical point, diverges and the fluctuations are sensitive to the
non-periodic structure of the system so that the critical behavior is governed
by a new fixed point. We determine the critical exponent associated to the
surface magnetization at the aperiodic critical point and show that the
expected crossover between the two regimes is well described by a scaling
function. From numerical calculations, the parallel correlation length
is then found to behave with an anisotropy exponent which
depends on the aperiodic modulation and the layer widths.Comment: LaTeX file, 9 pages, 8 eps figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Vortex Pinning and Non-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics
A delocalization phenomenon is studied in a class of non-Hermitian random
quantum-mechanical problems. Delocalization arises in response to a
sufficiently large constant imaginary vector potential. The transition is
related to depinning of flux lines from extended defects in type-II
superconductors subject to a tilted external magnetic field. The physical
meaning of the complex eigenvalues and currents of the non-Hermitian system is
elucidated in terms of properties of tilted vortex lines. The singular behavior
of the penetration length describing stretched exponential screening of a
perpendicular magnetic field (transverse Meissner effect), the surface
transverse magnetization, and the trapping length are determined near the
flux-line depinning point.Comment: 2-column 27-pages RevTex file with 35 eps figure files embedded.
