Is Entrepreneurial Success Predictable? An Ex-Ante Analysis of the Character-Based Approach
This paper empirically analyzes whether the character-based approach, which focuses on the personality structure and the human capital of business founders, allows prediction of entrepreneurial success. A unique data set is used consisting of 414 persons whose personal characteristics were analyzed by different methods, namely an one-day assessment center (AC) and a standardized questionnaire, before they launched their business. Results are partly unexpected and weaker than previous ex-post findings: first, we found correlations between the AC data and the questionnaire in one subgroup only. Second, the predictive power of the AC data is slightly better than that of the questionnaire, but lower than expected in theory. Interestingly, for those subgroups where the AC data have low predictive power, the questionnaire does better. Third, when success is measured in terms of employees hired, the character-based approach is a poor predictor. Copyright 2008 The Authors.

Templated Self-Assembly in Three Dimensions Using Magnetic Levitation
Although self-assembly (SA) in two dimensions (2D) is highly developed (especially using surfaces as a templates), SA in three dimensions (3D) has been more difficult. This paper describes a strategy for SA in 3D of diamagnetic plastic objects (mm- to cm-sized in this work, but in principle in sizes from [similar]10 μm to m) supported in a paramagnetic fluid by a non-uniform magnetic field. The magnetic field and its gradient levitate the objects, template their self-assembly, and influence the shape of the assembled cluster. The structure of the 3D assembling objects can be further directed using hard mechanical templates—either the walls of the container or co-levitating components—which coincide spatially with the soft template of the magnetic field gradient. Mechanical agitation anneals the levitating clusters; the addition of photocurable adhesive, followed by UV illumination, can permanently fuse components together.Chemistry and Chemical Biolog
Two-step contribution to the spin-longitudinal and spin-transverse cross sections of the quasielastic (p,n) reactions
The two-step contribution to the spin-longitudinal and the spin-transverse
cross sections of ^{12}C,^{40}Ca(p,n) reactions at 494 MeV and 346 MeV is
calculated. We use a plane-wave approximation and evaluate the relative
contributions from the one-step and the two-step processes. We found that the
ratios of the two-step to the one-step processes are larger in the
spin-transverse cross sections than in the spin-longitudinal ones. Combining
these results with the distorted-wave impulse approximation (DWIA) results we
obtained considerable two-step contributions to the spin-longitudinal and the
spin-transverse cross sections. The two-step processes are important in
accounting for the underestimation of the DWIA results for the
spin-longitudinal and the spin-transverse cross sections.Comment: LaTeX 11 pages, 10 figure
Experimental demonstration of a squeezing enhanced power recycled Michelson interferometer for gravitational wave detection
Interferometric gravitational wave detectors are expected to be limited by
shot noise at some frequencies. We experimentally demonstrate that a power
recycled Michelson with squeezed light injected into the dark port can overcome
this limit. An improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of 2.3dB is measured
and locked stably for long periods of time. The configuration, control and
signal readout of our experiment are compatible with current gravitational wave
detector designs. We consider the application of our system to long baseline
interferometer designs such as LIGO.Comment: 4 pages 4 figure
Genomic comparison of diverse Salmonella serovars isolated from swine.
Food animals act as a reservoir for many foodborne pathogens. Salmonella enterica is one of the leading pathogens that cause food borne illness in a broad host range including animals and humans. They can also be associated with a single host species or a subset of hosts, due to genetic factors associated with colonization and infection. Adult swine are often asymptomatic carriers of a broad range of Salmonella servoars and can act as an important reservoir of infections for humans. In order to understand the genetic variations among different Salmonella serovars, Whole Genome Sequences (WGS) of fourteen Salmonella serovars from swine products were analyzed. More than 75% of the genes were part of the core genome in each isolate and the higher fraction of gene assign to different functional categories in dispensable genes indicated that these genes acquired for better adaptability and diversity. High concordance (97%) was detected between phenotypically confirmed antibiotic resistances and identified antibiotic resistance genes from WGS. The resistance determinants were mainly located on mobile genetic elements (MGE) on plasmids or integrated into the chromosome. Most of known and putative virulence genes were part of the core genome, but a small fraction were detected on MGE. Predicted integrated phage were highly diverse and many harbored virulence, metal resistance, or antibiotic resistance genes. CRISPR (Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) patterns revealed the common ancestry or infection history among Salmonella serovars. Overall genomic analysis revealed a great deal of diversity among Salmonella serovars due to acquired genes that enable them to thrive and survive during infection

Externally Applied Electric Fields up to 1.6 × 10 5 V/m Do Not Affect the Homogeneous Nucleation of Ice in Supercooled Water
The freezing of water can initiate at electrically conducting electrodes kept at a high electric potential or at charged electrically insulating surfaces. The microscopic mechanisms of these phenomena are unknown, but they must involve interactions between water molecules and electric fields. This paper investigates the effect of uniform electric fields on the homogeneous nucleation of ice in supercooled water. Electric fields were applied across drops of water immersed in a perfluorinated liquid using a parallel-plate capacitor; the drops traveled in a microchannel and were supercooled until they froze due to the homogeneous nucleation of ice. The distribution of freezing temperatures of drops depended on the rate of nucleation of ice, and the sensitivity of measurements allowed detection of changes by a factor of 1.5 in the rate of nucleation. Sinusoidal alternation of the electric field at frequencies from 3 to 100 kHz prevented free ions present in water from screening the electric field in the bulk of drops. Uniform electric fields in water with amplitudes up to (1.6 ± 0.4) × 105 V/m neither enhanced nor suppressed the homogeneous nucleation of ice. Estimations based on thermodynamic models suggest that fields in the range of 107−108 V/m might cause an observable increase in the rate of nucleation.Chemistry and Chemical Biolog
