Informing investment to reduce inequalities: a modelling approach
Background: Reducing health inequalities is an important policy objective but there is limited quantitative information about the impact of specific interventions.
Objectives: To provide estimates of the impact of a range of interventions on health and health inequalities.
Materials and methods: Literature reviews were conducted to identify the best evidence linking interventions to mortality and hospital admissions. We examined interventions across the determinants of health: a ‘living wage’; changes to benefits, taxation and employment; active travel; tobacco taxation; smoking cessation, alcohol brief interventions, and weight management services. A model was developed to estimate mortality and years of life lost (YLL) in intervention and comparison populations over a 20-year time period following interventions delivered only in the first year. We estimated changes in inequalities using the relative index of inequality (RII).
Results: Introduction of a ‘living wage’ generated the largest beneficial health impact, with modest reductions in health inequalities. Benefits increases had modest positive impacts on health and health inequalities. Income tax increases had negative impacts on population health but reduced inequalities, while council tax increases worsened both health and health inequalities. Active travel increases had minimally positive effects on population health but widened health inequalities. Increases in employment reduced inequalities only when targeted to the most deprived groups. Tobacco taxation had modestly positive impacts on health but little impact on health inequalities. Alcohol brief interventions had modestly positive impacts on health and health inequalities only when strongly socially targeted, while smoking cessation and weight-reduction programmes had minimal impacts on health and health inequalities even when socially targeted.
Conclusions: Interventions have markedly different effects on mortality, hospitalisations and inequalities. The most effective (and likely cost-effective) interventions for reducing inequalities were regulatory and tax options. Interventions focused on individual agency were much less likely to impact on inequalities, even when targeted at the most deprived communities
Tunneling magnetoresistance in diluted magnetic semiconductor tunnel junctions
Using the spin-polarized tunneling model and taking into account the basic
physics of ferromagnetic semiconductors, we study the temperature dependence of
the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in the diluted magnetic semiconductor
(DMS) trilayer heterostructure system (Ga,Mn)As/AlAs/(Ga,Mn)As. The
experimentally observed TMR ratio is in reasonable agreement with our result
based on the typical material parameters. It is also shown that the TMR ratio
has a strong dependence on both the itinerant-carrier density and the magnetic
ion density in the DMS electrodes. This can provide a potential way to achieve

Ion Collisions in Very Strong Electric Fields
A Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) simulation has been made of
processes of charge exchange and ionization between an hydrogen atom and fully
stripped ions embedded in very strong static electric fields (
V/m), which are thought to exist in cosmic and laser--produced plasmas.
Calculations show that the presence of the field affects absolute values of the
cross sections, enhancing ionization and reducing charge exchange. Moreover,
the overall effect depends upon the relative orientation between the field and
the nuclear motion. Other features of a null-field situation, such as scaling

Tasmania possesses a rich maritime heritage. Since European settlement, the Tasmanian economy has been reliant on its close links with the sea for trade. The unpolluted waters off its coastline support a substantial wild fishing industry.
Tasmanians have always enjoyed access to quality seafood. Until the 1970s, wild fisheries were the only significant source of revenue from fishing in the State. A natural progression of the Tasmanian's close relationship with the sea has been the development of marine aquaculture. After initial success with oyster and mussel farming in the 1970s, Atlantic salmon farming commenced in 1986. More recently, marine farming ventures have explored scallop, abalone and striped trumpeter aquaculture
Effect of exercise intensity and volume on persistence of insulin sensitivity during training cessation
Effect of exercise intensity and volume on persistence of insulin sensitivity during training cessation. J Appl Physiol 106: 1079â 1085, 2009. The purpose of this study was to determine whether exercise prescriptions differing in volume or intensity also differ in their ability to retain insulin sensitivity during an ensuing period of training cessation. Sedentary, overweight/obese subjects were assigned to one of three 8-mo exercise programs: 1) low volume/moderate intensity [equivalent of 12 miles/wk, 1,200 kcal/wk at 40-55% peak O2 consumption (VO2peak), 200 min exercise/wk], 2) low volume/vigorous intensity (12 miles/wk, 1,200 kcal/wk at 65-80% VO2peak, 125 min/wk), and 3) high volume/vigorous intensity (20 miles/wk, 2,000 kcal/wk at 65-80% VO2peak, 200 min/wk). Insulin sensitivity (intravenous glucose tolerance test, SI) was measured when subjects were sedentary and at 16-24 h and 15 days after the final training bout. SI increased with training compared with the sedentary condition (P less than or equal to 0.05) at 16-24 h with all of the exercise prescriptions. SI decreased to sedentary, pretraining values after 15 days of training cessation in the low-volume/vigorous-intensity group. In contrast, at 15 days SI was significantly elevated compared with sedentary (P less than or equal to 0.05) in the prescriptions utilizing 200 min/wk (low volume/moderate intensity, high volume/vigorous intensity). In the high-volume/vigorous-intensity group, indexes of muscle mitochondrial density followed a pattern paralleling insulin action by being elevated at 15 days compared with pretraining; this trend was not evident in the low-volume/moderateintensity group. These findings suggest that in overweight/obese subjects a relatively chronic persistence of enhanced insulin action may be obtained with endurance-oriented exercise training; this persistence, however, is dependent on the characteristics of the exercise training performed

Resting-State Brain Functional Connectivity Is Altered in Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for Alzheimer disease (AD). Populations at risk for AD show altered brain activity in the default mode network (DMN) before cognitive dysfunction. We evaluated this brain pattern in T2DM patients. We compared T2DM patients (n = 10, age = 56 ± 2.2 years, fasting plasma glucose [FPG] = 8.4 ± 1.3 mmol/L, HbA1c = 7.5 ± 0.54%) with nondiabetic age-matched control subjects (n = 11, age = 54 ± 1.8 years, FPG = 4.8 ± 0.2 mmol/L) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate functional connectivity strength among DMN regions. We also evaluated hippocampal volume, cognition, and insulin sensitivity by homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Control subjects showed stronger correlations versus T2DM patients in the DMN between the seed (posterior cingulate) and bilateral middle temporal gyrus (β = 0.67 vs. 0.43), the right inferior and left medial frontal gyri (β = 0.75 vs. 0.54), and the left thalamus (β = 0.59 vs. 0.37), respectively, with no group differences in cognition or hippocampal size. In T2DM patients, HOMA-IR was inversely correlated with functional connectivity in the right inferior frontal gyrus and precuneus. T2DM patients showed reduced functional connectivity in the DMN compared with control subjects, which was associated with insulin resistance in selected brain regions, but there were no group effects of brain structure or cognition
Vitamin D and subsequent all-age and premature mortality: a systematic review
<br>Background:
All-cause mortality in the population < 65 years is 30% higher in Glasgow than in equally deprived Liverpool and Manchester. We investigated a hypothesis that low vitamin D in this population may be associated with premature mortality via a systematic review and meta-analysis.</br>
<br>Methods:
Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library and grey literature sources were searched until February 2012 for relevant studies. Summary statistics were combined in an age-stratified meta-analysis.</br>
<br>Results:
Nine studies were included in the meta-analysis, representing 24,297 participants, 5,324 of whom died during follow-up. The pooled hazard ratio for low compared to high vitamin D demonstrated a significant inverse association (HR 1.19, 95% CI 1.12-1.27) between vitamin D levels and all-cause mortality after adjustment for available confounders. In an age-stratified meta-analysis, the hazard ratio for older participants was 1.25 (95% CI 1.14-1.36) and for younger participants 1.12 (95% CI 1.01-1.24).</br>
<br>Conclusions:
Low vitamin D status is inversely associated with all-cause mortality but the risk is higher amongst older individuals and the relationship is prone to residual confounding. Further studies investigating the association between vitamin D deficiency and all-cause mortality in younger adults with adjustment for all important confounders (or using randomised trials of supplementation) are required to clarify this relationship.</br>
Observations of the Antarctic polar front during FDRAKE 76 : a cruise report
Figures 37 and 38 have been reduced from their original size for the purpose of scanning.During March/April 1976 the small-scale structure of the Antarctic Polar Front was observed in the Drake Passage. The
observations were part of the International Southern Ocean Studies (ISOS) program called FDRAke 76. The purpose of the
program was to obtain densely sampled measurements of temperature,
salinity, dissolved oxygen, and chemical nutrients in
the Polar Front Zone (PFZ) and pilot measurements of horizontal
and vertical velocities in order to explain the above scalar
variability. The PFZ is a region where Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters intermingle and presumably mix to affect the
properties of Antarctic Intermediate Water. A report on the
third leg of Cruise 107 of the R. V. THOMPSON is presented as
well as a description of the measurements and a preliminary
report of the data. A feature of interest is the pinching off
of a northward meander of the circumpolar current system into
a cyclonic ring of Antarctic Waters.Prepared for the National Science Foundation, Office
