Absolute differential cross sections for electron-impact excitation of CO near threshold: II. The Rydberg states of CO
Absolute differential cross sections for electron-impact excitation of Rydberg states of CO have been measured from threshold to 3.7 eV above threshold and for scattering angles between 20° and 140°. Measured excitation functions for the b 3Σ+, B 1Σ+ and E 1π states are compared with cross sections calculated by the Schwinger multichannel method. The behaviour of the excitation functions for these states and for the j 3Σ+ and C 1Σ+ states is analysed in terms of negative-ion states. One of these resonances has not been previously reported
Parafoveal OCT Angiography Features in Diabetic Patients without Clinical Diabetic Retinopathy: A Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis
Purpose. To evaluate the capacity of OCT angiography (OCTA) for detecting infraclinical lesions in parafoveal capillaries in diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy (DR). Methods. This prospective observational cross-sectional case-control study analyzed the superficial and deep capillary plexuses (SCP and DCP) on macular OCTA scans (3 × 3 mm) centered on the fovea. We compared 22 diabetic patients (34 eyes included) without DR diagnosis on color fundus photographs, with 22 age- and gender-matched nondiabetic controls (40 eyes included). Qualitative analysis concerned morphological ischemic capillary alterations. Quantitative analysis measured foveal avascular zone (FAZ) size, parafoveal capillary density, and enlargement coefficient of FAZ between SCP and DCP. Results. Neither the qualitative nor quantitative parameters were significantly different between both groups. No microaneurysms or venous tortuosity was observed in any of the analyzed images. On the SCP, the mean FAZ area was 0.322 ± 0.125 mm2 in diabetic patients and 0.285 ± 0.150 mm2 in controls, P=0.31. On the DCP, the mean FAZ area was 0.444 ± 0.153 mm2 in cases and 0.398 ± 0.138 mm2 in controls, P=0.20. Conclusion. OCTA did not detect infraclinical qualitative or quantitative differences in parafoveal capillaries of diabetic patients without DR in comparison with nondiabetic controls

Single-cell genomics identifies cell type-specific molecular changes in autism.
Despite the clinical and genetic heterogeneity of autism, bulk gene expression studies show that changes in the neocortex of autism patients converge on common genes and pathways. However, direct assessment of specific cell types in the brain affected by autism has not been feasible until recently. We used single-nucleus RNA sequencing of cortical tissue from patients with autism to identify autism-associated transcriptomic changes in specific cell types. We found that synaptic signaling of upper-layer excitatory neurons and the molecular state of microglia are preferentially affected in autism. Moreover, our results show that dysregulation of specific groups of genes in cortico-cortical projection neurons correlates with clinical severity of autism. These findings suggest that molecular changes in upper-layer cortical circuits are linked to behavioral manifestations of autism
Cool and gusty, with a chance of rain: Dynamics of multiphase CGM around massive galaxies in the Romulus simulations
Using high-resolution Romulus simulations, we explore the origin and
evolution of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) in the zone 0.1 1 around massive central galaxies in
group-scale halos. We find that the CGM is both multiphase and highly dynamic.
Investigating the dynamics, we identify seven patterns of evolution. We show
that these are robust and detected consistently across various conditions.
There are two pathways by which the gas cools: (1) filamentary cooling inflows
and (2) condensations forming from rapidly cooling density perturbations. In
our cosmological simulations, the perturbations are mainly seeded by orbiting
substructures. We find that condensations can form even when the median
of the X-ray emitting gas is above the
canonical threshold of 10 or 20. Strong amplitude perturbations can provoke
runaway cooling regardless of the state of the background gas. We also find
perturbations whose local ratios drop below
the threshold but which do not condense. Rather, the ratios fall to some
minimum value and then bounce. These are weak perturbations that are
temporarily swept up in satellite wakes and carried to larger radii. Their
ratios decrease because the denominator
() is increasing, not because the numerator ()
is decreasing. For structures forming hierarchically, our study highlights the
challenge of using a simple threshold argument to infer the CGM's evolution. It
also highlights that the median hot gas properties are suboptimal determinants
of the CGM's state and dynamics. Realistic CGM models must factor in the
effects and after-effects of mergers and orbiting satellites, along with the
CGM's heating and cooling cycles.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figure
Development and Validation of a Prediction Model for Future Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate in People With Type 2 Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease
Importance: Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of progressive diabetic kidney disease, but reliable prediction tools that can be used in clinical practice and aid in patients' understanding of disease progression are currently lacking. Objective: To develop and externally validate a model to predict future trajectories in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease using data from 3 European multinational cohorts. Design, Setting, and Participants: This prognostic study used baseline and follow-up information collected between February 2010 and December 2019 from 3 prospective multinational cohort studies: PROVALID (Prospective Cohort Study in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus for Validation of Biomarkers), GCKD (German Chronic Kidney Disease), and DIACORE (Diabetes Cohorte). A total of 4637 adult participants (aged 18-75 years) with type 2 diabetes and mildly to moderately impaired kidney function (baseline eGFR of ≥30 mL/min/1.73 m2) were included. Data were analyzed between June 30, 2021, and January 31, 2023. Main Outcomes and Measures: Thirteen variables readily available from routine clinical care visits (age, sex, body mass index; smoking status; hemoglobin A1c[mmol/mol and percentage]; hemoglobin, and serum cholesterol levels; mean arterial pressure, urinary albumin-creatinine ratio, and intake of glucose-lowering, blood-pressure lowering, or lipid-lowering medication) were selected as predictors. Repeated eGFR measurements at baseline and follow-up visits were used as the outcome. A linear mixed-effects model for repeated eGFR measurements at study entry up to the last recorded follow-up visit (up to 5 years after baseline) was fit and externally validated. Results: Among 4637 adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease (mean [SD] age at baseline, 63.5 [9.1] years; 2680 men [57.8%]; all of White race), 3323 participants from the PROVALID and GCKD studies (mean [SD] age at baseline, 63.2 [9.3] years; 1864 men [56.1%]) were included in the model development cohort, and 1314 participants from the DIACORE study (mean [SD] age at baseline, 64.5 [8.3] years; 816 men [62.1%]) were included in the external validation cohort, with a mean (SD) follow-up of 5.0 (0.6) years. Updating the random coefficient estimates with baseline eGFR values yielded improved predictive performance, which was particularly evident in the visual inspection of the calibration curve (calibration slope at 5 years: 1.09; 95% CI, 1.04-1.15). The prediction model had good discrimination in the validation cohort, with the lowest C statistic at 5 years after baseline (0.79; 95% CI, 0.77-0.80). The model also had predictive accuracy, with an R2ranging from 0.70 (95% CI, 0.63-0.76) at year 1 to 0.58 (95% CI, 0.53-0.63) at year 5. Conclusions and Relevance: In this prognostic study, a reliable prediction model was developed and externally validated; the robust model was well calibrated and capable of predicting kidney function decline up to 5 years after baseline. The results and prediction model are publicly available in an accompanying web-based application, which may open the way for improved prediction of individual eGFR trajectories and disease progression.</p
Real time resistance monitoring during sintering of silver paste
The final publication is available at Elsevier via http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jallcom.2017.10.077 © 2018. This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Real time resistance monitoring technology is used to study the silver sintering process. Signals of joint resistance show events such as resistance increase to >10 GΩ, abrupt resistance drop from >10 GΩ to <1 kΩ, and gradual resistance drop to <1 mΩ. Based on cross-sectioning of samples at various stages of sintering and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), we propose a correlation between resistance signal and solvent evaporation, capping agent degradation, and silver sintering. We identified distinct clusters of sintered silver of samples removed from the oven when the resistance drops to ∼2.94 Ω.Natural Science and Engineering Research Council [493701]Microbonds Inc., Markham [072396
