Observing The Hidden Sector
We study the effects of renormalization due to hidden-sector dynamics on
observable soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters in the minimal supersymmetric
extension of the Standard Model (MSSM), under various hypotheses about their
universality at a high input scale. We show that hidden-sector renormalization
effects may induce the spurious appearance of unification of the scalar masses
at some lower scale, as in mirage unification scenarios. We demonstrate in
simple two-parameter models of the hidden-sector dynamics that the parameters
may in principle be extracted from experimental measurements, rendering the
hidden sector observable. We also discuss the ingredients that would be

Constraints on UED KK-neutrino dark matter from magnetic dipole moments
Generically, universal extra dimension (UED) extensions of the standard model
predict the stability of the lightest Kaluza-Klein (KK) particle and hence
provide a dark matter candidate. For UED scenarios with one extra dimension, we
model-independently determine the size of the induced dimension-five magnetic
dipole moment of the KK-neutrino, . We show that current
observational bounds on the interactions of dipole dark matter place

Electronic blending in virtual microscopy
Virtual microscopy (VM) is a relatively new technology that transforms the computer into a microscope. In essence, VM allows for the scanning and transfer of glass slides from light microscopy technology to the digital environment of the computer. This transition is also a function of the change from print knowledge to electronic knowledge, or as Gregory Ulmer puts it, a shift ‘from literacy to electracy.’ Blended learning, of course, is capable of including a wide variety of educational protocols in its definition; it is also at the heart of electronically mediated forms of education. Since 2004, VM has been introduced into Dentistry, Medicine, Biomedical Science and Veterinary Science courses at the University of Queensland, a project aimed at consolidating VM techniques and technologies into their curricula. This paper uses some of the evaluative survey data collected from this embedding process to discuss the role blended learning plays in electronic styles of learning, or ‘electracy’, before finally reflecting on the quantum world represented in VM imagery

Design Systematic review with best evidence synthesis. Data sources The Cochrane, PubMed, CINAHL Plus, PEDro and EMBASE electronic databases were searched (inception until 8 June 2017). Reference lists of included articles were also hand searched. Eligibility criteria Two reviewers independently evaluated eligibility. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were included if they compared subacromial injections of corticosteroid with anaesthetic injections. Two reviewers independently extracted data regarding short-term, midterm and long-term outcomes for pain, self-reported function, range of motion and patient-perceived improvement. Results Thirteen RCTs (n=1013) were included. Four trials (n=475) were judged as being at low risk of bias. Three studies of low risk of bias favoured the use of corticosteroid over anaesthetic-only injections in the short term (up to 8 weeks). There was strong evidence of no significant difference between injection types in midterm outcomes (12-26 weeks). There was limited evidence of no significant difference between injection types in long-term outcomes. Conclusion Corticosteroid injections may have a short-term benefit (up to 8 weeks) over local anaesthetic injections alone in the management of RCRSP. Beyond 8 weeks, there was no evidence to suggest a benefit of corticosteroid over local anaesthetic injections. Trial registration number PROSPERO CRD42016033161.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Aspects of Axion Phenomenology in a slice of AdS_5
Motivated by multi-throat considerations, we study the phenomenological
implications of a bulk axion in a slice of AdS_5 with a large extra dimension:
k~0.01 eV, kR > 1. In particular, we compare axion physics with a warped
geometry to axions in flat compactifications. As in flat compactification
scenarios, we find that the mass of the axion can become independent from the
underlying Peccei-Quinn scale. Surprisingly, we find that in warped extra
dimensions the axion's invisibility, cosmological viability, and basic
phenomenology remain essentially unaltered in comparison to axions in flat

Triviality and the (Supersymmetric) See-Saw
For the D=5 Majorana neutrino mass operator to have a see-saw ultraviolet
completion that is viable up to the Planck scale, the see-saw scale is bounded
above due to triviality limits on the see-saw couplings. For supersymmetric
see-saw models, with realistic neutrino mass textures, we compare constraints
on the see-saw scale from triviality bounds, with those arising from
experimental limits on induced charged-lepton flavour violation, for both the
