    Effect of Early Weaning of Beef Calves on Performance and Carcass Quality

    A study was conducted to evaluate early weaning of beef calves at 60-70 days of age on feedlot performance and carcass characteristics. One hundred twenty steer calves sired by either Simmental or Angus sires were weaned at an average age of 67 (early weaned, EW) or 147 (late weaned, LW) days. Calves were allotted to 16 feedlot pens by weaning treatment and sire breed at approximately 750-800 lb. EW calves were heavier (P \u3c .05) in initial feedlot weight. There were no differences due to weaning age on daily gain, dry matter intake, feed efficiency or slaughter weights. Simmental steers required more days on feed than Angus steers (P \u3c .05). Early-weaned calves had a higher percent intramuscular fat (5.7 vs. 5.1%), higher average marbling scores (Small78 vs. Small20, P \u3c .05), a higher percentage of cattle grading average USDA Choice and higher (38% vs. 14%, P \u3c .05) and a higher percentage of USDA Prime (10% vs. 0%, P \u3c .05). These data confirm observations in previous studies that early weaning and placing calves on a higher grain diet improves marbling at slaughter.     Pasture Weaning at the McNay Memorial Research and Demonstration Farm: A Progress Report

    In September 1995, 225 spring-born calves were weaned on pasture at the McNay Memorial Research and Demonstration Farm to explore procedures necessary to conduct a successful pasture-weaning program. In the two to three week post-weaning period, average daily gains (ADG) for the two groups weaned that year were 1.06 and 3.06 pounds; there were no health problems. In 1996, a research trial utilizing 242 spring-born calves was conducted to compare pastureweaned and feedlot-weaned calves. Half of the calves were weaned on pasture for three weeks and then placed in a feedlot for three more weeks. The other half of the calves were weaned directly into the feedlot for the six week post-weaning period. ADGs during the three week post-weaning period were 1.24 and 2.42 for the pastureweaned and feedlot-weaned calves. For the entire six week trial, ADGs were 1.83 and 2.40 for the pastureweaned and feedlot-weaned calves. There was no sickness in either weaning treatment during the six week trial. Initial experience indicates pasture-weaning is a feasible method of getting calves through a stressful procedure

    Evaluation of Condition Scoring of Feeder Calves as a Tool for Management and Nutrition

    Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of body condition scores of beef calves on performance efficiency and carcass characteristics. In Experiment 1, 111 steer calves were stratified by breed and condition score (CS) and randomly allotted to 14 pens. The study was analyzed as a 2 x 3 factorial design, with two breeds (Angus and Simmental) and three initial CS (4.4, 5.1, and 5.6). In Experiment 2, 76 steer calves were allotted to six pens by CS. The resultant pens averaged 3.9, 4.5, 4.7, 5.0, 5.1, and 5.6 in CS. Calves in both studies were fed a corn-based finishing diet formulated to 13.5% crude protein. All calves were implanted with Synovex- SÃ’ initially and reimplanted with Revalor-SÃ’. In Experiment 1, 29-day dry matter intake (lb/day) increased with CS (17.9, 18.1, and 19.1 for 4.4, 5.1, and 5.6, respectively; p \u3c .04). Daily gain (29 days) tended to decrease with increasing CS (4.19, 3.71, and 3.26; p \u3c .13). Days on feed decreased with increasing CS (185, 180, and 178d; p \u3c .07). In Experiment 2, daily gains also increased with decreasing initial CS for the first 114 days (p \u3c .05) and tended to increase overall (p \u3c .20). In Experiment 1, calves with lower initial CS had less external fat at slaughter (.48, .53, and .61 in. for CS 4.4, 5.1, and 5.6, respectively; p \u3c .05). This effect was also noted at slaughter (p \u3c .10), as well as at 57 days (p \u3c .06) and at 148 days (p \u3c .06) as measured by real-time ultrasound. Measurements of intramuscular fat and marbling were not different in either study. These data suggest that CS of feeder calves may be a useful tool for adjusting energy requirements of calves based on body condition. Also, feeder cattle may be sorted into outcome or management groups earlier than currently practiced using body condition and/or real-time ultrasound

    Compositional Program Generation for Systematic Generalization

    Compositional generalization is a key ability of humans that enables us to learn new concepts from only a handful examples. Machine learning models, including the now ubiquitous transformers, struggle to generalize in this way, and typically require thousands of examples of a concept during training in order to generalize meaningfully. This difference in ability between humans and artificial neural architectures, motivates this study on a neuro-symbolic architecture called the Compositional Program Generator (CPG). CPG has three key features: modularity, type abstraction, and recursive composition, that enable it to generalize both systematically to new concepts in a few-shot manner, as well as productively by length on various sequence-to-sequence language tasks. For each input, CPG uses a grammar of the input domain and a parser to generate a type hierarchy in which each grammar rule is assigned its own unique semantic module, a probabilistic copy or substitution program. Instances with the same hierarchy are processed with the same composed program, while those with different hierarchies may be processed with different programs. CPG learns parameters for the semantic modules and is able to learn the semantics for new types incrementally. Given a context-free grammar of the input language and a dictionary mapping each word in the source language to its interpretation in the output language, CPG can achieve perfect generalization on the SCAN and COGS benchmarks, in both standard and extreme few-shot settings.Comment: 7 pages of text with 1 page of reference

    Satellite Tracking of Manta Rays Highlights Challenges to Their Conservation

    We describe the real-time movements of the last of the marine mega-vertebrate taxa to be satellite tracked – the giant manta ray (or devil fish, Manta birostris), the world's largest ray at over 6 m disc width. Almost nothing is known about manta ray movements and their environmental preferences, making them one of the least understood of the marine mega-vertebrates. Red listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as ‘Vulnerable’ to extinction, manta rays are known to be subject to direct and incidental capture and some populations are declining. Satellite-tracked manta rays associated with seasonal upwelling events and thermal fronts off the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico, and made short-range shuttling movements, foraging along and between them. The majority of locations were received from waters shallower than 50 m deep, representing thermally dynamic and productive waters. Manta rays remained in the Mexican Exclusive Economic Zone for the duration of tracking but only 12% of tracking locations were received from within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Our results on the spatio-temporal distribution of these enigmatic rays highlight opportunities and challenges to management efforts
