Giant nonlinear response of superconducting single crystal niobium in a sweeping magnetic field
Giant enhancement of the nonlinear response of a single crystal of Nb placed
in a sweeping magnetic field has been experimentally observed. The rectified
signal from Nb ( K) has been measured by means of an inductive method
as a function of temperature, dc field, dc field sweep rate, and the amplitude
of ac field. The Nb sample was excited by an amplitude modulated ac field.
Under a stationary regime, the rectified signal appears only for magnetic
fields () in the range . However, when the dc field
was swept slowly, the rectified signal appears at . This experiment
shows that the amplitude of the rectified signal is two orders of magnitude
larger than the amplitude of the signal seen under stationary field conditions.
Moreover, the amplitude of the rectified signal is a power function of the

The Variational Homoencoder: Learning to learn high capacity generative models from few examples
Hierarchical Bayesian methods can unify many related tasks (e.g. k-shot
classification, conditional and unconditional generation) as inference within a
single generative model. However, when this generative model is expressed as a
powerful neural network such as a PixelCNN, we show that existing learning
techniques typically fail to effectively use latent variables. To address this,
we develop a modification of the Variational Autoencoder in which encoded
observations are decoded to new elements from the same class. This technique,
which we call a Variational Homoencoder (VHE), produces a hierarchical latent
variable model which better utilises latent variables. We use the VHE framework
to learn a hierarchical PixelCNN on the Omniglot dataset, which outperforms all
existing models on test set likelihood and achieves strong performance on
one-shot generation and classification tasks. We additionally validate the VHE
on natural images from the YouTube Faces database. Finally, we develop
extensions of the model that apply to richer dataset structures such as

Theory of hopping conduction in arrays of doped semiconductor nanocrystals
The resistivity of a dense crystalline array of semiconductor nanocrystals
(NCs) depends in a sensitive way on the level of doping as well as on the NC
size and spacing. The choice of these parameters determines whether electron
conduction through the array will be characterized by activated
nearest-neighbor hopping or variable-range hopping (VRH). Thus far, no general
theory exists to explain how these different behaviors arise at different
doping levels and for different types of NCs. In this paper we examine a simple
theoretical model of an array of doped semiconductor NCs that can explain the
transition from activated transport to VRH. We show that in sufficiently small
NCs, the fluctuations in donor number from one NC to another provide sufficient
disorder to produce charging of some NCs, as electrons are driven to vacate
higher shells of the quantum confinement energy spectrum. This
confinement-driven charging produces a disordered Coulomb landscape throughout
the array and leads to VRH at low temperature. We use a simple computer
simulation to identify different regimes of conduction in the space of
temperature, doping level, and NC diameter. We also discuss the implications of
our results for large NCs with external impurity charges and for NCs that are

Images of leadership: a new exercise to teach leadership from a social constructionist perspective
Adopting a social constructionist approach to the teaching of leadership, we asked students in a required course in management to find or create and submit a digital image that captures leadership as they see it. Our intention was to help students understand their own perceptions of leadership and to see how their perceptions compare to those of others. We have run this exercise for the last 10 years (2000–2009), and to date we have collected 5037 digital images. These images are used throughout the course to demonstrate the relevance of the subject, to enrich the discussion of leadership theories, to help embed the teaching, and to illuminate classroom exercises and team project work. This social constructionist approach aligns the course’s philosophical stance on leadership with its pedagogy. In addition, this approach has allowed us to capture students’ collective lay theory of leadership which offers a valuable counterpoint to extant theories of leadership.
