    Electromagnetic Structure of Light Baryons in Lattice QCD

    A method in which electromagnetic properties of hadrons are studied by direct simulation of dynamical photon effects is applied to the extraction of the isomultiplet structure of the octet baryons. Using 187 configurations at β=5.7\beta=5.7 with Wilson action, and up and down quark masses determined from the meson spectrum, the nucleon splitting is found to be 1.55(±0.56  stat)1.55(\pm 0.56\; \rm stat) MeV; the hyperon splittings are found to be Σ0−Σ+=2.47±0.39\Sigma^{0}-\Sigma^{+}=2.47\pm 0.39, Σ−−Σ0=4.63±0.36\Sigma^{-}-\Sigma^{0}=4.63\pm 0.36, Ξ−−Ξ0=5.68±0.24\Xi^{-}-\Xi^{0}=5.68\pm 0.24 MeV. Estimated systematic corrections arising from finite volume and the quenched approximation are included in these results.Comment: Talk presented at LATTICE96(phenomenology

    The Kaon B-parameter from Quenched Domain-Wall QCD

    We present numerical results for the kaon B-parameter, B_K, determined in the quenched approximation of lattice QCD. Our simulations are performed using domain-wall fermions and the renormalization group improved, DBW2 gauge action which combine to give quarks with good chiral symmetry at finite lattice spacing. Operators are renormalized non-perturbatively using the RI/MOM scheme. We study scaling by performing the simulation on two different lattices with a^{-1} = 1.982(30) and 2.914(54) GeV. We combine this quenched scaling study with an earlier calculation of B_K using two flavors of dynamical, domain-wall quarks at a single lattice spacing to obtain B_K(MS,NDR,mu=2GeV)=0.563(21)(39)(30), were the first error is statistical, the second systematic (without quenching errors) and the third estimates the error due to quenching.Comment: 77 pages, 44 figures, to be published in Phys.     Scaling of Pseudo-Critical Couplings in Two-Flavour QCD

    We study the scaling behaviour of the pseudo-critical couplings for the chiral phase transition in two-flavour QCD. We show that all existing results from lattice simulations on lattices with temporal extent Nτ=4N_\tau = 4, 6 and 8 can be mapped onto a universal scaling curve. The relevant combination of critical exponents, βδ\beta\delta, is consistent with the scaling behaviour expected for a second order phase transition with O(4)O(4) exponents. At present, scaling according to the O(2)O(2) symmetry group can, however, not be ruled out.Comment: 8 pages, NSF-ITP 93-12

    Phenotypic Variation in Skull Size and Shape Between Newfoundland and Mainland Populations of North American Black Bears, Ursus americanus

    It is well recognized that differences in environmental selection pressures among populations can generate phenotypic divergence in a suite of morphological characteristics and associated life history traits. Previous analysis of mitochondrial DNA and body size have suggested that Black Bears (Ursus americanus) inhabiting the island of Newfoundland represent a different subspecies or ecotype from mainland populations. Assuming that body size covaries positively with skull size, we predicted that skull size would be greater for bears on the island than the mainland, and the distribution of size-related shape components in multivariate space should show a distinct separation between Newfoundland and mainland populations. Measurements of 1080 specimens from Newfoundland, Alberta, New York, and Quebec did not provide unequivocal support for our prediction that skull size in Newfoundland bears would be larger than bears from the mainland populations. After removing ontogenetic effects of skull size, between-population variation in skull shape was greater in females than males, and the analysis significantly separated Newfoundland bears from mainland populations. Explanations for this pattern are numerous, but currently remain hypothetical. Limited covariation between skull size and body size suggests that genetic traits regulating the size of Black Bear skulls are more heritable (i.e., less influenced by environmental selection pressures) than characteristics affecting body size. We hypothesize that if gape size does not limit prey size in solitary terrestrial carnivores, large degrees of among-population variation in body size should be coupled with little covariation in skull size. In general, sexual dimorphism in skull size and shape was marginal for the phenotypic characters measured in our study. We believe that sexual dimorphism in skull size in Black Bears is primarily driven by intrasexual selection in males for increased gape size display, while similarity in skull shape between sexes is associated with the constraints of a temporally-selective, but similar diet

    The kaon semileptonic form factor in Nf=2+1 domain wall lattice QCD with physical light quark masses

    We present the first calculation of the kaon semileptonic form factor with sea and valence quark masses tuned to their physical values in the continuum limit of 2+1 flavour domain wall lattice QCD. We analyse a comprehensive set of simulations at the phenomenologically convenient point of zero momentum transfer in large physical volumes and for two different values of the lattice spacing. Our prediction for the form factor is f+(0)=0.9685(34)(14) where the first error is statistical and the second error systematic. This result can be combined with experimental measurements of K->pi decays for a determination of the CKM-matrix element for which we predict |Vus|=0.2233(5)(9) where the first error is from experiment and the second error from the lattice computation.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, 6 table

    Z Boson Propagator Correction in Technicolor Theories with ETC Effects Included

    We calculate the Z boson propagator correction, as described by the S parameter, in technicolor theories with extended technicolor interactions included. Our method is to solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the requisite current-current correlation functions. Our results suggest that the inclusion of extended technicolor interactions has a relatively small effect on S.Comment: 15pages, 8 figure
