The Kaon B-parameter from Quenched Domain-Wall QCD
We present numerical results for the kaon B-parameter, B_K, determined in the
quenched approximation of lattice QCD. Our simulations are performed using
domain-wall fermions and the renormalization group improved, DBW2 gauge action
which combine to give quarks with good chiral symmetry at finite lattice
spacing. Operators are renormalized non-perturbatively using the RI/MOM scheme.
We study scaling by performing the simulation on two different lattices with
a^{-1} = 1.982(30) and 2.914(54) GeV. We combine this quenched scaling study
with an earlier calculation of B_K using two flavors of dynamical, domain-wall
quarks at a single lattice spacing to obtain
B_K(MS,NDR,mu=2GeV)=0.563(21)(39)(30), were the first error is statistical, the
second systematic (without quenching errors) and the third estimates the error

Enhanced chiral logarithms in partially quenched QCD
I discuss the properties of pions in ``partially quenched'' theories, i.e.
those in which the valence and sea quark masses, and , are
different. I point out that for lattice fermions which retain some chiral
symmetry on the lattice, e.g. staggered fermions, the leading order prediction
of the chiral expansion is that the mass of the pion depends only on , and
is independent of . This surprising result is shown to receive corrections
from loop effects which are of relative size , and which thus
diverge when the valence quark mass vanishes. Using partially quenched chiral
perturbation theory, I calculate the full one-loop correction to the mass and
decay constant of pions composed of two non-degenerate quarks, and suggest
various combinations for which the prediction is independent of the unknown
coefficients of the analytic terms in the chiral Lagrangian. These results can
also be tested with Wilson fermions if one uses a non-perturbative definition

Scaling of Pseudo-Critical Couplings in Two-Flavour QCD
We study the scaling behaviour of the pseudo-critical couplings for the
chiral phase transition in two-flavour QCD. We show that all existing results
from lattice simulations on lattices with temporal extent , 6 and 8
can be mapped onto a universal scaling curve. The relevant combination of
critical exponents, , is consistent with the scaling behaviour
expected for a second order phase transition with exponents. At present,
scaling according to the symmetry group can, however, not be ruled out.Comment: 8 pages, NSF-ITP 93-12
The Spatial String Tension and Dimensional Reduction in QCD
We calculate the spatial string tension in (2+1) flavor QCD with physical
strange quark mass and almost physical light quark masses using lattices with
temporal extent N_tau=4,6 and 8. We compare our results on the spatial string
tension with predictions of dimensionally reduced QCD. This suggests that also
in the presence of light dynamical quarks dimensional reduction works well down
to temperatures 1.5T_c.Comment: 8 pages ReVTeX, 4 figure
Pharmacokinetic Interactions between the Hormonal Emergency Contraception, Levonorgestrel (Plan B), and Efavirenz
Objectives. Compare the Plan B levonorgestrel (LNG) area under the concentration- time curve (AUC12) prior to and with efavirenz (EFV). Design. Prospective, open-label, single-arm, equivalence study. Methods. Healthy HIV-negative subjects underwent 12 hr intensive pharmacokinetic (PK) sampling following single dose LNG alone and after 14 days of EFV. Geometric means, Geometric Mean Ratios, and 90% confidence intervals (CI) are reported for PK Parameters. T-tests were utilized. Clinical parameters and liver function tests (LFTs) were assessed. Results. 24 women enrolled and 21 completed the study. With EFV, LNG AUC12 was reduced 56% (95% CI: 49%, 62%) from 42.9 to 17.8 ng∗hr/mL, and maximum concentration (Cmax) was reduced 41% (95% CI: 33%, 50%) from 8.4 to 4.6 ng/mL. LNG was well tolerated with no grade 3 or 4 treatment-related toxicities. Conclusions. EFV significantly reduced LNG exposures. Higher LNG doses may be required with EFV. These results reinforce the importance of effective contraception in women taking EFV
The kaon semileptonic form factor in Nf=2+1 domain wall lattice QCD with physical light quark masses
We present the first calculation of the kaon semileptonic form factor with
sea and valence quark masses tuned to their physical values in the continuum
limit of 2+1 flavour domain wall lattice QCD. We analyse a comprehensive set of
simulations at the phenomenologically convenient point of zero momentum
transfer in large physical volumes and for two different values of the lattice
spacing. Our prediction for the form factor is f+(0)=0.9685(34)(14) where the
first error is statistical and the second error systematic. This result can be
combined with experimental measurements of K->pi decays for a determination of
the CKM-matrix element for which we predict |Vus|=0.2233(5)(9) where the first
error is from experiment and the second error from the lattice computation.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, 6 table
