Field and current distributions and ac losses in a bifilar stack of superconducting strips
In this paper I first analytically calculate the magnetic-field and
sheet-current distributions generated in an infinite stack of thin
superconducting strips of thickness d, width 2a >> d, and arbitrary separation
D when adjacent strips carry net current of magnitude I in opposite directions.
Each strip is assumed to have uniform critical current density Jc, critical
sheet-current density Kc = Jc d, and critical current Ic = 2a Kc, and the
distribution of the current density within each strip is assumed to obey
critical-state theory. I then derive expressions for the ac losses due to
magnetic-flux penetration both from the strip edges and from the top and bottom
of each strip, and I express the results in terms of integrals involving the
perpendicular and parallel components of the magnetic field. After numerically
evaluating the ac losses for typical dimensions, I present analytic expressions
from which the losses can be estimated.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
ac Losses in a Finite Z Stack Using an Anisotropic Homogeneous-Medium Approximation
A finite stack of thin superconducting tapes, all carrying a fixed current I,
can be approximated by an anisotropic superconducting bar with critical current
density Jc=Ic/2aD, where Ic is the critical current of each tape, 2a is the
tape width, and D is the tape-to-tape periodicity. The current density J must
obey the constraint \int J dx = I/D, where the tapes lie parallel to the x axis
and are stacked along the z axis. We suppose that Jc is independent of field
(Bean approximation) and look for a solution to the critical state for
arbitrary height 2b of the stack. For c<|x|<a we have J=Jc, and for |x|<c the
critical state requires that Bz=0. We show that this implies \partial
J/\partial x=0 in the central region. Setting c as a constant (independent of
z) results in field profiles remarkably close to the desired one (Bz=0 for
|x|<c) as long as the aspect ratio b/a is not too small. We evaluate various
criteria for choosing c, and we show that the calculated hysteretic losses
depend only weakly on how c is chosen. We argue that for small D/a the
anisotropic homogeneous-medium approximation gives a reasonably accurate
estimate of the ac losses in a finite Z stack. The results for a Z stack can be
used to calculate the transport losses in a pancake coil wound with
superconducting tape.Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, accepted by Supercond. Sci. Techno
Oscillatory behavior of the bed bulk and the bubbles in a vertically vibrated pseudo-2D bed in bubbling regime
The effect of the bed vessel vibration on the oscillatory behavior of the bed bulk and the bubbles is experimentally studied in the present work by means of Digital Image Analysis (DIA) in a pseudo-2D bed. The bed material was three different powders of Geldart A, B and AFB classifications and was operated in bubbling regime for different superficial gas velocities and vibration amplitudes and frequencies. A tracking methodology was developed in order to follow the oscillatory motion of the bed bulk and each individual bubble in the system. This allowed the analysis of the interaction of the dense phase of the bed with the oscillations of the Nibble diameter, position and velocity. The results indicate that both the center of mass of the bed and the bubble characteristics follow the oscillation of the bed vessel with a similar frequency but with a phase delay. The amplitude and phase delay of the oscillation of the center of mass of the bed are more sensitive to variations of the vibration frequency than to variations of the vibration amplitude of the bed vessel. Both the amplitude and the frequency of the bed vessel vibration have a stronger impact on the bubble behavior of beds filled with small particles. The existence of a phase delay between the oscillations of bubble characteristics in the lower and upper sections of the bed indicates the existence of compression-expansion waves in the dense phase that modify the bubble behavior along the bed despite bubbles are interacting with each other. The presence of compression-expansion waves may shed light onto the different behaviors encountered for the mean bubble behavior in vibrated fluidized beds. This work has been partially funded by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Ayudas a la Movilidad 2014
Simulating spin-3/2 particles at colliders
Support for interactions of spin-3/2 particles is implemented in the
FeynRules and ALOHA packages and tested with the MadGraph 5 and CalcHEP event
generators in the context of three phenomenological applications. In the first,
we implement a spin-3/2 Majorana gravitino field, as in local supersymmetric
models, and study gravitino and gluino pair-production. In the second, a
spin-3/2 Dirac top-quark excitation, inspired from compositness models, is
implemented. We then investigate both top-quark excitation and top-quark
pair-production. In the third, a general effective operator for a spin-3/2
Dirac quark excitation is implemented, followed by a calculation of the angular
distribution of the s-channel production mechanism.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
Analytical investigation of magnetic field distributions around superconducting strips on ferromagnetic substrates
The complex-field approach is developed to derive analytical expressions of
the magnetic field distributions around superconducting strips on ferromagnetic
substrates (SC/FM strips). We consider the ferromagnetic substrates as ideal
soft magnets with an infinite magnetic permeability, neglecting the
ferromagnetic hysteresis. On the basis of the critical state model for a
superconducting strip, the ac susceptibility of a SC/FM
strip exposed to a perpendicular ac magnetic field is theoretically
investigated, and the results are compared with those for superconducting
strips on nonmagnetic substrates (SC/NM strips). The real part for
(where is the amplitude of the ac magnetic field,
is the critical current density, and is the thickness of the
superconducting strip) of a SC/FM strip is 3/4 of that of a SC/NM strip. The
imaginary part (or ac loss ) for of a SC/FM
strip is larger than that of a SC/NM strip, even when the ferromagnetic
hysteresis is neglected, and this enhancement of (or ) is due to
the edge effect of the ferromagnetic substrate.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Magnetic-field dependence of the critical currents in a periodic coplanar array of narrow superconducting strip
We calculate the magnetic-field dependence of the critical current due to
both geometrical edge barriers and bulk pinning in a periodic coplanar array of
narrow superconducting strips. We find that in zero or low applied magnetic
fields the critical current can be considerably enhanced by the edge barriers,
but in modest applied magnetic fields the critical current reduces to that due
to bulk pinning alone.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figure
Matching fields of a long superconducting film
We obtain the vortex configurations, the matching fields and the
magnetization of a superconducting film with a finite cross section. The
applied magnetic field is normal to this cross section, and we use London
theory to calculate many of its properties, such as the local magnetic field,
the free energy and the induction for the mixed state. Thus previous similar
theoretical works, done for an infinitely long superconducting film, are
recovered here, in the special limit of a very long cross section.Comment: Contains a REVTeX file and 4 figure
