Ko sta srp in kladivo izgubila moč : razkroj sovjetskega satelitskega sistema in demokratizacija srednje in vzhodne Evrope

The contemporary discussion of democratic movements during the late 1980s and early 1990s stresses the need to place these phenomena in a broader context, comprising the prehistory, dating at least to the beginning of WWII, the dynamics of the processes itself, and their aftermath until 2020. Regarding the historical foundations, a few characterictics have to be singled out. For instance, the inability or unwillingness of the Soviets to see the historical differences in their domain greatly contributed to the rather early and unexpected demise of their empire. Greater emphasis should be given to the particularities of the Soviet republics themselves. It is somewhat clear that the uneasy task to balance national emancipation and democratization was undertaken almost everywhere in the late 1980s. It is also easy to see that the former process gained the upper hand in most areas

Year 1968 in the Church of Slovenia and Vekoslav Grmič

Toda nepripravljenost slednjih na kakorkoli enakopravno obravnavo Cerkve in zaostritev izhodiščnih postavk »vzhodnoštajerskega toka« katoliške misli v Grmičevem krogu sta sčasoma povečali razkorak med tem krogom in večino slovenskih katoličanov ter pripeljali do zatona »Grmičevega desetletja« po letu 1978.The year 1968 was not only a pivotal year in contemporary European history, but also important for the Maribor diocese. A partial reestablishment of higher education studies in theology in Maribor coincided with Vekoslav Grmič\u27s elevation to the post of auxiliary bishop. The »spring« of theological thought in Maribor and Slovenia was enabled by the interweaving of various internal and external circumstances, which simultaneously outlined its boundaries. Among them, one should mention the general enthusiasm caused by the Second Vatican Council and the »Ostpolitik« of Pope Paul VI. Vekoslav Grmič was especially suitable as a frontrunner of such aspirations, since he was not only a champion of contemporary theological views then, but as a representative of the »Eastern Styrian current« inside the Slovene Catholic community he also shared some basic ideas of the Communist authorities in Slovenia. However, the fundamental unwillingness of these authorities to treat Church as an equal partner in any way and the radicalization of some already problematic concepts of the »Eastern Styrian current« of the Catholic thought in the Grmic circle eventually widened the gap between this circle and a s

Through Different Paths to Symphony: The Historical Framework of the Relationship between Eastern Orthodoxy and Political Authorities in Ukraine and Russia

The author argues that at least since the 14th century, one can speak of great differences in the development of the relationship between Eastern Orthodoxy and political authorities. Whereas Eastern Orthodoxy in the present-day Russia always tried to distance itself from the western influences, its counterpart in Lithuania and Poland mainly embraced such influences. This became particularly visible during the late 16th and the first half of the 17 th century. Western patterns and Ukrainian hierarchs also strongly shaped the politics of Peter the Great towards the Eastern Orthodox church. Its lack of any meaningful autonomy in relationship with state authorities since 1721 remained characteristic for centuries to come. Therefore, the Ukrainian-Russia church conflict since 1990 has a much longer prehistory. Of course, the autocephalous Ukrainian church was also forced to rely heavily on the help of the state authorities

The NONO gene encodes a nuclear protein involved in transcriptional regulation, RNA synthesis and DNA repair. Hemizygous loss-of function, de novo or maternally inherited variants in NONO have been associated with an X-linked syndromic intellectual developmental disorder-34 (OMIM # 300967), characterized by developmental delay, intellectual disability, hypotonia, macrocephaly, elongated face, structural abnormalities of corpus callosum and/or cerebellum, congenital heart defect and left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy. Few patients have been described in the literature and the phenotype data are limited. We report a 17-year-old boy with dolihocephaly, elongated face, strabismus, speech and motor delay, intellectual disability, congenital heart defect (ASD, VSD and Ebstein’s anomaly), left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy, bilateral inguinal hernia and cryptorchidism. Additional features included recurrent fractures due to multiple non-ossifying fibromas, thrombocytopenia, and renal anomalies. Exome sequencing revealed a de novo pathogenic variant (NM_001145408.2: c.348+2_ 348+15del) in intron 5 of the NONO gene. Renal anomalies and thrombocytopenia have been rarely reported in patients with NONO—X-linked intellectual disability syndrome, while recurrent fractures due to multiple non-ossifying fibromas have not previously been associated with this syndrome. The phenotypic spectrum of NONO—X-linked intellectual disability syndrome may be broader than currently known

Genomic Testing for Prenatal Clinical Evaluation of Congenital Anomalies

Congenital anomalies occur in about 2–3% of liveborn and 20% of stillborn infants. They constitute a serious public health and epidemiological problem. The etiology of congenital anomalies is complex; they can result from genetic factors, environmental factors, or a combination of both. It is estimated that genetic factors represent an important cause of congenital anomalies and may be due to different genetic mechanisms: aneuploidies, deletions and duplications of DNA segments, and single gene disorders. Due to the genetic complexity, the targeted prenatal genetic diagnostics of congenital anomalies is usually problematic and challenging. In recent years new diagnostic algorithms for prenatal genetic testing are being developed with the advent of new genomic technologies, like molecular karyotyping and next-generation sequencing. These technologies offer testing options that exceed conventional karyotyping and targeted molecular genetic testing with better diagnostic yield. In this chapter, an overview of the conventional genetic diagnostic approach and the use of new genomic technologies in the diagnostic algorithm of prenatally detected congenital anomalies are discussed

CLINICAL EXOME SEQUENCING IN DEMENTIAS: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

    Get PDF
Background: Dementias are clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders. Often, dementias with genetic etiology are clinically indistinguishable from non-genetic ones. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the yield of clinical exome sequencing in dementias, potentially associated with monogenic genetic predisposition. Subjects and methods: For this purpose 20 consecutive patients younger than 65 years were studied in the period from January 2014 to December 2017; 14 with the diagnosis of Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), 3 with early-onset Alzheimer disease (EOAD) and 3 with unspecified dementia. In addition to clinical exome sequencing including 57 genes associated with dementia, C9orf72 hexanucleotide expansion as tested in all patients. Results: We found genetic etiology in 6 patients: 2 mutations in the PSEN1 gene (p.Pro264Ser and p.Phe105Cys) in the EOAD patients, C9orf72 expansion and MAPT (c.1920+16C>T), mutation in the FTD group of patients as well as MAPT (c.1920+16C>T) mutation and likely pathogenic mutation in the TYROBP mutation (p.Asp32Asn) in patients with unspecified diagnosis. Conclusions: Our preliminary results imply significant diagnostic yield in identifying rare genetic causes of dementia, combining comprehensive clinical exome sequencing and targeted C9orf72 expansion testing
