    Market surveys and social media provide confirmation of the endangered giant freshwater whipray Urogymnus polylepis in Myanmar

    The giant freshwater whipray Urogymnus polylepis is a threatened species that is vulnerable to riverine and coastal marine pressures. Despite its threatened status, the range of U. polylepis is still being determined. In this study, photographic evidence of U. polylepis in Myanmar was provided through market surveys (2017-2018) and social media (Sharks and Rays of Rakhine Facebook page, 2021). Urogymnus polylepis is exposed to fisheries and habitat degradation pressures in Myanmar; therefore, conservation management is likely needed to ensure populations persist into the future

    A simple relativistic quantum field model with the Yukawa-type interaction is considered to demonstrate that the analytic confinement of the constituent ("quarks") and carrier ("gluons") particles explains qualitatively the basic dynamical properties of the spectrum of mesons considered as two-particle stable bound states of quarks and gluons: the quarks and gluons are confined, the glueballs represent bound states of massless gluons, the masses of mesons are larger than the sum of the constituent quark masses and the Regge trajectories of mesonic orbital excitations are almost linear.Comment: RevTeX, 16 pages, 3 figures and 2 table

    The Political Economy of Myanmar's Transition

After two decades of military rule, the pace of change has startled almost everyone and led to a great deal of cautious optimism. To make sense of the transition and assess the case for optimism, this article explores the political economy of Myanmar's dual transition from state socialism to capitalism and from dictatorship to democracy. It analyses changes within Myanmar society from a critical political economy perspective in order to both situate these developments within broader regional trends and to evaluate the country's current trajectory. In particular, the emergence of state-mediated capitalism and politico-business complexes in Myanmar's borderlands are emphasised. These dynamics, which have empowered a narrow oligarchy, are less likely to be undone by the reform process than to fundamentally shape the contours of reform. Consequently, Myanmar's future may not be unlike those of other Southeast Asian states that have experienced similar developmental trajectories

    The Nystrom plus Correction Method for Solving Bound State Equations in Momentum Space

    A new method is presented for solving the momentum-space Schrodinger equation with a linear potential. The Lande-subtracted momentum space integral equation can be transformed into a matrix equation by the Nystrom method. The method produces only approximate eigenvalues in the cases of singular potentials such as the linear potential. The eigenvalues generated by the Nystrom method can be improved by calculating the numerical errors and adding the appropriate corrections. The end results are more accurate eigenvalues than those generated by the basis function method.     Bound q\bar q Systems in the Framework of the Different Versions of the 3-Dimensional Reductions of the Bethe-Salpeter Equation

    Bound q\bar q systems are studied in the framework of different 3-dimensional relativistic equations derived from the Bethe-Salpeter equation with the instantaneous kernel in the momentum space. Except the Salpeter equation, all these equations have a correct one-body limit when one of the constituent quark masses tends to infinity. The spin structure of the confining qq interaction potential is taken in the form xγ10γ20+(1x)I1I2x\gamma_{1}^{0}\gamma_{2}^{0}+(1-x)I_{1}I_{2}, with 0x10\leq x \leq 1. At first stage, the one-gluon-exchange potential is neglected and the confining potential is taken in the oscillator form. For the systems (u\bar s), (c\bar u), (c\bar s) and (u\bar u), (s\bar s) a comparative qualitative analysis of these equations is carried out for different values of the mixing parameter x and the confining potential strength parameter. We investigate: 1)the existence/nonexistence of stable solutions of these equations; 2) the parameter dependence of the general structure of the meson mass spectum and leptonic decay constants of pseudoscalar and vector mesons. It is demonstrated that none of the 3-dimensional equations considered in the present paper does simultaneously describe even general qualitative features of the whole mass spectrum of q\bar q systems.     The increased sensitivity of qPCR in comparison to Kato-Katz is required for the accurate assessment of the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth infection in settings that have received multiple rounds of mass drug administration

    Background The most commonly used diagnostic tool for soil-transmitted helminths (STH) is the Kato-Katz (KK) thick smear technique. However, numerous studies have suggested that the sensitivity of KK can be problematic, especially in low prevalence and low intensity settings. An emerging alternative is quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Methods In this study, both KK and qPCR were conducted on stool samples from 648 participants in an STH epidemiology study conducted in the delta region of Myanmar in June 2016. Results Prevalence of any STH was 20.68% by KK and 45.06% by qPCR. Prevalence of each individual STH was also higher by qPCR than KK, the biggest difference was for hookworm with an approximately 4-fold increase between the two diagnostic techniques. Prevalence of Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a parasite predominately found in dogs, was 4.63%, indicating that there is the possibility of zoonotic transmission in the study setting. In individuals with moderate to high intensity infections there is evidence for a linear relationship between eggs per gram (EPG) of faeces, derived from KK, and DNA copy number, derived from qPCR which is particularly strong for Ascaris lumbricoides. Conclusions The use of qPCR in low prevalence settings is important to accurately assess the epidemiological situation and plan control strategies for the ‘end game’.     Multiple-University Extension Program Addresses Postdisaster Oil Spill Needs Through Private Funding Partnership

    In response to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) was formed to answer oil spill–related scientific questions. However, peer-reviewed scientific discoveries were not reaching people whose livelihoods depended on a healthy Gulf of Mexico. GoMRI and the four Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant programs partnered to develop a regional Extension program with a team of multidisciplinary specialists and a regional manager embedded within the Sea Grant programs. The team answered oil spill science questions from target audiences. The program leaders also identified the value of adding a regional Extension communicator to enhance their Extension products

    Quark-diquark Systematics of Baryons: Spectral Integral Equations for Systems Composed by Light Quarks

    For baryons composed by the light quarks (q=u,dq=u,d) we write spectral integral equation using the notion of two diquarks: (i) axial--vector state, D11D^{1}_{1}, with the spin SD=1S_D=1 and isospin ID=1I_D=1 and (ii) scalar one, D00D^{0}_{0}, with the spin SD=0S_D=0 and isospin ID=0I_D=0. We present spectral integral equations for the qD00qD^{0}_{0} and qD11qD^{1}_{1} states taking into account quark--diquark confinement interaction.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure

    Charmed quark component of the photon wave function

    We determine the c-anti-c component of the photon wave function on the basis of (i) the data on the transitions e+ e- -> J/psi(3096), psi(3686), psi(4040), psi(4415), (ii) partial widths of the two-photon decays eta_{c0}(2979), chi_{c0}(3415), chi_{c2}(3556) -> gamma-gamma, and (iii) wave functions of the charmonium states obtained by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the c-anti-c system. Using the obtained c-anti-c component of the photon wave function we calculate the gamma-gamma decay partial widths for radial excitation 2S state, eta_{c0}(3594) -> gamma-gamma, and 2P states chi_{c0}(3849), chi_{c2}(3950) -> gamma-gamma.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figure
