A research project on interpersonal characteristics and neurotic symptoms: science or magic?

Deze lezing presenteert een aantal bevindingen van mijn doctoraatsonderzoek naar het verband tussen interpersoonlijke karakteristieken en neurotische symptomen. De bevindingen zijn op het eerste gezicht spectaculair maar grondiger analyse toont dat ze voor een substantieel deel tot artefacten herleid kunnen worden. De meest voorkomende artefacten zijn te wijten aan content overlap tussen de operationalisaties van variabelen waartussen associaties onderzocht worden en artificiële inflatie van associaties door het opstapelen van foutvariantie als twee variabelen met dezelfde methode opgemeten worden. We beargumenteren dat het niet onderkennen van artefacten in kwantitatief onderzoek wetenschap tot magie herleidt

Lacan’s discourse theory in the age of evidence-based practice

Deze lezing vergelijkt de hedendaagse empirisch-kwantitatieve benadering omtrent effectiviteit van psychotherapieën met een bestudering van de effecten van psychotherapie aan de hand van de Lacaniaanse discourstheorie. Eerst preciseren we een aantal vooronderstellingen van hedendaagse effectenstudies, daarna gaan we dieper in op een aantal limiteringen van kwantificatie in de klinische psychologie, vervolgens gaan we dieper in op Lacans discourstheorie als een theorie die effecten van psychotherapie formaliseert, vertrekkende vanuit de interne dynamiek van verschillende vormen waarop mensen een talige dialoog met een ander kunnen aangaan

Fantasme en angst: een gevalsstudie

Abstract : In deze lezing benaderen we het klinisch materiaal omtrent een patiënte vanuit Lacans notie van het fantasme. We definiëren het fantasme daarbij als een interpersoonlijke structuur met drie posities die seksueel genot genereert in een subject. We illustreren aan de hand van het klinisch materiaal dat de neurotische symptomen in hun aanwezigheid en intensiteit correleren met de mate waarin de fantasmatische structuur gerealiseerd wordt door het subject

Psychoanalyse en empirisch onderzoek

Dit artikel is een schriftelijke uitwerking van een lezing op de studiedag ‘Psychoanalyse, oude dromen, nieuwe wegen’, die in oktober 2015 georganiseerd werd door het Tijdschrift voor Psychoanalyse. Het thema van de studiedag betrof onder meer de verhouding van de psychoanalyse tot de maatschappelijke vraag om haar praktijk empirisch te onderbouwen. In dit artikel bespreek ik vanuit welke perspectieven men wel en niet kan ingaan op deze vraag. Vanuit het negatieve perspectief bespreek ik het risico om in sciëntisme en pseudowetenschap te vervallen; vanuit het positieve perspectief wijs ik erop dat psychoanalyse en wetenschap beiden gegrond zijn in een vermogen om vanuit een toestand van niet-weten geboorte te geven aan een nieuw weten. Tijdens mijn betoog verwijs ik illustratief naar het onderzoeksprogramma van de Vakgroep Psychoanalyse van de Universiteit van Gent

The presence of the analyst in Lacanian treatment

Transference implies the actualization of the analyst in the analytic encounter. Lacan developed this idea through the syntagm presence of the analyst. In the course of his seminars, however, two completely different presences emerge, with major implications for how the treatment is directed. In the light of Lacan's idea that the transference is constituted in Real, Symbolic, and Imaginary dimensions, it can be seen how in his early work the analyst's presence is a phenomenon at the crossroads between signifiers and images. From the 1960s onward, however, the analyst's presence comes to necessarily involve the Real. This means it points to the moment at which symbolization reaches its limits. The clinical implications of this later interpretation of the presence of the analyst as incorporating the Real are manifold and affect psychoanalytic practice with regard to the position and the interventions of the analyst. Specifically, interventions targeted at provoking changes in defenses against experiences of excess or senselessness are discussed and illustrated with case vignettes and a published case. With transference considered the navel of the treatment, the necessity that traumatic material will emerge in relation to the analyst becomes clear

Some preliminary notes on an empirical test of Freud’s theory on depression

A review of the literature indicates that empirical researchers have difficulty translating Freud’s theory on depression into appropriate research questions and hypotheses. In their attempt to do so, the level of complexity in Freud’s work is often lost. As a result, what is empirically tested is no more than a caricature of the original theory. To help researchers avoid such problems, this study presents a conceptual analysis of Freud’s theory of depression as it is presented in Mourning and Melancholia (Freud, 1917). In analyzing Freud’s theory on the etiology of depression, it is essential to differentiate between (1) an identification with the satisfying and frustrating aspects of the love object, (2) the inter- and an intrapersonal loss of the love object, and (3) conscious and unconscious dynamics. A schematic representation of the mechanism of depression is put forward and a research design by which this schema can be empirically investigated is outlined
