Sample of Integrated Labour Market Biographies (SIAB) 1975-2008
"The Research Data Centre of the German Federal Employment Agency provides high quality micro data on the German labour market. With the Sample of Integrated Labour Market Biographies (SIAB), it offers a new data set suited for the analysis of individual working careers. Compared to its predecessor, the IAB Employment Samples (IABS), the SIAB contains both a longer observation period and more information on individual labour market histories. It can be regarded as the most comprehensive administrative micro-level data set on employment histories that is currently available for Germany." The knowledge economy and the economic crisis in Germany. Regional development, structural change and labor market regions
Regions in Germany are facing an intensifying structural change towards the knowledge economy which is affecting spatial patterns of growth. . Features of such a change know many facets: fierce competition for skilled, mobile and motivated labor force, unemployment of non-qualified labor, longer commutes, multi-local households, re-concentration of the value chain, increased knowledge intensity of innovations, triple-helix collaborative ventures, structural weakness of public budgets, etcetera. These changes result in uneven spatial development, concentration in polycentric large-scale urban regions and increase in spatial disparities. The question arises how this structural change affects the territory of Germany, where securing equivalent living conditions still counts among the basic constitutional principles. We hypothesize that knowledge intensive employment tends to concentrate in two different spatial environments: (1) urban metropolitan centers and (2) network nodes with specialized knowledge resources. Both spatial configurations qualify by their combination of agglomeration economies and network economies. And both spatial environments tend to provide an optimum of geographical proximity and relational proximity, which eventually enable systematic knowledge creation. We test our hypothesis by analyzing the employment from 1998 to 2010 in 16 branches of the knowledge economy with a shift-share analysis. We argue that structural change and the economic crisis from 2009 intensify regional disparities while inducing relative employment shifts
Since 2006, the IAB develops classifications of job centres, which are regulated according to the Social Code Book (SGB) II. These classifications account for the fact that there are substantial disparities in the economic or social structure of German regions. These disparities affect the work of local job centres and must be observed if performance figures are compared across regions. This is accomplished by grouping job centres with similar regional conditions into distinct types. The classifications are updated after several years to account for changing conditions. The present revision goes far beyond a simple update. In principle, it pursues two objectives: for the first time, all three target dimensions of the SGB II are explicitly incorporated into the classification process with equal weights. Additionally, the new types put a stronger focus on factors specific for the job centres regulated by the SGB II. This report documents the revision in detail and presents its results

Filling the Gap: The Consequences of Collaborator Loss in Corporate R&D
We examine how collaborator loss affects knowledge workers in corporate R&D. We argue that such a loss affects the remaining collaborators not only by reducing their team-specific capital (as argued in the prior literature) but also by increasing their bargaining power over the employer, who is in need of filling the gap left by the lost collaborator to ensure the continuation of R&D projects. This shift in bargaining power may, in turn, lead to benefits, such as additional resources or more attractive working conditions. These benefits can partially compensate for the negative effect of reduced team-specific capital on productivity and influence the career trajectories of the remaining collaborators. We empirically investigate the consequences of collaborator loss by exploiting 845 unexpected deaths of active inventors. We find that inventor death has a moderate negative effect on the productivity of the remaining collaborators. This negative effect disappears when we focus on the remaining collaborators who work for the same employer as the deceased inventor. Moreover, this group is more likely to be promoted and less likely to leave their current employer
Age- and gender-based comorbidity categories in general practitioner and pulmonology patients with COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a debilitating medical condition often accompanied by multiple chronic conditions. COPD is more frequent among older adults and affects both genders. The aim of the current cross-sectional survey was to characterize chronic comorbidities stratified by gender and age among patients with COPD under the care of general practitioners (GP) and pulmonologists, using real-world patient data. A total of 7966 COPD patients (women: 45%) with more than 5 years of the observation period in the practice were examined using 60 different Chronic comorbid conditions (CCC) and Elixhauser measures. More than 9 in 10 patients had at least one, and 51.7% had more than three comorbidities. No gender difference was found in the number of comorbidities. However, men had higher Elixhauser-van Walraven index scores than women, and the types of comorbidities differed by gender. An increasing number of comorbidities was seen with aging but the patients in their 30s and 40s also had a high number of comorbidities. Moreover, GP patients had a higher number and a wider array of documented comorbidities than pulmonology patients did. Psychological comorbidities were common in all patients, but particularly among younger patients. These findings around gender- and age-stratified comorbidities under the care of GPs and pulmonologists have implications for the choice of data provenience for decision-making analysis and treatment selection and success
First Study of Combined Blazar Light Curves with FACT and HAWC
For studying variable sources like blazars, it is crucial to achieve unbiased
monitoring, either with dedicated telescopes in pointing mode or survey
instruments. At TeV energies, the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC)
observatory monitors approximately two thirds of the sky every day. It uses the
water Cherenkov technique, which provides an excellent duty cycle independent
of weather and season. The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) monitors a
small sample of sources with better sensitivity, using the imaging air
Cherenkov technique. Thanks to its camera with silicon-based photosensors, FACT
features an excellent detector performance and stability and extends its
observations to times with strong moonlight, increasing the duty cycle compared
to other imaging air Cherenkov telescopes. As FACT and HAWC have overlapping
energy ranges, a joint study can exploit the longer daily coverage given that
the observatories' locations are offset by 5.3 hours. Furthermore, the better
sensitivity of FACT adds a finer resolution of features on hour-long time
scales, while the continuous duty cycle of HAWC ensures evenly sampled
long-term coverage. Thus, the two instruments complement each other to provide
a more complete picture of blazar variability. In this presentation, the first
joint study of light curves from the two instruments will be shown, correlating
long-term measurements with daily sampling between air and water Cherenkov
telescopes. The presented results focus on the study of the variability of the
bright blazars Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 during the last two years featuring various
flaring activities.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Contribution to the 6th International Symposium
