    Canavanin is a basic amino acid of the constitutional formula NH2?C(NH)?NH?O?CH2?CH2?CH(NH2)?COOH, which was found in Jack bean by Kitagawa and Tomiyama. Canavanin is the first example of the compounds of a new chemical group, guanidoxy group NH2?C(NH)?NH?0-, which is not yet known in the literature of organic chemistry. Canalin is a mono-amino acid of the constitutional formula NH2?O?CH2-CH2?CH(NH2)?COOH, which is produced from canavanin, liberating one molecule of urea, by the action of the liver ferment, canavanase. Canalin is also the first instance for the deriv a tive of hydroxylamine to be found in nature.カナバニンは分子式 C5H12O3N4 有し, 其性質アルギニンに似たる一種の鹽基性アミノ酸にして, 1929年刀豆中より北川及富山氏(1)の發見分離せるものなり。著者等は肝臟に於る尿素の生成機構を研究中, 生成尿素をウレアーゼ法にて定量せんため, 供試肝臟浸出液にウレアーゼ劑として刀豆浸出液を加へて, 常法に依り其尿素量の測定を行へり。其際供試液を豫め加熱せるものに於ては, 其測定せる尿素量はウレアーゼ法に依るものも, xanthhydrol法に依り dixanthylurea として測定せるものもよく一致せる値を與へしも, 豫め加熱し置かざる場合にはウレアーゼ法に依る夫は高き値を示すを常とせり。且ウレァーゼ劑としての刀豆浸出液を多量に用ふる程, 或は供試液と刀豆浸出液を接觸せしむる時間の長き程其値高くなるを認めたり。茲に於て其原因を檢索し, 加熱する事に依りて斯る現象の停止さるゝ點等を考顧して, 異常値を與へる原因は肝臟中に含まるる或酵素の作用に依り, 刀豆中に含まるる或物質の分解されて尿素を遊離するに依るものなるを確めたり。依て進みて該物質の刀豆よりの分離を試み, 終にフラビアン酸鹽として純粹に分離するを得, 其新アミノ酸なるを確め, 刀豆の學名 Canavalia ensiformis に因みてカナバニン (canavanin) と命名せり。其自然界に於る存在に就ては廣く萱科の種子に就てフラビアン酸或はカナバニンの特異呈色反應を用ゐて檢索せしも, 之を含有するは刀豆及刀豆と屬を同ふする自然生の濱刀豆 (Canavalia lineata) に限らるるを知れり。刀豆中に於ても遊離状態に存在するのみにて, 其含有さるゝ蛋白質を構成するアミノ酸中には未だ檢出されざるなり。刀豆中に於る其含有量はフラビアン酸鹽として分離せるものより計算して2.5%前後の値を示し, 濱刀豆中にも略近き含有量を示せり。抑も植物種子中に遊離状態に斯くも多量のアミノ酸の含有さるるは實に異例に屬すと謂ふ可きなり

    The airscrew theory in consideration of the contraction or expansion of its slipstream and the variation of the pitch of its vortex sheets in the slipstream is derived. The calculation charts, which are necessary for the application of this theory to practical calculation of the performance of an airscrew, are provided. The method of application of this theory to practical case is described precisely. The present theory is applied to the calculation of a four-bladed windmill and discussions are made about the results of the calculation.     The experimental data, which can be the object of the comparison with the theory, and in which the data of the drag coefficients of the windmills are contained, are obtained for the 2, 3, 4 and 6 bladed windmills. The simple formulas for the calculation of the coefficients of torque, drag and power of windmills are found, and these formulas agree well with the results of the experiments. The distributions of the lift coefficients along the blades are calculated by these formulas at the maximum power states.     THE HYDRODYNAMICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE THICKNESS OF WINDBREAKS

    The wind tunnel experiment and the outdoor experiment of windbreaks having various number of rows are carried out. In the wind tunnel the states of vortex region are observed with worsted and the mean wind velocity distributions are measured with the Prandtl pitot-static tube and the Robinson-anemometer, and the relation between these results and the number of rows of the obstacles are discussed.
