Decay of the Mediator Particle at Threshold
A light mediator particle is often predicted in the dark sector scenario,
which weakly interacts with the standard model (SM) particles. The weakness of
the interaction is usually described by a small coupling; however, the small
coupling does not always guarantee the weakness of the interaction. When the
mass of the mediator particle lies in a threshold region, the so-called
threshold singularity may emerge, and then the perturbative calculation fails.
This singularity causes several effects, e.g., the mixing between the mediator
particle and bound states, the Sommerfeld effect on the final state of the
mediator particle decay, etc. Taking the minimal model of the vector mediator
particle decaying mainly into the SM particles as an example, we develop a
method to describe the singularity quantitatively. We also calculate some
physical quantities using this method, such as the lifetime of the mediator
particle, and find that those could be significantly altered compared with the
result of the perturbative calculation.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure
Experience of Psychoeduation in Schools and Its Effect on University Students' Adjustment.
The aims of this study were twofold. One was to comprehend the extent of experience to which university students had psychoeducation in Japanese elementary, junior high and high schools. The other was to explore relations between that experience and students' present adjustment. Participants were 656 university students who completed a series of questionnaires. The results indicated as follows: University students experienced a variety of psychoeducation in elementary, junior high and high schools; approximately 70% of students had the psychoeducation acknowledged in the ministry's curriculum guideline or its notification; and the psychoeducation directly treating stress and emotions was less likely to be experienced. It appears that specific types of psychoeducation such as self-esteem education and depression/suicidal prevention education that students have experienced associated with better adjustment than others did. Especially, the experience in elementary schools showed stronger relationships to the adjustment than one in high schools
Physical properties of portland cement based concrete exposed at a depth of 3520 m in the Nankai Trough
Concrete is widely used in large-scale construction of submarine infrastructure because of its high strength, durability, and ease of handling. However, knowledge of its durability in deep seawater is lacking. In the deep sea, materials are exposed to high pressures and low temperatures, which may cause early deterioration of concrete over time. Concrete materials may also be affected by the chemical composition of seawater, which induces the leaching of calcium. In situ exposure tests are therefore important for understanding degradation processes in the deep sea. In this study, Portland cement based concrete specimens were placed at a depth of 3520 m on the northern edge of the Nankai Trough in 2018 and retrieved in 2019, in the deepest exposure testing conducted to date. Here we provide an outline of the tests, describe the physical properties of materials exposed to deep seawater, freshwater, and air, and discuss possible concrete degradation mechanisms
An Empirical Study of Electric Power Demand Control by Real-time Feedback of Consumption Levels: Case of Nushima Island Households
AbstractElectric power demand management will play an important role in the creation of smart-energy communities. We are conducting a field experiment on the real-time feedback of electric power consumption via smart meters and tablet PCs with the participation of 51 households on Nushima Island, one of Japan's remote islands. Our estimate of the effect of feedback in reducing power demand by panel data analysis has revealed that such feedback achieves a saving of 7.6 percent in electric power demand
Perfusion MRI for brain tumors
Purpose : To compare data on brain tumors derived from intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and arterial spin labeling (ASL) imaging with multiple parameters obtained on dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) perfusion MRI and to clarify the characteristics of IVIM and ASL perfusion data from the viewpoint of cerebral blood flow (CBF) analysis. Methods : ASL-CBF and IVIM techniques as well as DSC examination were performed in 24 patients with brain tumors. The IVIM data were analyzed with the two models. The relative blood flow (rBF), relative blood volume (rBV) corrected relative blood volume (crBV), mean transit time (MTT), and leakage coefficient (K2) were obtained from the DSC MRI data. Results : The ASL-CBF had the same tendency as the perfusion parameters derived from the DSC data, but the permeability from the vessels had less of an effect on the ASL-CBF. The diffusion coefficient of the fast component on IVIM contained more information on permeability than the f value. Conclusion : ASL-CBF is more suitable for the evaluation of perfusion in brain tumors than IVIM parameters. ASL-CBF and IVIM techniques should be carefully selected and the biological significance of each parameter should be understood for the correct comprehension of the pathological status of brain tumors
Reproducibility of CBF using pCASL
Purpose : To determine the reproducibility of corrected quantitative cerebral blood flow (qCBF) through measurement of transit flow time using multi-delay three-dimensional pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL) in healthy men and women and to evaluate the differences in qCBF between not only men and women, but also the follicular and luteal phases of the women’s menstrual cycle. Methods : The participants were 16 healthy volunteers (8 men and 8 women ; mean age, 25.3 years). Two MRI were conducted for all participants ; female participants were conducted in the follicular and luteal phases. The reproducibility of qCBF values was evaluated by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and differences between the two groups were estimated by voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis. Results : The qCBF values were lower in men than in women, and those in females were significantly different between the follicular and luteal phases (P < 0.05). In VBM analysis, the qCBF values of the lower frontal lobes were significantly higher in women than in men (P < 0.05). The qCBF values of the frontal pole were significantly higher in the follicular phase than in the luteal phase (P < 0.01). Conclusion : Multi-delay pCASL can reveal physiological and sex differences in cerebral perfusion
