Track train dynamics analysis and test program: Methodology development for the derailment safety analysis of six-axle locomotives
The operational safety of six axle locomotives is analyzed. A locomotive model with corresponding data on suspension characteristics, a method of track defect characterization, and a method of characterizing operational safety are used. A user oriented software package was developed as part of the methodology and was used to study the effect (on operational safety) of various locomotive parameters and operational conditions such as speed, tractive effort, and track curvature. Metal Abundances in the Magellanic Stream
We report on the first metallicity determination for gas in the Magellanic
Stream, using archival HST GHRS data for the background targets Fairall 9, III
Zw 2, and NGC 7469. For Fairall 9, using two subsequent HST revisits and new
Parkes Multibeam Narrowband observations, we have unequivocally detected the
MSI HI component of the Stream (near its head) in SII1250,1253 yielding a
metallicity of [SII/H]=-0.55+/-0.06(r)+/-0.2(s), consistent with either an SMC
or LMC origin and with the earlier upper limit set by Lu et al. (1994). We also
detect the saturated SiII1260 line, but set only a lower limit of
[SiII/H]>-1.5. We present serendipitous detections of the Stream, seen in
MgII2796,2803 absorption with column densities of (0.5-1)x10^13 cm^-2 toward
the Seyfert galaxies III Zw 2 and NGC 7469. These latter sightlines probe gas
near the tip of the Stream (80 deg down-Stream of Fairall 9). For III Zw 2, the
lack of an accurate HI column density and the uncertain MgIII ionization
correction limits the degree to which we can constrain [Mg/H]; a lower limit of
[MgII/HI]>-1.3 was found. For NGC 7469, an accurate HI column density
determination exists, but the extant FOS spectrum limits the quality of the
MgII column density determination, and we conclude that [MgII/HI]>-1.5.
Ionization corrections associated with MgIII and HII suggest that the
corresponding [Mg/H] may range lower by 0.3-1.0 dex. However, an upward
revision of 0.5-1.0 dex would be expected under the assumption that the Stream
exhibits a dust depletion pattern similar to that seen in the Magellanic
Clouds. Remaining uncertainties do not allow us to differentiate between an LMC

Probing the Magnetized Interstellar Medium Surrounding the Planetary Nebula Sh 2-216
We present 1420 MHz polarization images of a 2.5 X 2.5 degree region around
the planetary nebula (PN) Sh 2-216. The images are taken from the Canadian
Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS). An arc of low polarized intensity appears
prominently in the north-east portion of the visible disk of Sh 2-216,
coincident with the optically identified interaction region between the PN and
the interstellar medium (ISM). The arc contains structural variations down to
the ~1 arcminute resolution limit in both polarized intensity and polarization
angle. Several polarization-angle "knots" appear along the arc. By comparison
of the polarization angles at the centers of the knots and the mean
polarization angle outside Sh 2-216, we estimate the rotation measure (RM)
through the knots to be -43 +/- 10 rad/m^2. Using this estimate for the RM and
an estimate of the electron density in the shell of Sh 2-216, we derive a
line-of-sight magnetic field in the interaction region of 5.0 +/- 2.0 microG.
We believe it more likely the observed magnetic field is interstellar than
stellar, though we cannot completely dismiss the latter possibility. We
interpret our observations via a simple model which describes the ISM magnetic
field around Sh 2-216, and comment on the potential use of old PNe as probes of

An Extragalactic HI Cloud with No Optical Counterpart?
We report the discovery, from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), of an
isolated cloud of neutral hydrogen which we believe to be extragalactic. The HI
mass of the cloud (HIPASS J1712-64) is very low, 1.7 x 10^7 Msun, using an
estimated distance of ~3.2 Mpc. Most significantly, we have found no optical
companion to this object to very faint limits (mu(B)~ 27 mag arcsec^-2). HIPASS
J1712-64 appears to be a binary system similar to, but much less massive than,
HI 1225+01 (the Virgo HI Cloud) and has a size of at least 15 kpc. The mean
velocity dispersion, measured with the Australia Telescope Compact Array
(ATCA), is only 4 km/s for the main component and because of the weak or
non-existent star-formation, possibly reflects the thermal linewidth (T<2000 K)
rather than bulk motion or turbulence. The peak column density for HIPASS
J1712-64, from the combined Parkes and ATCA data, is only 3.5 x 10^19 cm^-2,
which is estimated to be a factor of two below the critical threshold for star
formation. Apart from its significantly higher velocity, the properties of
HIPASS J1712-64 are similar to the recently recognised class of Compact High
Velocity Clouds. We therefore consider the evidence for a Local Group or
Galactic origin, although a more plausible alternative is that HIPASS J1712-64
was ejected from the interacting Magellanic Cloud/Galaxy system at
perigalacticon ~ 2 x 10^8 yr ago.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, AJ accepte
Polarimetric variations of binary stars. IV. Pre-main-sequence spectroscopic binaries located in Taurus, Auriga, and Orion
We present polarimetric observations of 14 pre-main-sequence (PMS) binaries
located in the Taurus, Auriga, and Orion star forming regions. The majority of
the average observed polarizations are below 0.5%, and none are above 0.9%.
After removal of estimates of the interstellar polarization, about half the
binaries have an intrinsic polarization above 0.5%, even though most of them do
not present other evidences for the presence of circumstellar dust. Various
tests reveal that 77% of the PMS binaries have or possibly have a variable
polarization. LkCa3, Par1540, and Par2494 present detectable periodic and
phase-locked variations. The periodic polarimetric variations are noisier and
of a lesser amplitude (~0.1%) than for other types of binaries, such as hot
stars. This could be due to stochastic events that produce deviations in the
average polarization, a non-favorable geometry (circumbinary envelope), or the
nature of the scatterers (dust grains are less efficient polarizers than
electrons). Par1540 is a Weak-line TTauri Star, but nonetheless has enough dust
in its environment to produce detectable levels of polarization and variations.
A fourth interesting case is W134, which displays rapid changes in polarization
that could be due to eclipses. We compare the observations with some of our
numerical simulations, and also show that an analysis of the periodic
polarimetric variations with the Brown, McLean, & Emslie (BME) formalism to
find the orbital inclination is for the moment premature: non-periodic events
introduce stochastic noise that partially masks the periodic low-amplitude
variations and prevents the BME formalism from finding a reasonable estimate of

Evidence for Asphericity in the Type IIn Supernova 1998S
We present optical spectropolarimetry obtained at the Keck-II 10-m telescope
on 1998 March 7 UT along with total flux spectra spanning the first 494 days
after discovery (1998 March 2 UT) of the peculiar type IIn supernova (SN)
1998S. The SN is found to exhibit a high degree of linear polarization,
implying significant asphericity for its continuum-scattering environment.
Prior to removal of the interstellar polarization, the polarization spectrum is
characterized by a flat continuum (at p ~ 2%) with distinct changes in
polarization associated with both the broad (FWZI >= 20,000 km/s) and narrow
(unresolved, FWHM < 300 km/s) line emission seen in the total flux spectrum.
When analyzed in terms of a polarized continuum with unpolarized broad-line
recombination emission, an intrinsic continuum polarization of p ~ 3% results
(the highest yet found for a SN), suggesting a global asphericity of >= 45%
from the oblate, electron-scattering dominated models of Hoflich (1991). The
smooth, blue continuum evident at early times is shown to be inconsistent with
a reddened, single-temperature blackbody, instead having a color temperature
that increases with decreasing wavelength. Broad emission-line profiles with
distinct blue and red peaks are seen in the total flux spectra at later times,
perhaps suggesting a disk-like or ring-like morphology for the dense (n_e ~
10^7 cm^{-3}) circumstellar medium. Implications of the circumstellar
scattering environment for the spectropolarimetry are discussed, as are the

Polarimetry and Unification of Low-Redshift Radio Galaxies
We have made high-quality measurements of the polarization spectra of 13 FR
II radio galaxies and taken polarization images for 11 of these with the Keck
telescopes. Seven of the eight narrow-line radio galaxies (NLRG) are polarized,
and six of the seven show prominent broad Balmer lines in polarized light. The
broad lines are also weakly visible in total flux. Some of the NLRG show
bipolar regions with roughly circumferential polarization vectors, revealing a
large reflection nebula illuminated by a central source. Our observations
powerfully support the hidden quasar hypothesis for some NLRG. Classification
as NLRG, broad-line radio galaxy (BLRG), or quasar therefore depends on
orientation. However, not all objects fit into this unification scheme. Our
sample is biased towards objects known in advance to be polarized, but the
combination of our results with those of Hill, Goodrich and DePoy (1996) show
that at least 6 out of a complete, volume and flux-limited sample of 9 FR II

Milestones in the Observations of Cosmic Magnetic Fields
Magnetic fields are observed everywhere in the universe. In this review, we
concentrate on the observational aspects of the magnetic fields of Galactic and
extragalactic objects. Readers can follow the milestones in the observations of
cosmic magnetic fields obtained from the most important tracers of magnetic
fields, namely, the star-light polarization, the Zeeman effect, the rotation
measures (RMs, hereafter) of extragalactic radio sources, the pulsar RMs, radio
polarization observations, as well as the newly implemented sub-mm and mm
polarization capabilities.

Mechanical Design Aspects of The LHC Beam screen
Forty-four kilometers of the LHC beam vacuum system [1,2] will be equipped with a perforated co-axial liner, the so-called beam screen. Operating between 5 K and 20 K, the beam screen reduces heat loads to the 1.9 K helium bath of the superconducting magnets and minimises dynamic vacuum effects. Constructed from low magnetic permeability stainless steel with a 50 mm inner layer of high purity copper, the beam screen must provide a maximum aperture for the beam whilst resisting the induced forces due to eddy currents at magnet quench. The mechanical engineering challenges are numerous, and include stringent requirements on geometry, material selection, manufacturing techniques and cleanliness. The industrial fabrication of these 16 metre long UHV components is now in its prototyping phase. A description of the beam screen is given, together with details of the experimental programme aimed at validating the design choices, and results of the first industrial prototypes
Proposing new variables for the identification of strategic groups in franchising
The identification of strategic groups in the Spanish franchising area is the
main aim of this study. The authors have added some new strategic variables (not
used before) to the study and have classified franchisors between sectors and
distribution strategy. The results reveal the existence of four perfectly differentiated
strategic groups (types of franchisors). One of the major implications of this study is
that the variables that build a strategic group vary depending on the respective sector the network operates in and its distribution strategy. This fact indicates that including sector and distribution strategy is absolutely necessary to achieve good classifications of franchisor type
