    Graviton plus vector boson production to NLO in QCD at the LHC

    We present the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the associated production of the vector gauge boson (Z/W±Z/W^\pm) and the graviton in the large extra dimension model at the LHC. We estimate the impact of the QCD corrections on the total cross sections as well as the differential distributions of the gauge bosons and find that they are significant. We also study the dependence of the cross sections on the arbitrary factorization scale and show the reduction in the scale uncertainties at NLO level. Further, we discuss the ultraviolet sensitivity of the theoretical predictions.Comment: 51 pages and 27 figure

    Angular distribution of Drell-Yan process at hadron colliders to NLO-QCD in models of TeV scale gravity

    In TeV scale gravity models, for dilepton production at hadron colliders, we present the NLO-QCD corrections for the double differential cross section in the invariant mass and scattering angle. For both ADD and RS models, the quantitative impact of QCD corrections for extra dimension searches at LHC and Tevatron are investigated. We present the K-factors for both ADD and RS models at LHC and Tevatron. Inclusion of QCD corrections to NLO stabilises the cross section with respect to scale variations.Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, version to appear in NP

    This Cousins Research Group report includes two articles by Kettering Foundation president David Mathews that were published previously. "The Public for Public Schools Is Slipping" was first published in Education Week in 1995. The second piece, "Putting the Public Back into Public Education: An Old-Fashioned Remedy for a Troubled Relationship," appeared in the Summer 2015 issue of the National Civic Review. Both pieces look at the growing disconnect between the schools and the public they serve. They suggest that the usual institutional responses to repair the troubled relationship (e.g., standardized tests or better public relations) have failed to remedy the problem. The key to bridging the divide between the schools and the public may actually be found on the citizens' side. Mathews observes, "Citizens themselves and their organizations have to be actors who bring educational resources in the community to complement what the schools do.

    In this Cousins Research Group Report, David Mathews describes two different civic engagement movements. One is underway in higher education. On campuses across the country, leadership and service learning programs are growing, and students are taught civic skills, including civil dialogue. In addition, university partnerships with nearby communities offer technical assistance, professional advice, and access to institutional resources. The other is occurring off campus, in communities that are trying to cope with natural disasters, economic change, and other problems that threaten everyone's well-being. In these places, citizens say they want to come together as communities to maintain their communities. Unfortunately, they often have difficulty finding institutions that understand their agenda.Why are these two civic movements in danger of passing like the proverbial ships in the night? Mathews explores this disconnect, noting, "It would seem that two civic engagement movements, occurring at the same time and often in the same locations, would be closely allied -- perhaps mutually reinforcing. That doesn't seem to be happening very often." He goes on to suggest how these efforts might become mutually supportive

    The pair of large radio lobes in the Virgo cluster, each about 23 kpc in radius, have curiously sharp outer edges where the radio-synchrotron continuum flux declines abruptly. However, just adjacent to this sharp transition, the radio flux increases. This radio limb-brightening is observed over at least half of the perimeter of both lobes. We describe slowly propagating steady state diffusion fronts that explain these counterintuitive features. Because of the natural buoyancy of radio lobes, the magnetic field is largely tangent to the lobe boundary, an alignment that polarizes the radio emission and dramatically reduces the diffusion coefficient of relativistic electrons. As cosmic ray electrons diffuse slowly into the cluster gas, the local magnetic field and gas density are reduced as gas flows back toward the radio lobe. Radio emission peaks can occur because the synchrotron emissivity increases with magnetic field and then decreases with the density of non-thermal electrons. A detailed comparison of steady diffusion fronts with quantitative radio observations may reveal information about the spatial variation of magnetic fields and the diffusion coefficient of relativistic electrons. On larger scales, some reduction of the gas density inside the Virgo lobes due to cosmic ray pressure must occur and may be measurable. Such X-ray observations could reveal important information about the presence of otherwise unobservable non-thermal components such as relativistic electrons of low energy or proton cosmic rays.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, Accepted by Ap
