Medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency in gene-targeted mice

Medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency is the most common inherited disorder of mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation in humans. To better understand the pathogenesis of this disease, we developed a mouse model for MCAD deficiency (MCAD-/-) by gene targeting in embryonic stem (ES) cells. The MCAD-/- mice developed an organic aciduria and fatty liver, and showed profound cold intolerance at 4 °C with prior fasting. The sporadic cardiac lesions seen in MCAD-/- mice have not been reported in human MCAD patients. There was significant neonatal mortality of MCAD -/- pups demonstrating similarities to patterns of clinical episodes and mortality in MCAD-deficient patients. The MCAD-deficient mouse reproduced important aspects of human MCAD deficiency and is a valuable model for further analysis of the roles of fatty acid oxidation and pathogenesis of human diseases involving fatty acid oxidation. © 2005 Tolwani et al

Определение трещиностойкости малоразмерных образцов технического титана ВТ1-0

Целью работы является ознакомление с новой методикой определения трещиностойкости конструкционных материалов, разрабатываемой в лаборатории физической мезомеханики ИФПМ СО РАН, и проверка методики на примере технического титана ВТ1-0. Испытания проводятся методом расклинивания малоразмерных образцов с шевронным надрезом. По полученным данным строится диаграмма нагружения в координатах "сила давления на клин – смещение сторон надреза". В качестве основной характеристики трещиностойкости определяется удельная энергия разрушения.The aim of this work is to study a new technique for determining the fracture toughness of structural materials and testing the technique using the samples of technical titanium VT1-0. The technique is developed in the laboratory of physical mesomechanics of ISPMS SB RAS. Tests are carried out by the method of wedging small-sized samples with a chevron notch. According to the obtained data, a loading diagram is constructed in the coordinates "force of pressure on the wedge - displacement of the sides of the incision". The specific fracture energy is determined as the main characteristic of crack resistance

Examination of macro- and microelements distribution between total extract and fractions for nootropic plant-derived raw material Alfredia cernua

The paper dwells on a quantitative determination of macro- and microelements in the ethanol Alfredia cernua extract and its chloroform, ethyl acetate, and butanol fractions. The distribution of macro- and microelements in the extract and fractions was investigated to further study of the interrelation between chemical composition and nootropic activity Alfredia cernua. It is shown that B, Fe, and Sn is mainly accumulated in butanol and Si, P, Al - in chloroform fraction respectively, but most macro- and microelements remain in the ethanol extract
