Objective: This work aimed to clarify the association of the severity of periodontitis and polymorphism in osteoprotegerin (OPG) (T950C) inIndonesian men. Methods: For DNA extraction, blood serum samples were used from 100 consenting Indonesian males for whom also the status of periodontitis hadbeen classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism techniques were applied toevaluate OPG (T950C) polymorphism, using Hind II restriction enzyme and electrophoresis on agarose gel to separate the indicative fragments. Results: The genotype distribution of the OPG (T950C) polymorphism had an appearance of an increasing percentage of TT genotype (allele T) withincreasing severitPeriodontitisy of periodontitis. The CC genotype was relatively rare (1%) in the tested Indonesian male population. Conclusions: The results show no significant association between the severity of periodontitis and polymorphism of OPG (T950C) in Indonesian men

Pengaruh Pendidikan Kesehatan terhadap Pengetahuan Kepala Keluarga Tentang Pertolongan Pertama pada Gigitan Anjing Rabies di Desa Sinampangnyo Kecamatan Pagimana: The Effect of Health Education on the Knowledge of the Head of the Family About First Aid for Rabies Dog Bites in Sinampangnyo Village Pagiman District

&nbsp

Osteoporosis is a silent disease, i.e. the disease will progress without symptoms or pain until bones start to break. Densitometry examinations to diagnose osteoporosis is relatively expensive for most people in Indonesia. Kusdhany et al have produced a mandibular density index specific for Deutero-malay postmenopausal women (POSTUR-P). This index can be used to predict osteoporosis risk in mandibular and other bones. The objective of this research was to try out POSTUR-P before using it in the community. The study was a diagnostic test, on 31 Teratai clinic postmenopausal patients of Ciptomangunkusumo Hospital between 50-75 years of age from June to October 2004 and fulfilling inclusion criteria. Densitometry on lumbal and femur bones was used as a gold standard. The result of this study showed that POSTUR-P has high sensitivity and moderate specificity, and appears to be a good screening tool to indicate osteoporosis cases

Background: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by periodontal pathogens and influenced by multiple risk factors such as genetics, smoking habit, age and systemic diseases. The inflammatory cascade is characterized by the release of C-reactive protein (CRP). Periodontitis has been reported to have plausible links to increased level of CRP, which in turn has been associated to elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Purpose: The purpose of this study was t o investigate the relationship amongst the severity of periodontitis, CRP level in blood and CRP (-717 C>T) gene polymorphism in male Indonesian smokers and non-smokers. Method: The severity of periodontitis was assessed for 97 consenting male Indonesian smokers and non-smokers. The CRP level of the subjects was determined by using immuno-turbidimetric assay performed in PARAHITA Diagnostic Center Laboratory ISO 9001: 2000 Cert No. 15225/2. The rate of CRP (-717C>T) gene polymorphism was determined by using PCR-RFLP in Oral Biology Laboratory, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia. Result: The results suggest that the CRP protein level is not significantly associated with the tested CRP gene polymorphism (p>0.05). Also, while the severity of periodontitis increased significantly with subject age, the CRP level in blood serum was not significantly related to the severity of periodontitis. The genotypes of the tested polymorphism did not show significant association with the severity of periodontitis either in smokers or in the combined population including smokers and non-smokers. The results naturally do not exclude such associations, but suggest that to discern the differences the sample size must be considerably increased. Conclusion: The CRP (-717C>T) gene polymorphism and CRP level in blood serum were not found to be associated with the severity of periodontitis in male smokers or in the combined population of smokers and non-smokers
