    Genetic Deletion of Vasohibin-2 Exacerbates Ischemia-Reperfusion-Induced Acute Kidney Injury

    Acute kidney injury (AKI) has been increasingly recognized as a risk factor for transition to chronic kidney disease. Recent evidence suggests that endothelial damage in peritubular capillaries can accelerate the progression of renal injury. Vasohibin-2 (VASH2) is a novel proangiogenic factor that promotes tumor angiogenesis. However, the pathophysiological roles of VASH2 in kidney diseases remain unknown. In the present study, we examined the effects of VASH2 deficiency on the progression of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury-induced AKI. I/R injury was induced by bilaterally clamping renal pedicles for 25 min in male wild-type (WT) andVash2homozygous knockout mice. Twenty-four hours later, I/R injury-induced renal dysfunction and tubular damage were more severe in VASH2-deficient mice than in WT mice, with more prominent neutrophil infiltration and peritubular capillary loss. After induction of I/R injury, VASH2 expression was markedly increased in injured renal tubules. These results suggest that VASH2 expression in renal tubular epithelial cells might be essential for alleviating I/R injury-induced AKI, probably through protecting peritubular capillaries and preventing inflammatory infiltration

    Perioperative vitamin K deficiency can cause severe coagulopathy rapidly. Vitamin K deficiency tends to be overlooked despite the elucidation of pathophysiology and countermeasures. The main causes of vitamin K deficiency are insufficient intake, low supply from intestinal bacteria, and synthesis inhibition of vitamin K by N-methyltetrazolethiol (N - MTT) contained antibiotics. We experienced three cases in which it was difficult to remove epidural catheter because of coagulation abnormality due to vitamin K deficiency after surgery. Vitamin K deficiency should be wary of when epidural catheter is indwelled or withdrawn from a patient who is administered with antibiotic containing N-MTT in the fasted state

    Background. Thymic carcinoids are rare disease to account for 2-4% of anterior mediastinal tumors. So, the clinicopathologic characters are not known enough. Case. A 67 years old man was followed up old myocardial infarction, and he was taken chest CT scan for evaluate coronary artery. It revealed three anterior mediastinal tumors and we diagnosed thymoma by needle biopsy. We treated by neoadjuvant chemotherapy(CAMP therapy), but it was ineffective. We performed thoracoscopic thymothymomectomy, and the pathological diagnosis was thymic atypical carcinoid. He is free of clinically event recurrence one year and a half after treatment. Conclusions. When we found an anterior mediastinal tumor, and if the clinical course is usually different, we should consider the possibility of a thymic carcinoid

    Eight fatal cases of tick-borne encephalitis with unusual hemorrhagic syndrome were identified in 1999 in the Novosibirsk Region, Russia. To study these strains, we sequenced cDNA fragments of protein E gene from six archival formalin-fixed brain samples. Phylogenetic analysis showed tick-borne encephalitis variants clustered with a Far Eastern subtype (homology 94.7%) but not with the Siberian subtype (82%)

    Short-Term Outcomes of Laparoscopic Distal Gastrectomy for Advanced Gastric Cancer

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) for advanced gastric cancer (AGC). Between April 2003 and March 2014, LDG was performed for 392 patients, 91 patients (23.2%) had histopathologically diagnosed AGC beyond T2 depth. The clinicopathological features, postoperative outcomes, mortality, morbidity, recurrence rate, and survivals of those patients were reviewed. The TNM stages of the tumor were IB in 26 patients (28.5%), IIA in 20 (21.9%), IIB in 18 (19.7%), IIIA in 13 (14.2%), IIIB in 6 (6.5%), IIIC in 6 (6.5%), and IV in 2 (2.1%). Major morbidity occurred in 14 patients (15.3%), with no postoperative mortality. Median follow-up was 24.5 months ; 10 patients developed recurrence during the follow-up period, and 10 patients died, including 6 cancer deaths. The 5-year overall and disease-free survival rates were 76.8% and 72.6%, respectively. By stage, OS/DFS was 92.3%/91.8% in stage IB, 85.4%/85.4% in stage II, and 49.3%/26.9% in stage III. Oncologic outcomes were good in patients with AGC, especially with stage IB-IIB, who underwent LDG. LDG appears to be an effective approach for treating stage IB and II gastric cancer

    Impact of Chronic Kidney Disease on the Presence and Severity of Aortic Stenosis in Patients at High Risk for Coronary Artery Disease

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>We evaluated the impact of chronic kidney disease (CKD) on the presence and severity of aortic stenosis (AS) in patients at high risk for coronary artery disease (CAD).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>One hundred and twenty consecutive patients who underwent invasive coronary angiography were enrolled. Aortic valve area (AVA) was calculated by the continuity equation using transthoracic echocardiography, and was normalized by body surface area (AVA index).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among all 120 patients, 78% had CAD, 55% had CKD (stage 3: 81%; stage 4: 19%), and 34% had AS (AVA < 2.0cm<sup>2</sup>). Patients with AS were older, more often female, and had a higher frequency of CKD than those without AS, but the prevalence of CAD and most other coexisting conventional risk factors was similar between patients with and without AS. Multivariate linear regression analysis indicated that only CKD and CAD were independent determinants of AVA index with standardized coefficients of -0.37 and -0.28, respectively. When patients were divided into 3 groups (group 1: absence of CKD and CAD, n = 16; group 2: presence of either CKD or CAD, n = 51; and group 3: presence of both CKD and CAD, n = 53), group 3 had the smallest AVA index (1.19 ± 0.30*# cm<sup>2</sup>/m<sup>2</sup>, *p < 0.05 vs. group 1: 1.65 ± 0.32 cm<sup>2</sup>/m<sup>2</sup>, and #p < 0.05 vs. group 2: 1.43 ± 0.29* cm<sup>2</sup>/m<sup>2</sup>) and the highest peak velocity across the aortic valve (1.53 ± 0.41*# m/sec; *p < 0.05 vs. group 1: 1.28 ± 0.29 m/sec, and #p < 0.05 vs. group 2: 1.35 ± 0.27 m/sec).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>CKD, even pre-stage 5 CKD, has a more powerful impact on the presence and severity of AS than other conventional risk factors for atherosclerosis in patients at high risk for CAD.</p

    The neutron and its role in cosmology and particle physics

    Experiments with cold and ultracold neutrons have reached a level of precision such that problems far beyond the scale of the present Standard Model of particle physics become accessible to experimental investigation. Due to the close links between particle physics and cosmology, these studies also permit a deep look into the very first instances of our universe. First addressed in this article, both in theory and experiment, is the problem of baryogenesis ... The question how baryogenesis could have happened is open to experimental tests, and it turns out that this problem can be curbed by the very stringent limits on an electric dipole moment of the neutron, a quantity that also has deep implications for particle physics. Then we discuss the recent spectacular observation of neutron quantization in the earth's gravitational field and of resonance transitions between such gravitational energy states. These measurements, together with new evaluations of neutron scattering data, set new constraints on deviations from Newton's gravitational law at the picometer scale. Such deviations are predicted in modern theories with extra-dimensions that propose unification of the Planck scale with the scale of the Standard Model ... Another main topic is the weak-interaction parameters in various fields of physics and astrophysics that must all be derived from measured neutron decay data. Up to now, about 10 different neutron decay observables have been measured, much more than needed in the electroweak Standard Model. This allows various precise tests for new physics beyond the Standard Model, competing with or surpassing similar tests at high-energy. The review ends with a discussion of neutron and nuclear data required in the synthesis of the elements during the "first three minutes" and later on in stellar nucleosynthesis.Comment: 91 pages, 30 figures, accepted by Reviews of Modern Physic

    A comparison of the exposure system of glycidol-related chemicals on the formation of glycidol-hemoglobin adducts

    Glycidol fatty acid esters that are present in foods are degraded in vivo to the animal carcinogen glycidol, which binds to the N-terminal valine of hemoglobin (Hb) to form N-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)valine (diHOPrVal) adducts. The existence of other chemicals that are converted to glycidol is unknown. To determine the effect of different exposure conditions on the formation of diHOPrVal adducts, several glycidol-related chemicals (3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol; 3-MCPD, epichlorohydrin, glyceraldehyde, acrylic acid, and 1,2-propanediol) were evaluated using in vitro and in vivo (single/repeated dose) methods. In vitro, the reaction of 3-MCPD or epichlorohydrin with human Hb produced 17% and 0.7% of diHOPrVal, as compared to equimolar glycidol, respectively. Following a single administration of glycidol-related compounds to ICR mice, diHOPrVal formation was observed only in the epichlorohydrin-treated group after day 5 of exposure. After 14 days of repeated dosing, the amounts of diHOPrVal produced by epichlorohydrin and 3-MCPD in vivo were &lt;1% of diHOPrVal produced by an equal molar concentration of glycidol. Furthermore, glyceraldehyde group produced 0.2% of diHOPrVal at the same molar concentration of glycidol equivalents, in which diHOPrVal formation could not be confirmed by the in vitro assay. The results indicate the usefulness of diHOPrVal as an exposure marker for glycidol; however, the contribution of its formation in vivo by exposure to various chemicals will be necessary to validate and interpret the results

    An fMRI analysis of the efficacy of Euler diagrams in logical reasoning

    We compared participant performance and brain activation changes during a syllogism-solving task with and with­ out Euler diagrams, using functional magnetic resonance imaging ( RI). Our experiment showed that when Euler diagrams were present, (i) response times in the task were signi cantly shorter than those in the usual reasoning task comprising only sentences, and (ii) the magnitude of activation in the left middle frontal gyrus (near BA 10), left inferior PFC (near BA 47), and left dorsal PFC (BA 6) was reduced. Result (i) provides evidence for the occurrence of cognitive offloading even when participants handle information of both sentences and diagrams in reasoning tasks. Result (ii) suggests that complex processes of inferences can be replaced by simple diagram manipulation. It is argued that cognitive details that are not fully speci ed by behavioral studies can be made salient using neuroscientific methods
