    Social media and student lifecycle: impact on career success

    Over the past few years online social networks have become one of the most popular applications on the Internet. Naturally, social media is attracting a significant attention from researchers probing its educational applicability. Online social networking services (SNS) offer a straightforward way to connect people and support information sharing and communication. University students are often ahead of the rest in the adoption of new technologies, and according to (Quan-Haase, 2007) their communication networks tend to be dense and multilayered. Extant literature abounds with evidence of business opportunities (e.g. Aldrich & Kim, 2007) and educational use (e.g. Mastrodicasa,2008) of social networks. However, very little research attention has been paid towards a systematic adoption of SNS throughout the complete student lifecycle . With the aim of achieving higher levels of success in learning as well as improving their career prospects. This study investigates the use of social media by business students. KU business students and students from four international HE institutions in Europe, including Russia and Greece, have participated in the study. Social media has the potential of providing an easy-to use platform to connect students throughout their entire lifecycle from aspiration rising, enrolment, learning and teaching leading on to employment, alumni communication and life-long learning. This is especially important as the stages of employability management and life-long learning take a centre stage in managing student expectations and influencing their decision of taking up places at which university

    The 21st century invites a perhaps begrudging acceptance of the role that technology plays in almost every aspect of daily living. Nevertheless, when it comes to incorporating it into language classes, even the most accepting and forward-thinking teachers may not be able to make the right choices all the time. Indeed, every language teacher could benefit from asking the following pertinent questions (Berk, 2010): How do you decide which technology to use in your classroom?; What criteria, if any, do you use to make an informed choice of technological tools?; Are these criteria related to the learners’ features, pedagogy, and learning outcomes? After reflecting on these questions, the next step should be to examine the research that has so far been conducted on the use of technology by Generation Y learners

    Unexplained cardiac arrest after near drowning in a young experienced swimmer: insight from cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging

    Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) is a well-established noninvasive imaging modality in clinical cardiology. Its ability to provide tissue characterization make it well suited for the study of patients with cardiac diseases. We describe a multi-modality imaging evaluation of a 45-year-old man who experienced a near drowning event during swimming. We underline the unique capability of tissue characterization provided by cMRI, which allowed detection of subtle, clinically unrecognizable myocardial damage for understanding the causes of sudden cardiac arrest and also showed the small damages caused by cardiopulmonary resuscitation

    International sport marketing : practical and future research implications

    Purpose &ndash; Sport is a global product and service that many people around the world enjoy playing, watching and participating in. Whilst there has been an abundance of global media attention on sporting events such as the Olympics and World Football Cup, there seems to be a lack of integration between the sports marketing and international business disciplines both from a practical and also academic standpoint. This paper aims to discuss international sport marketing and why it is an important attribute of business-to-business marketing. Design/methodology/approach &ndash; The aim of the paper is to provide practical implications and research avenues for those seeking to further investigate international sport marketing as a unique area of academic research. The introduction to the paper focuses on the importance of sport to the global economy and how entrepreneurship is ingrained in many sport businesses and organizations. Next, different areas of international business management that relate to entrepreneurial sport marketing ventures are discussed in terms of future research directions and practical implications. These include how entrepreneurial sport ventures affect internationalization, branding, corporate social responsibility, tourism, regional development, marketing and action sports.Findings &ndash; The paper concludes by finding that there are numerous research avenues for future research on international sport marketing that combine different areas of marketing together with the sport marketing and international business literature. In addition, there is enormous potential for linking the sports marketing and international business literature through focusing on entrepreneurial sport ventures that occur worldwide.Research limitations/implications &ndash; The authors demonstrate the need to take an international perspective of sports marketing and business-to-business relationships.Practical implications &ndash; The paper discusses how and why sport firms interact in the international marketplace and how future competition will benefit from more sport-based business-to-business partnerships.Originality/value &ndash; The paper examines the important area of international sports marketing and how businesses that are both profit and non-profit orientated collaborate. The paper explores the concept of international sports marketing, and discusses the practical and future research implications of this exciting new field of marketing research.<br /

    Conspicuity and muscle-invasiveness assessment for bladder cancer using VI-RADS: a multi-reader, contrast-free MRI study to determine optimal b-values for diffusion-weighted imaging

    Low-dose coronary calcium scoring CT using a dedicated reconstruction filter for kV-independent calcium measurements

    In this prospective, pilot study, we tested a kV-independent coronary artery calcium scoring CT protocol, using a novel reconstruction kernel (Sa36f). From December 2018 to November 2019, we performed an additional research scan in 61 patients undergoing clinical calcium scanning. For the standard protocol (120 kVp), images were reconstructed with a standard, medium-sharp kernel (Qr36d). For the research protocol (automated kVp selection), images were reconstructed with a novel kernel (Sa36f). Research scans were sequentially performed using a higher (cohort A, n = 31) and a lower (cohort B, n = 30) dose optimizer setting within the automatic system with customizable kV selection. Agatston scores, coronary calcium volumes, and radiation exposure of the standard and research protocol were compared. A phantom study was conducted to determine inter-scan variability. There was excellent correlation for the Agatston score between the two protocols (r = 0.99); however, the standard protocol resulted in slightly higher Agatston scores (29.4 [0-139.0] vs 17.4 [0-158.2], p = 0.028). The median calcium volumes were similar (11.5 [0-109.2] vs 11.2 [0-118.0] mm(3); p = 0.176), and the number of calcified lesions was not significantly different (p = 0.092). One patient was reclassified to another risk category. The research protocol could be performed at a lower kV and resulted in a substantially lower radiation exposure, with a median volumetric CT dose index of 4.1 vs 5.2 mGy, respectively (p < 0.001). Our results showed that a consistent coronary calcium scoring can be achieved using a kV-independent protocol that lowers radiation doses compared to the standard protocol

    College Students' Use and Understanding of an Electronic Social Network for Academics, Academic Help Seeking, and Academic Advising

    The arrival of a new generation of students, known as the Net Generation (Junco, 2010), into colleges and universities has demanded changes to the traditional administrative and support services provided on campuses across the nation. In times of ever-changing technological advances, colleges and universities have begun to utilize new and expanding forms of technological communication to interact with students regarding their academics. During the 2009-2010 academic year, one college, within a university located in the western United States, implemented an academic advising program through Facebook to proactively interact and advise students using the electronic social network. A case study involving six participants was conducted to determine how these students used and understood the use of Facebook for academics, academic help seeking, and academic advising. Results indicated that participants used the electronic social network site to validate their academically-related emotions and actions, build a community of academic support, and to seek help for prescriptive academic advising. Results from the study implied that postsecondary institutions should consider the implementation of similar electronic advising programs; the participants valued the use of Facebook for academic advising and considered the process beneficial for their educational progression and success
