    Structure analysis of the Ga-stabilized GaAs(001)-c(8x2) surface at high temperatures

    Structure of the Ga-stabilized GaAs(001)-c(8x2) surface has been studied using rocking-curve analysis of reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). The c(8x2) structure emerges at temperatures higher than 600C, but is unstable with respect to the change to the (2x6)/(3x6) structure at lower temperatures. Our RHEED rocking-curve analysis at high temperatures revealed that the c(8x2) surface has the structure which is basically the same as that recently proposed by Kumpf et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3586 (2001)]. We found that the surface atomic configurations are locally fluctuated at high temperatures without disturbing the c(8x2) periodicity.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    PETREL for Astrophysics and Carbon Business

    A multi-purpose 50kg class microsatellite hosting astrophysical mission and earth remote sensing, PETREL , will be launched in 2023. In the night side, PETREL observe the ultra-violet sky with a wide-field telescope covering 50 deg^2 for surveying transient objects related to supernovae, tidal disruption events, and gravitational wave events. Our UV telescope can detect the early phase UV emission from a neutron star merger occurred within 150 Mpc. In addition to the satellite observation, PETREL sends a detection alert including the coordinate and brightness of the UV transient to the ground via the real time communication network within several minutes after detection to conduct follow-up observations with the collaborating ground based observatories over the world. In the day side, PETREL observes the surface of the earth by using the tunable multi-spectral cameras and a ultra-compact hyperspectral camera. Our potential targets are the tropical forests (Green Carbon) and coastal zones (Blue Carbon) in the tropical areas to evaluating the global biological carbon strages. For this purpose PETREL will conduct multiple scale mapping collaborating with drones and small aircraft not only satellite. The obtained data will be used for academical research and for business applications. The technical difficulty of this satellite is that carries out multi-purpose with different requirements, such as astronomical observations which requires a quite high attitude stability and the earth observations requiring a high pointing accuracy, with limited resources. If it is possible, a novel small satellite system or a business style can be realized that can share the payload with academia and industry. PETREL has been adopted as Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration Program No.3 led by JAXA, and development is underway with the aim of launching in FY2023

    Phamacogenomics of Clozapine-Induced Agranulocytosis

    Background: Clozapine-induced agranulocytosis (CIA)/clozapine-induced granulocytopenia (CIG) (CIAG) is a life-threatening event for schizophrenic subjects treated with clozapine. Methods: To examine the genetic factor for CIAG, a genome-wide pharmacogenomic analysis was conducted using 50 subjects with CIAG and 2905 control subjects. Results: We identified a significant association in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region (rs1800625, p = 3.46 × 10−9, odds ratio [OR] = 3.8); therefore, subsequent HLA typing was performed. We detected a significant association of HLA-B*59:01 with CIAG (p = 3.81 × 10−8, OR = 10.7) and confirmed this association by comparing with an independent clozapine-tolerant control group (n = 380, p = 2.97 × 10−5, OR = 6.3). As we observed that the OR of CIA (OR: 9.3~15.8) was approximately double that in CIG (OR: 4.4~7.4), we hypothesized that the CIG subjects were a mixed population of those who potentially would develop CIA and those who would not develop CIA (non-CIA). This hypothesis allowed the proportion of the CIG who were non-CIA to be calculated, enabling us to estimate the positive predictive value of the nonrisk allele on non-CIA in CIG subjects. Assuming this model, we estimated that 1) ~50% of CIG subjects would be non-CIA; and 2) ~60% of the CIG subjects without the risk allele would be non-CIA and therefore not expected to develop CIA. Conclusions: Our results suggest that HLA-B*59:01 is a risk factor for CIAG in the Japanese population. Furthermore, if our model is true, the results suggest that rechallenging certain CIG subjects with clozapine may not be always contraindicated

    Bile canalicular abnormalities in the early phase of a mouse model of sclerosing cholangitis.

    [Background]The bile canaliculus is the smallest and first biliary channel and is formed by two or three adjacent hepatocytes. Previous studies of chronic cholangiopathies such as primary sclerosing cholangitis have focused on the bile ductules. However, little is known about the pathological alterations in bile canaliculi in the early phase of cholangiopathies. [Aim]To characterize the bile canalicular morphology in the early phase of sclerosing cholangitis we used 3, 5-diethoxycarbonyl-1, 4-dihydrocollidine-induced mouse model of sclerosing cholangitis. [Methods]Mice were fed a diet with 3, 5-diethoxycarbonyl-1, 4-dihydrocollidine (0.1%). Serum biochemical, histological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic analyses were performed 1, 2, 4, and 7 days after feeding. [Results]All experimental groups showed significantly increased serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase levels. From day 1, bile canalicular abnormalities such as dilatation and meandering and loss of microvilli were observed. After bile canalicular abnormalities had appeared, substantial infiltration of inflammatory cells was observed amongst the necrotic cells and periductal region. After these inflammatory changes, cholangiocytes proliferated in the portal area and formed ductular reactions. Finally, periductal fibrosis appeared. [Conclusion]This study provides novel evidence of the occurrence of bile canalicular abnormalities during the early phase of sclerosing cholangitis

    Pituitary abscess presenting a very rapid progression: report of a fatal case.

    Pituitary abscess is a rare disease presenting with nonspecific clinical symptoms, and diagnosis is often difficult. This disease is potentially life-threatening, but most cases have a chronic and indolent course. We report a case of a 60-year-old man with a pituitary abscess associated with pituitary adenoma who died 5 days after the onset of clinical symptoms without a definitive diagnosis. Postmortem computed tomography and autopsy findings revealed a sellar mass with cystic change and extension toward the optic chiasm. Histopathology of the lesion demonstrated an abscess with suppurative meningitis and encephalitis. The disturbance of the cardiac autonomic nervous system because of hypothalamus involvement was suggested as the cause of rapid progression and death. This case provides useful information for clinicians to avoid a lethal outcome
