    Structural Transitions and Magnetic Structure in NH4CuCl3 via 14N-NMR

    We report results of 14N-NMR experiments on NH4CuCl3 at the magnetic field of 7 T, where the 1/4-magnetization plateau is observed at low temperatures. The quadrupole splitting parameter νz\nu_{z} splits below 70 K, indicating a structural phase transition. At 4.2 K, eight N sites with distinct values of both νz\nu_{z} and the magnetic hyperfine shift KzK_{z} are resolved in the NMR spectrum for general field directions. We then conlude that the magnetic structure in the 1/4-plateau does not break the symmetry of the crystal. Based on the NMR and the recent neutron scattering results by Ruegg et al. [Phys. Rev.     Sinonasal Schwannoma with New Bone Formation Expressing Bone Morphogenic Protein

    Schwannoma is a benign tumor that arises from the sheath of myelinated nerve fibers and may occur in any part of the body. Osteogenesis in schwannoma is extremely rare and, to date, new bone formation in sinonasal schwannoma has not yet been reported. Here, we describe the first reported case of sinonasal schwannoma with new bone formation. The tumor was successfully treated by endoscopic sinus surgery, and the patient showed no evidence of recurrence 24 months postoperatively. Immunohistochemically, the tumor expressed bone morphogenic protein 4, indicating a possible role of this protein in the new bone formation in schwannomas

    Case Report Bilateral Endoscopic Medial Maxillectomy for Bilateral Inverted Papilloma

    Inverted papilloma (IP) is a benign tumor of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses that is unilateral in most cases. Bilateral IP, involving both sides of the nasal cavity and sinuses, is extremely rare. This paper describes a large IP that filled in both sides of the nasal cavity and sinuses, mimicking association with malignancy. The tumor was successfully treated by bilateral endoscopic medial maxillectomy (EMM). The patient is without evidence of the disease 24 months after surgery. If preoperative diagnosis does not confirm the association with malignancy in IP, endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) should be selected, and ESS, including EMM, is a good first choice of the treatment for IP

    Performance of new Kuraray wavelength-shifting fibers with short decay time

    We measure the decay time and the attenuation length of newly developed wavelength-shifting fibers, YS series from Kuraray, which have fast response. Using a 405 nm laser, the decay times of the YS-2, 4, and 6 are measured to be 3.70±0.043.70 \pm 0.04 ns, 2.06±0.032.06 \pm 0.03 ns, and 1.50±0.021.50 \pm 0.02 ns, respectively. The decay time of Y-11 is measured to be 7.16±0.097.16 \pm 0.09 ns using the same system. All fibers are found to have similar attenuation lengths of more than 4 meters. When combined with the plastic scintillators EJ-200 and EJ-204, the YS series have better time resolution than Y-11, with light yields of 60-100% of Y-11.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    Diffusion tensor imaging in elderly patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus or Parkinson’s disease: diagnosis of gait abnormalities

    BACKGROUND: Gait abnormalities in the elderly, characterized by short steps and frozen gait, can be caused by several diseases, including idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH), and Parkinson’s disease (PD). We analyzed the relationship between these two conditions and their association with gait abnormalities using laboratory test data and findings from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: The study involved 10 patients with INPH, 18 with PD, and 10 healthy individuals (control group). Fractional anisotropy (FA) of five brain areas was measured and compared among the three groups. In addition, the association of INPH and PD with gait capability, frontal lobe function, and FA of each brain area was evaluated. RESULTS: The INPH group had significantly lower FA for anterior thalamic radiation (ATR) and forceps minor (Fmin) as compared to the PD group. The gait capability correlated with ATR FA in the INPH and PD groups. We found that adding DTI to the diagnosis assisted the differential diagnosis of INPH from PD, beyond what could be inferred from ventricular size alone. CONCLUSIONS: We expect that DTI will provide a useful tool to support the differential diagnosis of INPH and PD and their respective severities

    ERO R1 in CL0939+4713 field - Evidence for an S0-like galaxy at z \sim 1.5

    We present further observations of the extremely red object ERO J094258+4659.2, identified by \citet{iye00} as ERO R1 in their deep images of the cluster A851. We estimate its redshift independently by eight-band photometric redshift determination and cross-correlation of a new H-band spectrum with the optical spectra of local E/S0 galaxies, and conclude that it lies at z1.5z \sim 1.5. Although its colors are consistent both with an elliptical galaxy and an S0 galaxy at that redshift, its elongated shape and exponential luminosity profile suggest the presence of an evolved stellar disk component. We rule out the possibility that these properties are strongly influenced by gravitational lensing by the foreground cluster, and therefore conclude that this object is more likely to be an S0-like galaxy, rather than a lensed elliptical. The H-band spectrum does not show strong Hα\alpha emission and the star formation rate therefore appears to be very modest. The presence of such a galaxy with an apparently relaxed disk of stars at this high redshift provides a new and strong constraint on theoretical models which aim to explain the formation and evolution of galaxies.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to the Astrophysical Journa
