Joint Bandwidth Assignment and Routing for Power Saving on Large File Transfer with Time Constraints
The increase in network traffic in recent years has led to increased power consumption. Accordingly, many studies have tried to reduce the energy consumption of network devices. Various types of data have become available in large quantities via large high-speed computer networks. Time-constrained file transfer is receiving much attention as an advanced service. In this model, a request must be completed within a user-specified deadline or rejected if the requested deadline cannot be met. Some bandwidth assignment and routing methods to accept more requests have been proposed. However, these existing methods do not consider energy consumption. Herein, we propose a joint bandwidth assignment and routing method that reduces energy consumption for time-constrained large file transfer. The bandwidth assignment method reduces the power consumption of mediate node, typically router, by waiting for requests and transferring several requests at the same time. The routing method reduces the power consumption by selecting the path with the least predicted energy consumption. Finally, we evaluate the proposed method through simulation experiments

In recent years, the number of requests to transfer large files via large high-speed computer networks has been increasing rapidly. Typically, these requests are handled in the “best effort” manner which results in unpredictable completion times. In this paper, we consider a model where a transfer request either must be completed by a user-specified deadline or must be rejected if its deadline cannot be satisfied. We propose a bandwidth scheduling method and a routing method for reducing the call-blocking probability in a bandwidth-guaranteed network. Finally, we show their excellent performance by simulation experiments

Septins promote dendrite and axon development by negatively regulating microtubule stability via HDAC6-mediated deacetylation
Neurite growth requires two guanine nucleotide-binding protein polymers of tubulins and septins. However, whether and how those cytoskeletal systems are coordinated was unknown. Here we show that the acute knockdown or knockout of the pivotal septin subunit SEPT7 from cerebrocortical neurons impairs their interhemispheric and cerebrospinal axon projections and dendritogenesis in perinatal mice, when the microtubules are severely hyperacetylated. The resulting hyperstabilization and growth retardation of microtubules are demonstrated in vitro. The phenotypic similarity between SEPT7 depletion and the pharmacological inhibition of α-tubulin deacetylase HDAC6 reveals that HDAC6 requires SEPT7 not for its enzymatic activity, but to associate with acetylated α-tubulin. These and other findings indicate that septins provide a physical scaffold for HDAC6 to achieve efficient microtubule deacetylation, thereby negatively regulating microtubule stability to an optimal level for neuritogenesis. Our findings shed light on the mechanisms underlying the HDAC6-mediated coupling of the two ubiquitous cytoskeletal systems during neural development
CSC with and without steroids
We investigated the rates of the use of steroids in Japanese central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) cases and differences in the characteristics of CSC with and without steroids. A total of 538 eyes of 477 patients diagnosed with CSC, with 3 months or more of follow-up between April 2013 and June 2017 at 8 institutions. Patients with CSC with more than 3 months of follow-up were identified by OCT and fluorescein angiography at 8 institutions. Data collected included patient demographics, history of corticosteroid medication and smoking, spherical errors, findings of angiography, subfoveal choroidal thickness, and changes through the follow-up period. Differences in these findings were analyzed in cases with and without corticosteroid treatment. Among the 477 patients (344 men,133 women), 74 (15.5%) (39 men, 35 women) underwent current or prior steroid treatment. Cases with steroids were higher age (p = 0.0403) and showed no male prevalence, more bilateral involvement (p < 0.0001), and the affected eyes had multiple pigment epithelial detachment (p <0.0001), more fluorescein leakage sites (p < 0.0001), greater choroidal thickness (p = 0.0287) and a higher recurrence rate (p = 0.0412). Steroids can cause severer CSC through an effect on choroidal vessels and an impairment of retinal pigment epithelium
Detection and in situ switching of unreversed interfacial antiferromagnetic spins in a perpendicular-exchange-biased system
By using the perpendicular-exchange-biased Pt/Co/α-Cr₂O₃ system, we provide experimental evidence that the unreversed uncompensated Cr spins exist at the Co/α-Cr₂O₃ interface. The unreversed uncompensated Cr spin manifests itself in both the vertical shift of an element-specific magnetization curve and the relative peak intensity of soft-x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectrum. We also demonstrate an in situ switching of the interfacial Cr spins and correspondingly a reversal of the exchange bias without interfacial atomic diffusion. Such switching shows the direct relationship between the interfacial antiferromagnetic spins and origin of the exchange bias. The demonstrated switching of exchange bias would likely offer a new design of advanced spintronics devices, using the perpendicular-exchange-biased system, with low power consumption and ultrafast operation.Y.Shiratsuchi, H.Noutomi, H.Oikawa, et al.
