Integration of UAS in the civil airworthiness regulatory system: present and future
The last years are witnessing a number of initiatives worldwide devoted to assess the safety levels of the unmanned aircraft. These initiatives are very heterogeneous; some of them are centred in airworthiness aspects while others focus on operations. From the point of view of a potential UAS manufacturer the actual situation is plenty of uncertainties in relation to the regulations to be applied for certifying the design, manufacturing and maintenance, and from the point of view of the potential operator the situation is analogous with respect to operational procedures. In the present work the emphasis is on the manufacturerâs situation. The objective of this work is to clarify the present civil airworthiness regulatory scene by summarizing all the regulatory efforts up to date and preparing a comparative analysis of them. In this comparison, the manned regulations are included too. The most representative state-of-the-art UAS are analyzed from the point of view of the existing and the future regulatory framework. The main aspects to be considered are related to the airworthiness certification (performances, structural design, etc) for which a quantitative comparison is established in order to clarify how the new regulatory framework, mainly based on the conventional aircraft certification codes, will affect future UAS, compared to the existing regulation
Modelling the exposure to Cronobacter sakazakii by consumption of a cocoa-milk-based beverage processed by pulsed electric fields

cocoa-milk-based beverages (CCX-M) treated with high-intensity pulsed
electric fields (PEF) was evaluated. Monte Carlo simulation enabled the prediction
of the variability in C. sakazakii load in beverages at the time of consumption to be
estimated. Different scenarios (initial contamination levels; PEF treatment conditions;
and time-temperature combinations of CCX-M beverages storage after treatment) were
simulated. Cocoa addition and PEF treatment resulted in the most influential input
factors to control bacterial final load. Cronobacter spp. exposure risk was reduced by
a maximum of 100 times at 95% of iterations due to addition of cocoa at 5 g/100 mL,
corresponding to scenario 3 (PEF: 15 kV/cmâ3,000 ÎŒs; storage 120 h at 8 °C). Moreover,
the probability of illness for a healthy population was reduced from 2.15 Ă 10-8,
in the baseline scenario, to 4.78 Ă 10-10 due to cocoa addition and application of
15 kV/cmâ3,000 ÎŒs PEF treatment.BISOSTAD projec
Transient lateral photovoltaic effect in patterned metal-oxide-semiconductor films
The time dependent transient lateral photovoltaic effect has been studied
with us time resolution and with chopping frequencies in the kHz range, in
lithographically patterned 21 nm thick, 5, 10 and 20 um wide and 1500 um long
Co lines grown over naturally passivated p-type Si (100). We have observed a
nearly linear dependence of the transitorial response with the laser spot
position. A transitorial response with a sign change in the laser-off stage has
been corroborated by numerical simulations. A qualitative explanation suggests
a modification of the drift-diffusion model by including the in uence of a
local inductance. Our findings indicate that the microstructuring of position
sensitive detectors could improve their space-time resolution.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
A sustainable approach for tungsten carbide synthesis using renewable biopolymers
Here we present a sustainable, environment-friendly and energy-efficient approach for synthesis of porous tungsten carbide (WC). A biopolymer-metal oxide composite featuring iota-carrageenan, chitin and tungsten trioxide (WO3) was used as the precursor material. The reaction mechanism for the synthesis of WC was estimated using the results from X-ray diffraction characterization (XRD). A synthesis temperature of 1300 °C and dwell time of 3 h were found to be the optimum process parameters to obtain WC\u3e98% pure. The grain size, porosity and BrunauerâEmmettâTeller (BET) surface area of the synthesized WC were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. A mesoporous WC was synthesized here with a grain size around 20 nm and BET surface area of 67.03 m2/g. Gel casting was used to demonstrate the manufacturing capability of the proposed precursor material. The WC obtained after heat treatment preserved the original shape albeit significant shrinkage. The WC synthesized here has potential applications in high temperature filters, catalysis, fuel cells and batteries
Synthesis of Tungsten Carbide from Bacterial Cellulose
Here we present preliminary experiments for the synthesis of carbide material using bacterial cellulose as carbon source. We used bacteria cellulose available as Nata de Coco and infiltrated it with tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanoparticles. This composite was heat treated at 1300 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. The XRD pattern confirms the synthesis of tungsten carbide (WC) in the carbonaceous material, though a significant amount of metallic tungsten remained unreacted. SEM images shows that WC particles are present only at the surface of the carbon, which may be a consequence of improper infiltration or collapse of carbon matrix during heat treatment
