Lightweight multiple output converter development
A high frequency, multiple output power conditioner was developed and breadboarded using an eight-stage capacitor diode voltage multiplier to provide +1200 Vdc, and a three-stage for -350 Vdc. In addition, two rectifier bridges were capacitively coupled to the eight-stage multiplier to obtain 0.5 and 0.65 a dc constant current outputs referenced to +1200 Vdc. Total power was 120 watts, with an overall efficiency of 85 percent at the 80 kHz operating frequency. All outputs were regulated to three percent or better, with complete short circuit protection. The power conditioner component weight and efficiency were compared to the equivalent four outputs of the 10 kHz conditioner for the 8 cm ion engine. Weight reduction for the four outputs was 557 grams; extrapolated in the same ratio to all nine outputs, it would be 1100 to 1400 grams
Quenched Hadron Spectrum and Decay Constants on the lattice
In this talk we present the results obtained from a study of
(quenched) lattice configurations from the APE collaboration, at
, using both the Wilson and the SW-Clover fermion action.
We determine the light hadronic spectrum and the meson decay constants. For the
light-light systems we find an agreement with the experimental data of for mesonic masses and for baryonic masses and pseudoscalar
decay constants; a larger deviation is present for the vector decay constants.
For the heavy-light decay constants we find , in good agreement with previous estimates.Comment: 8 pages, latex, Talk given at XXV ITEP Winter School of Physics,

Relaxation times of kinetically constrained spin models with glassy dynamics
We analyze the density and size dependence of the relaxation time for
kinetically constrained spin systems. These have been proposed as models for
strong or fragile glasses and for systems undergoing jamming transitions. For
the one (FA1f) or two (FA2f) spin facilitated Fredrickson-Andersen model at any
density and for the Knight model below the critical density at which
the glass transition occurs, we show that the persistence and the spin-spin
time auto-correlation functions decay exponentially. This excludes the
stretched exponential relaxation which was derived by numerical simulations.
For FA2f in , we also prove a super-Arrhenius scaling of the form
. For FA1f in = we
rigorously prove the power law scalings recently derived in \cite{JMS} while in
we obtain upper and lower bounds consistent with findings therein.
Our results are based on a novel multi-scale approach which allows to analyze
in presence of kinetic constraints and to connect time-scales and
dynamical heterogeneities. The techniques are flexible enough to allow a
variety of constraints and can also be applied to conservative stochastic
lattice gases in presence of kinetic constraints.Comment: 4 page
Polarized and Unpolarized Nucleon Structure Functions from Lattice QCD
We report on a high statistics quenched lattice QCD calculation of the
deep-inelastic structure functions , , and of the proton
and neutron. The theoretical basis for the calculation is the operator product
expansion. We consider the moments of the leading twist operators up to spin
four. Using Wilson fermions the calculation is done for three values of
, and we perform the extrapolation to the chiral limit. The
renormalization constants, which lead us from lattice to continuum operators,
are calculated in perturbation theory to one loop order.Comment: 17 pages, uuencoded postscript file. Renormalization constant of

Robust polarization-based quantum key distribution over collective-noise channel
We present two polarization-based protocols for quantum key distribution. The
protocols encode key bits in noiseless subspaces or subsystems, and so can
function over a quantum channel subjected to an arbitrary degree of collective
noise, as occurs, for instance, due to rotation of polarizations in an optical
fiber. These protocols can be implemented using only entangled photon-pair
sources, single-photon rotations, and single-photon detectors. Thus, our
proposals offer practical and realistic alternatives to existing schemes for
quantum key distribution over optical fibers without resorting to
interferometry or two-way quantum communication, thereby circumventing,
respectively, the need for high precision timing and the threat of Trojan horse
attacks.Comment: Minor changes, added reference
Constraining Modified Gravity with Euclid
Future proposed satellite missions as Euclid can offer the opportunity to
test general relativity on cosmic scales through mapping of the galaxy weak
lensing signal. In this paper we forecast the ability of these experiments to
constrain modified gravity scenarios as those predicted by scalar-tensor and
theories. We found that Euclid will improve constraints expected from
the PLANCK satellite on these modified gravity models by two orders of
magnitude. We discuss parameter degeneracies and the possible biases introduced
by modified gravity
Extended performance solar electric propulsion thrust system study. Volume 4: Thruster technology evaluation
Several thrust system design concepts were evaluated and compared using the specifications of the most advanced 30 cm engineering model thruster as the technology base. Emphasis was placed on relatively high power missions (60 to 100 kW) such as a Halley's comet rendezvous. The extensions in thruster performance required for the Halley's comet mission were defined and alternative thrust system concepts were designed in sufficient detail for comparing mass, efficiency, reliability, structure, and thermal characteristics. Confirmation testing and analysis of thruster and power processing components were performed, and the feasibility of satisfying extended performance requirements was verified. A baseline design was selected from the alternatives considered, and the design analysis and documentation were refined. The baseline thrust system design features modular construction, conventional power processing, and a concentrator solar array concept and is designed to interface with the Space Shuttle
Perturbative analysis of disordered Ising models close to criticality
We consider a two-dimensional Ising model with random i.i.d. nearest-neighbor
ferromagnetic couplings and no external magnetic field. We show that, if the
probability of supercritical couplings is small enough, the system admits a
convergent cluster expansion with probability one. The associated polymers are
defined on a sequence of increasing scales; in particular the convergence of
the above expansion implies the infinite differentiability of the free energy
but not its analyticity. The basic tools in the proof are a general theory of
graded cluster expansions and a stochastic domination of the disorder
Phenomenology with Wilson fermions using smeared sources
We investigate the use of two types of non-local (``smeared'') sources for
quark propagators in quenched lattice QCD at using Wilson fermions
at and . We present results for the hadron mass spectrum,
meson decay constants, quark masses, the chiral condensate and the quark
distribution amplitude of the pion. The use of smeared sources leads to a
considerable improvement over previous results. We find a disturbing
discrepancy between the baryon spectra obtained using Wuppertal and wall
sources. We find good signals in the ratio of correlators used to calculate the
quark mass and the chiral condensate and show that the extrapolation to the
chiral limit is smooth.Comment: (revised), 57 pages (29 pages of PostScript in landscape mode, 765924
