Ecology of the cyclopoid from the Cochin backwater

    Get PDF
The ecological investigations on the cyclopoid copepods, wherein various trends in the occurrence and seasonal abundance in Cochin Backwater, an estuarine system, have been studied. The material is based on regular weekly zooplankton samples collected from two fixed stations during January, 1970 to Decembsr, 1971. The various trends in the occurrence and abundance of 28 species of plank tonic cyclopoid copepods belonging to 5 genera and 4 families are dealt with. The effect of salinity and temperature on their distribution is also elucidated

Krishi Vigyan Kendras are innovative grassroot level agricultural institutions established during the Fifth Five Year Plan (1973-'78) by Govt, of India through the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, based on the recommendations of National Education Commission (1964- '66). The Kendras aim at providing vocational education in agriculture and allied areas including fisheries, forestry, livestock, home science etc. for increasing agricultural production and thereby achieving integrated development of the rural sector. Farmers including women, school dropouts, unemployed youth, field level extension functionaries etc. are the target groups. KVKs are functioning under ICAR Institutes, Agricultural Universities and non-governmental organizations

Occurrence of Cymbasoma longispinosum (Copepoda: Monstrilloida) from the Indian Seas

    Get PDF
A description of the monstrilloid copepod Cymbasonm longispinosum (Bourne), recorded for the first time from Indian seas, is given here. The specimens obtained in surface plankton tows off Vizhinjam, Kerala show some variations in morphological characters from the specimens described from Mediterranean and North East Atlantic and these are also discussed

Seasonal distribution of cyclopoid copepods of the mud banks off Alleppey, Kerala coast

    Get PDF
To understand the seasonal distribution and abundance of marine cyclopoid copepods of the mud bank at Purakkad - Thottappally region, Allcppey, regular plankton samples were collected from four fixed stations commencing from June, 1971 to June, 1972. Apart from this, 9 samples collected by R. V. VARUNA in the mud bank region was also studied for spatial distribution. A total of 32 species of cyclopoid copepods belonging to 5 genera and 4 families were encountered in the samples. Two peaks were observed for adults as well as copepodites during the period of investigation and this coincides with the rise in temperature and salinity

On the occurrence of the cyclopoid copepod Vettoria parva (Farran) in the Indian Seas

    Get PDF
Vettoria parva (Farran), a cyclopoid copepod is recorded for the first time from the Indian Seas. This is also the first record of the species from the Indian Ocean. The specimens obtained in surface plankton tows off Vizhinjam, Kerala agree in all details with the description of the type given by Farran (1936) from the Great Barrier Reef, except for the absence of lenticular swellings on either side of cephalosome
