    Functional assessment for acute stroke trials: properties, analysis, and application

    A measure of treatment effect is needed to assess the utility of any novel intervention in acute stroke. For a potentially disabling condition such as stroke, outcomes of interest should include some measure of functional recovery. There are many functional outcome assessments that can be used after stroke. In this narrative review, we discuss exemplars of assessments that describe impairment, activity, participation, and quality of life. We will consider the psychometric properties of assessment scales in the context of stroke trials, focusing on validity, reliability, responsiveness, and feasibility. We will consider approaches to the analysis of functional outcome measures, including novel statistical approaches. Finally, we will discuss how advances in audiovisual and information technology could further improve outcome assessment in trials

    High accuracy transfer printing of single-mode membrane silicon photonic devices

    A transfer printing (TP) method is presented for the micro-assembly of integrated photonic devices from suspended membrane components. Ultra thin membranes with thickness of 150nm are directly printed without the use of mechanical support and adhesion layers. By using a correlation alignment scheme vertical integration of single-mode silicon waveguides is achieved with an average placement accuracy of 100±70nm. Silicon (Si) μ-ring resonators are also fabricated and show controllable optical coupling by varying the lateral absolute position to an underlying Si bus waveguide

    Illumination of a scene with a time-sequence of spatial light patterns enables clients within the scene to navigate, receive broadcast wireless data, or make subsequent space-division multiple access connections to a high bandwidth wireless system. We have developed dedicated binary pattern sequences, for use with arrays of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are projected on the area of interest. The LED arrays can be in either active-matrix or matrix-addressable format. The properties of the different sequences are compared theoretically and experimentally, highlighting a trade-off between position update rate and resilience against pixel cross-talk and interference

    GaN directional couplers for integrated quantum photonics

    Large cross-section GaN waveguides are proposed as a suitable architecture to achieve integrated quantum photonic circuits. Directional couplers with this geometry have been designed with aid of the beam propagation method and fabricated using inductively coupled plasma etching. Scanning electron microscopy inspection shows high quality facets for end coupling and a well defined gap between rib pairs in the coupling region. Optical characterization at 800 nm shows single-mode operation and coupling-length-dependent splitting ratios. Two photon interference of degenerate photon pairs has been observed in the directional coupler by measurement of the Hong-Ou-Mandel dip with 96% visibility.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    An emerging role for stress granules in neurodegenerative disease and hearing loss

    Stress granules (SGs) are membrane-less cytosolic assemblies that form in response to stress (e.g., heat, oxidative stress, hypoxia, viral infection and UV). Composed of mRNA, RNA binding proteins and signalling proteins, SGs minimise stress-related damage and promote cell survival. Recent research has shown that the stress granule response is vital to the cochlea's response to stress. However, emerging evidence suggests stress granule dysfunction plays a key role in the pathophysiology of multiple neurodegenerative diseases, several of which present with hearing loss as a symptom. Hearing loss has been identified as the largest potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia. The underlying reason for the link between hearing loss and dementia remains to be established. However, several possible mechanisms have been proposed including a common pathological mechanism. Here we will review the role of SGs in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases and explore possible links and emerging evidence that they may play an important role in maintenance of hearing and may be a common mechanism underlying age-related hearing loss and dementia

    NLO distributions for Higgs production at the LHC

    We report on results for the NLO corrected differential distributions dσ/dpTd\sigma/dp_T and dσ/dyd\sigma/dy for the process p+p→H+′X′p + p\to H + 'X', where pTp_T and yy are the transverse momentum and rapidity of the Higgs-boson HH respectively and XX denotes the inclusive hadronic state. All QCD partonic subprocesses have been included. The computation is carried out in the limit that the top-quark mass mt→∞m_t \to \infty. Our calculations reveal that the dominant subprocess is given by g+g→H+′X′g + g \to H + 'X' but the reaction g+q(qˉ)→H+′X′g + q(\bar q) \to H + 'X' is not negligible. Also the KK-factor representing the ratio between the next-to-leading order and leading order differential distributions varies from 1.4 to 1.7 depending on the kinematic region and choice of parton densities.Comment: 4 pages, Latex, 4 postscript figures, Contribution to Radcor0
