Paneling techniques for use with the VORLAX computer program
A method is presented for determining the geometric input data required by the VORLAX computer program in order to accurately model an aircraft configuration. Techniques are described for modeling each of the major components of a configuration and for joining these individual components into a complete configuration. The effects of trailing vortex filaments and methods of avoiding their intersection with downstream panels are also discussed. The methods presented here are applicable to most conventional aircraft configurations

Top squark-mediated annihilation of bino-like neutralinos to top-antitop
pairs can play the dominant role in obtaining a thermal relic dark matter
abundance in agreement with observations. In a previous paper, it was argued
that this can occur naturally in models of compressed supersymmetry, which
feature a running gluino mass parameter that is substantially smaller than the
wino mass parameter at the scale of apparent gauge coupling unification. Here I
study in some more detail the parameter space in which this is viable, and
compare to other scenarios for obtaining the observed dark matter density. I
then study the possibility of detecting the dark matter directly in future
experiments. The prospects are consistently very promising for a wide variety

Data inversion algorithm development for the hologen occultation experiment
The successful retrieval of atmospheric parameters from radiometric measurement requires not only the ability to do ideal radiometric calculations, but also a detailed understanding of instrument characteristics. Therefore a considerable amount of time was spent in instrument characterization in the form of test data analysis and mathematical formulation. Analyses of solar-to-reference interference (electrical cross-talk), detector nonuniformity, instrument balance error, electronic filter time-constants and noise character were conducted. A second area of effort was the development of techniques for the ideal radiometric calculations required for the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) data reduction. The computer code for these calculations must be extremely complex and fast. A scheme for meeting these requirements was defined and the algorithms needed form implementation are currently under development. A third area of work included consulting on the implementation of the Emissivity Growth Approximation (EGA) method of absorption calculation into a HALOE broadband radiometer channel retrieval algorithm

Aerodynamic design and analysis of the AST-204, AST-205, and AST-206 blended wing-fuse large supersonic transport configuration concepts
The aerodynamic design and analysis of three blended wing-fuselage supersonic cruise configurations providing four, five, and six abreast seating was conducted using a previously designed supersonic cruise configuration as the baseline. The five abreast configuration was optimized for wave drag at a Mach number of 2.7. The four and six abreast configurations were also optimized at Mach 2.7, but with the added constraint that the majority of their structure be common with the five abreast configuration. Analysis of the three configurations indicated an improvement of 6.0, 7.5, and 7.7 percent in cruise lift-to-drag ratio over the baseline configuration for the four, five, and six abreast configurations, respectively
Expanded study of feasibility of measuring in-flight 747/JT9D loads, performance, clearance, and thermal data
The JT9D jet engine exhibits a TSFC loss of about 1 percent in the initial 50 flight cycles of a new engine. These early losses are caused by seal-wear induced opening of running clearances in the engine gas path. The causes of this seal wear have been identified as flight induced loads which deflect the engine cases and rotors, causing the rotating blades to rub against the seal surfaces, producing permanent clearance changes. The real level of flight loads encountered during airplane acceptance testing and revenue service and the engine's response in the dynamic flight environment were investigated. The feasibility of direct measurement of these flight loads and their effects by concurrent measurement of 747/JT9D propulsion system aerodynamic and inertia loads and the critical engine clearance and performance changes during 747 flight and ground operations was evaluated. A number of technical options were examined in relation to the total estimated program cost to facilitate selection of the most cost effective option. It is concluded that a flight test program meeting the overall objective of determining the levels of aerodynamic and inertia load levels to which the engine is exposed during the initial flight acceptance test and normal flight maneuvers is feasible and desirable.
