Orbital ordering promotes weakly-interacting S=1/2 dimers in the triangular lattice compound Sr3Cr2O8

The weakly interacting S=1/2 dimers system Sr3Cr2O8 has been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. Our data reveal a structural phase transition below room temperature corresponding to an antiferro-orbital ordering with nearly 90 degrees arrangement of the occupied 3z^2-r^2 d-orbital. This configuration leads to a drastic reduction of the inter-dimer exchange energies with respect to the high temperature orbital-disorder state, as shown by a spin-dimer analysis of the super-superexchange interactions performed using the Extended Huckel Tight Binding method. Inelastic neutron scattering reveals the presence of a quasi non-dispersive magnetic excitation at 5.4 meV, in agreement with the picture of weakly-interacting dimers

A potential library for primary MFL pedagogy: the case of Young Pathfinders

As readers of this journal will know very well, 2010 will see all KS2 (ages 7-11) pupils in England entitled to learn a modern foreign language in normal curriculum time. This development of the commitment to primary language learning should provide an excellent opportunity and experience for pupils, whilst at the same time requiring some radical changes for many teachers, schools and much of the wider language learning community. Recent research has indicated general trends suggesting an increase in primary languages already, in anticipation of this development and even beforehand. One of the most recent studies indicates that 43% of primary children currently learn a foreign language at KS2, either in class or as an extra-curricular activity, although the extent of this learning varies considerably (Driscoll, Jones and Macrory, 2004). It has also been suggested (Muijs et al, 2005) that there are certain aspects of the process that will be particularly demanding if the challenge of providing this entitlement are to be met

Properties of iterative Monte Carlo single histogram reweighting

We present iterative Monte Carlo algorithm for which the temperature variable is attracted by a critical point. The algorithm combines techniques of single histogram reweighting and linear filtering. The 2d Ising model of ferromagnet is studied numerically as an illustration. In that case, the iterations uncovered stationary regime with invariant probability distribution function of temperature which is peaked nearly the pseudocritical temperature of specific heat. The sequence of generated temperatures is analyzed in terms of stochastic autoregressive model. The error of histogram reweighting can be better understood within the suggested model. The presented model yields a simple relation, connecting variance of pseudocritical temperature and parameter of linear filtering.Comment: 3 figure

Ionized Gas Motions and the Structure of Feedback Near a Forming Globular Cluster in NGC 5253

We observed Brackett α\alpha 4.05μ\mum emission towards the supernebula in NGC 5253 with NIRSPEC on Keck II in adaptive optics mode, NIRSPAO, to probe feedback from its exciting embedded super star cluster (SSC). NIRSPEC's Slit-Viewing Camera was simultaneously used to image the K-band continuum at \sim0.10.1'' resolution. We register the IR continuum with HST imaging, and find that the visible clusters are offset from the K-band peak, which coincides with the Br α\alpha peak of the supernebula and its associated molecular cloud. The spectra of the supernebula exhibit Br α\alpha emission with a strong, narrow core. The linewidths are 65-76 km s1^{-1}, FWHM, comparable to those around individual ultra-compact HII regions within our Galaxy. A weak, broad (FWHM\simeq150-175 km s1^{-1}) component is detected on the base of the line, which could trace a population of sources with high-velocity winds. The core velocity of Br α\alpha emission shifts by +13 km s1^{-1} from NE to SW across the supernebula, possibly indicating a bipolar outflow from an embedded object, or linked to a foreground redshifted gas filament. The results can be explained if the supernebula comprises thousands of ionized wind regions around individual massive stars, stalled in their expansion due to critical radiative cooling and unable to merge to drive a coherent cluster wind. Based on the absence of an outflow with large mass loss, we conclude that feedback is currently ineffective at dispersing gas, and the SSC retains enriched material out of which it may continue to form stars.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

Observation of ferromagnetic resonance in strontium ruthenate (SrRuO3)

We report the observation of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in SrRuO3 using the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. The FMR oscillations in the time-domain appear in response to a sudden, optically induced change in the direction of easy-axis anistropy. The high FMR frequency, 250 GHz, and large Gilbert damping parameter, alpha ~ 1, are consistent with strong spin-orbit coupling. We find that the parameters associated with the magnetization dynamics, including alpha, have a non-monotonic temperature dependence, suggestive of a link to the anomalous Hall effect.Comment: submitted to Phys. Bethe Ansatz solutions for Temperley-Lieb Quantum Spin Chains

We solve the spectrum of quantum spin chains based on representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebra associated with the quantum groups Uq(Xn){\cal U}% _{q}(X_{n}) for Xn=A1,X_{n}=A_{1}, Bn,B_{n}, CnC_{n} and DnD_{n}. The tool is a modified version of the coordinate Bethe Ansatz through a suitable choice of the Bethe states which give to all models the same status relative to their diagonalization. All these models have equivalent spectra up to degeneracies and the spectra of the lower dimensional representations are contained in the higher-dimensional ones. Periodic boundary conditions, free boundary conditions and closed non-local boundary conditions are considered. Periodic boundary conditions, unlike free boundary conditions, break quantum group invariance. For closed non-local cases the models are quantum group invariant as well as periodic in a certain sense.Comment: 28 pages, plain LaTex, no figures, to appear in Int. J. Mod. Phys.

Algebras in Higher Dimensional Statistical Mechanics - the Exceptional Partition (MEAN Field) Algebras

We determine the structure of the partition algebra Pn(Q)P_n(Q) (a generalized Temperley-Lieb algebra) for specific values of Q \in \C, focusing on the quotient which gives rise to the partition function of nn site QQ-state Potts models (in the continuous QQ formulation) in arbitrarily high lattice dimensions (the mean field case). The algebra is non-semi-simple iff QQ is a non-negative integer less than nn. We determine the dimension of the key irreducible representation in every specialization.Comment: 4 page
