    Multidomain switching in the ferroelectric nanodots

    Controlling the polarization switching in the ferroelectric nanocrystals, nanowires and nanodots has an inherent specificity related to the emergence of depolarization field that is associated with the spontaneous polarization. This field splits the finite-size ferroelectric sample into polarization domains. Here, based on 3D numerical simulations, we study the formation of 180∘^{\circ } polarization domains in a nanoplatelet, made of uniaxial ferroelectric material, and show that in addition to the polarized monodomain state, the multidomain structures, notably of stripe and cylindrical shapes, can arise and compete during the switching process. The multibit switching protocol between these configurations may be realized by temperature and field variations

    The "carrying angle" is defined as the angle formed by the long axis of the humerus and the long axis of the ulna(1.2J. This angle was measured in-vitro by several methodsl1j but few authors accomplished this measurements in vivo [2J probably due to the difficulties related to the identification of repere points. The goal of this work was to define an easy, fast and accurate new method for evaluation of the carrying angle in an in-vivo set up usable in rehabilitation and sport fields.     The Mn site in Mn-doped Ga-As nanowires: an EXAFS study

    We present an EXAFS study of the Mn atomic environment in Mn-doped GaAs nanowires. Mn doping has been obtained either via the diffusion of the Mn used as seed for the nanowire growth or by providing Mn during the growth of Au-induced wires. As a general finding, we observe that Mn forms chemical bonds with As but is not incorporated in a substitutional site. In Mn-induced GaAs wires, Mn is mostly found bonded to As in a rather disordered environment and with a stretched bond length, reminiscent of that exhibited by MnAs phases. In Au-seeded nanowires, along with stretched Mn-As coordination we have found the presence of Mn in a Mn-Au intermetallic compound.Comment: This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in Semiconductor Science and Technology.     Knowledge and perspectives on the welfare of italian heavy pigs on farms

    This review aims to give an overview of the most significant available information on welfare issues of Italian heavy pigs on farms. These animals, whose meat is used to produce typical products, are characterized by much higher body weights and age at slaughter (approximately 160\u2013170 kg, and 9 months of age) than most pigs reared in Europe, resulting in peculiar behavioral and rearing-related needs. To highlight the main findings and the areas in which additional research is needed, the paper was organized by allocating the studies on the basis of the Welfare Quality four principles framework, i.e., good feeding, good housing, good health, and appropriate behavior. The results indicate the possibility of improvement with regard to the management of feeding, watering, and some environmental parameters (light, thermal comfort, enrichments) and a lack of knowledge on the actual space requirements (and a corresponding regulatory gap). Moreover, deficiencies concerning the prevalence of injuries and disease and the relationship between lesions observed post-mortem and rearing conditions needs to be addressed. Lastly, the absence of research concerning the evaluation of the emotional state of animals has been highlighted. It is hoped that these findings will, in the future, serve as a basis for the development of specific policies for these animals in order to increase the ethical value of the entire production chain, in accordance with consumers\u2019 demand and expectation for high animal welfare standards

    Sea Tide Influence on Ice Flow of David Drygalski’s Ice Tongue Inferred from Geodetic GNSS Observations and SAR Offset Tracking Analysis

    David Glacier and Drygalski Ice Tongue are massive glaciers in Victoria Land, Antarctica. The ice from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet is drained through the former, and then discharged into the western Ross Sea through the latter. David Drygalski is the largest outlet glacier in Northern Victoria Land, floating kilometers out to sea. The floating and grounded part of the David Glacier are the main focus of this article. During the XXI Italian Antarctic Expedition (2005-2006), within the framework of the National Antarctic Research Programme (PNRA), two GNSS stations were installed at different points: the first close to the grounding line of David Glacier, and the second approximately 40 km downstream of the first one. Simultaneous data logging was performed by both GNSS stations for 24 days. In the latest data processing, the kinematic PPP technique was adopted to evaluate the dominant diurnal components and the very small semi-diurnal variations in ice motion induced by the ocean tide and the mean ice flow rates of both GNSS stations. Comparison of the GNSS time series with predicted ocean tide calculated from harmonic coefficients of the nearest tide gauge stations, installed at Cape Roberts and Mario Zucchelli Station, highlight different local response of the glacier to ocean tide, with a minor amplitude of vertical motion at a point partially anchored at the bedrock close to the grounding line. During low tide, the velocity of the ice flow reaches its daily maximum, in accordance with the direction of seawater outflow from the fjord into the ocean, while the greatest daily tidal excursion generates an increase in the horizontal ice flow velocity. With the aim to extend the analysis in spatial terms, five COSMO-SkyMED Stripmap scenes were processed. The comparison of the co-registered offset tracking rates, obtained from SAR images, with the GNSS estimation shows good agreement

    Deregulated PTEN/PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling in prostate cancer: Still a potential druggable target?

    Although the prognosis of patients with localized prostate cancer is good after surgery, with a favorable response to androgen deprivation therapy, about one third of them invariably relapse, and progress to castration-resistant prostate cancer. Overall, prostate cancer therapies remain scarcely effective, thus it is mandatory to devise alternative treatments enhancing the efficacy of surgical castration and hormone administration. Dysregulation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase pathway has attracted growing attention in prostate cancer due to the highly frequent association of epigenetic and post-translational modifications as well as to genetic alterations of both phosphoinositide 3-kinase and PTEN to onset and/or progression of this malignancy, and to resistance to canonical androgen-deprivation therapy. Here we provide a summary of the biological functions of the major players of this cascade and their deregulation in prostate cancer, summarizing the results of preclinical and clinical studies with PI3K signaling inhibitors and the reasons of failure independent from genomic changes

    ISPRED-SEQ: Deep Neural Networks and Embeddings for Predicting Interaction Sites in Protein Sequences

    The knowledge of protein–protein interaction sites (PPIs) is crucial for protein functional annotation. Here we address the problem focusing on the prediction of putative PPIs considering as input protein sequences. The issue is important given the huge volume of protein sequences compared to experimental and/or computed structures. Taking advantage of protein language models, recently developed, and Deep Neural networks, here we describe ISPRED-SEQ, which overpasses state-of-the-art predictors addressing the same problem.     DeepREx-WS: A web server for characterising protein–solvent interaction starting from sequence

    Protein–solvent interaction provides important features for protein surface engineering when the structure is absent or partially solved. Presently, we can integrate the notion of solvent exposed/buried residues with that of their flexibility and intrinsic disorder to highlight regions where mutations may increase or decrease protein stability in order to modify proteins for biotechnological reasons, while preserving their functional integrity. Here we describe a web server, which provides the unique possibility of integrating knowledge of solvent and non-solvent exposure with that of residue conservation, flexibility and disorder of a protein sequence, for a better understanding of which regions are relevant for protein integrity. The core of the webserver is DeepREx, a novel deep learning-based tool that classifies each residue in the sequence as buried or exposed. DeepREx is trained on a high-quality, non-redundant dataset derived from the Protein Data Bank comprising 2332 monomeric protein chains and benchmarked on a blind test set including 200 protein sequences unrelated with the training set. Results show that DeepREx performs at the state-of-the-art in the field. In turn, the Web Server, DeepREx-WS, supplements the predictions of DeepREx with features that allow a better characterisation of exposed and buried regions: i) residue conservation derived from multiple sequence alignment; ii) local sequence hydrophobicity; iii) residue flexibility computed with MEDUSA; iv) a predictor of secondary structure; v) the presence of disordered regions as derived from MobiDB-Lite3.0. The web server allows browsing, selecting and intersecting the different features. We demonstrate a possible application of the DeepREx-WS for assisting the identification of residues to be variated in protein surface engineering processes

    Evidence of semantic processing in parafoveal reading: a rapid parallel visual presentation (Rpvp) study

    This study explores whether semantic processing in parafoveal reading in the Italian language is modulated by the perceptual and lexical features of stimuli by analyzing the results of the rapid parallel visual presentation (RPVP) paradigm experiment, which simultaneously presented two words, with one in the fovea and one in the parafovea. The words were randomly sampled from a set of semantically related and semantically unrelated pairs. The accuracy and reaction times in reading the words were measured as a function of the stimulus length and written word frequency. Fewer errors were observed in reading parafoveal words when they were semantically related to the foveal ones, and a larger semantic facilitatory effect was observed when the foveal word was highly frequent and the parafoveal word was short. Analysis of the reaction times suggests that the semantic relation between the two words sped up the naming of the foveal word when both words were short and highly frequent. Altogether, these results add further evidence in favor of the semantic processing of words in the parafovea during reading, modulated by the orthographic and lexical features of the stimuli.
