    Planetary landing: modelling and control of the propulsion descent

    In the propulsive phase, after parachute release, of planetary landing like Mars or Moon, horizontal motion is obtained by tilting the axial thrust, so that it aligns either to the negative velocity vector (gravity turn) or to the requested acceleration vector. The latter strategy is assumed here, as it allows pinpoint landing. As such, tilt angles (pitch and yaw) become proportional to the horizontal acceleration. Instead of designing a hierarchical guidance and control in which horizontal acceleration becomes the attitude control target, a unique control system can be designed based on the fourth order dynamics from angular acceleration to position. The paper shows that the combined dynamics can be (quasi) input-state linearized except the nonlinear factor of the tilt angles (the axial thrust imposed by vertical braking). The paper shows that control design around the reference trajectory (tilt and position) given by the guidance can exploit the quasi linearization, but tracking error stability must be proved in presence of a not stabilizable external disturbance. The paper is restricted to closed-loop control strategies, and their effectiveness is proved through Monte Carlo simulations

    Norovirus is a common cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks associated with consumption of raw shellfish. The majority of norovirus infections world-wide are due to genogroup II noroviruses. Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) at the end of the commercial chain, the points of purchase, were sampled and screened by an hemi-nested RT-PCR specific for genogroup II noroviruses. Noroviral RNA was detected in 10% of the samples, with the lower frequency being observed in samples obtained from hypermarkets (8%) rather than in samples from open-air markets and fish shops (16% and 12%, respectively), suggesting more efficient systems of purification and control being enacted by shellfish producers and suppliers of large retail chains. By sequence analysis, the strains were characterized as norovirus variant GII.b/Hilversum

    Behavioral disturbances in dementia and beyond: Time for a new conceptual frame?

    Alzheimer\u2019s disease and vascular dementia are estimated to be the most common causes of dementia, although mixed dementia could represent the most prevalent form of dementia in older adults aged more than 80 years. Behavioral disturbances are common in the natural history of dementia. However, so far, there is a paucity of studies that investigated the causal association between behavioral psychological symptoms of dementia and dementia sub-types, due to the high heterogeneity of methodology, study design and type of clinical assessment. To understand the scant evidence on such a relevant clinical issue, it could be hypothesized that a new shifting paradigm could result in a better identification of the relationship between behavioral disturbances and dementia. This narrative review provides an update of evidence on the behavioral patterns associated with different dementia sub-types and offers a potential future perspective as common ground for the development of new translational studies in the field of behavioral disturbances in dementia and the appropriateness of psychoactive treatments

    Free-form Light Actuators - Fabrication and Control of Actuation in Microscopic Scale

    Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are smart materials capable of reversible shape-change in response to external stimuli, and have attracted researchers' attention in many fields. Most of the studies focused on macroscopic LCE structures (films, fibers) and their miniaturization is still in its infancy. Recently developed lithography techniques, e.g., mask exposure and replica molding, only allow for creating 2D structures on LCE thin films. Direct laser writing (DLW) opens access to truly 3D fabrication in the microscopic scale. However, controlling the actuation topology and dynamics at the same length scale remains a challenge. In this paper we report on a method to control the liquid crystal (LC) molecular alignment in the LCE microstructures of arbitrary three-dimensional shape. This was made possible by a combination of direct laser writing for both the LCE structures as well as for micrograting patterns inducing local LC alignment. Several types of grating patterns were used to introduce different LC alignments, which can be subsequently patterned into the LCE structures. This protocol allows one to obtain LCE microstructures with engineered alignments able to perform multiple opto-mechanical actuation, thus being capable of multiple functionalities. Applications can be foreseen in the fields of tunable photonics, micro-robotics, lab-on-chip technology and others

    Bleeding jejunal varices and portal thrombosis in a splenectomized patient with hereditary spherocytosis

    Bleeding from varices located in the small bowel is a very uncommon finding; nonetheless, such events accompany with a high mortality rate (1– 4). Moreover, early diagnosis of jejunal or ileal varices cannot usually be accomplished with standard diagnostic tools (ie, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy). Most reports in the literature relate to subjects with liver cirrhosis, often with hepatocarcinoma; in unusual anatomical situations, varices may develop beyond the ligament of Treitz in adjunct to the far more common location in the esophageal and gastric wall. Thrombosis of the portal vein is a common feature in such conditions. Portal thrombosis has also been described in association with overt or latent myeloproliferative diseases (5); its occurrence in nonneoplastic hematological conditions in subjects with normal liver function is quite uncommon. This report describes the observation of jejunal varices, with repeated episodes of “melena of unknown origin,” some of which quite severe, as their clinical presentation in a patient with portal thrombosis and with otherwise absolutely normal liver function, who had undergone splenectomy for hereditary spherocytosis in early adolescence

Moreover, antibodies for human hepatitis E have been detected consistently at various prevalence rates in cats. Although the correlation between these viruses and the liver injury in cats must be clarified, hepatotropic viruses might represent an increasing risk for feline and public health

    100+ Gbps/λ 50 km C-Band Downstream PON Using CD Digital Pre-Compensation and Direct-Detection ONU Receiver

    We experimentally demonstrate a single-wavelength 100 Gbps downstream PON transmission aided by chromatic dispersion digital pre-compensation (CD-DPC) using simple digital signal processing (DSP) finite impulse response (FIR) filters in combination with an IQ Mach-Zehnder modulator (IQ-MZM) at the transmitter side and direct-detection receiver at the optical network unit (ONU). A reach of 50 km over standard single-mode fiber in C-band and an optical distribution network (ODN) loss of 28.5 dB are achieved. Transmission of 50 and 125 Gbps over 50 km of fiber is also tested, achieving 32 dB and 24 dB of ODN loss, respectively. The complexity of the filters, the optimization of the main design parameters, and the tolerance of the CD-DPC to the uncertainty of the exact accumulated link dispersion are analyzed in detail

    An improved fault mitigation strategy for CUDA Fermi GPUs

    High computation is a predominant requirement in many applications. In this field, Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) are more and more adopted. Low prices and high parallelism let GPUs be attractive, even in safety critical applications. Nonetheless, new methodologies must be studied and developed to increase the dependability of GPUs. This paper presents an improved fault mitigation strategy against permanent faults for CUDA Fermi GPUs. The proposed approach exploits the reverse engineering of the block scheduling policy in CUDA Fermi GPUs in order to minimize the fault mitigation timing overhead. The graceful performance degradation achieved by the proposed technique outperforms multithreaded CPU implementations and other fault mitigation strategies for CUDA GPU, even in presence of multiple permanent faults

Thanks to a coherent interferometric approach, structural monitoring of buildings can be achieved in deployed passive optical networks based on fiber-to-the-home structure.
