    The paper reports on 3800 small mammals taken in taiga and tundra east of the Mackenzie River Delta between 1971 and 1974. Local distributions are given for all 100 species of small mammals recorded in the region, plus two accidentals. In addition, abundance, body and cranial measurements, and reproductive information is presented for the 8 species collected during the study. The taxonomic status of Clethrionomys rutilus platycephalus is discussed

    CN Bimodality at Low Metallicity: The Globular Cluster M53

    We present low resolution UV-blue spectroscopic observations of red giant stars in the globular cluster M53 ([Fe/H]=-1.84), obtained to study primordial abundance variations and deep mixing via the CN and CH absorption bands. The metallicity of M53 makes it an attractive target: a bimodal distribution of 3883 angstrom CN bandstrength is common in moderate- and high-metallicity globular clusters ([Fe/H] > -1.6) but unusual in those of lower metallicity ([Fe/H] < -2.0). We find that M53 is an intermediate case, and has a broad but not strongly bimodal distribution of CN bandstrength, with CN and CH bandstrengths anticorrelated in the less-evolved stars. Like many other globular clusters, M53 also exhibits a general decline in CH bandstrength and [C/Fe] abundance with rising luminosity on the red giant branch.Comment: 8 pages including 11 figures and 1 table, accepted by PAS

    Winter ecology of the Porcupine caribou herd, Yukon: Part III, Role of day length in determining activity pattern and estimating percent lying

    Data on the activity pattern, proportion of time spent lying and the length of active and lying periods in winter are presented from a 3 year study on the Porcupine caribou herd. Animals were most active at sunrise and sunset resulting in from one (late fall, early and mid winter) to two (early fall and late winter) to three (spring) intervening lying periods. Mean active/lying cycle length decreased from late fall (298 mm) to early winter (238 min), increased to a peak in mid winter (340 min) then declined in late winter (305 min) and again in spring (240 min). Mean length of the lying period increased throughout the 3 winter months from 56 min m early winter to 114 min in mid winter and 153 min in late winter. The percent of the day animals spent lying decreased from fall to early winter, increased throughout the winter and declined in spring. This pattern was related, in part, to day length and was used to compare percent lying among herds. The relationship is suggested to be a means of comparing quality of winter ranges

    Binary open clusters in the Milky Way: photometric and spectroscopic analysis of NGC 5617 and Trumpler 22

    Using photometry and high resolution spectroscopy we investigate for the first time the physical connection between the open clusters NGC 5617 and Trumpler 22. Based on new CCD photometry we report their spatial proximity and common age of ~70 Myr. Based on high resolution spectra collected using the HERMES and UCLES spectrographs on the Anglo-Australian telescope, we present radial velocities and abundances for Fe, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca and Ni. The measured radial velocities are -38.63 +/-2.25 km/s for NGC 5617 and -38.46 +/-2.08 km/s for Trumpler 22. The mean metallicity of NGC 5617 was found to be [Fe/H] =-0.18 +/-0.02 and for Trumpler 22 was found to be [Fe/H] = -0.17 +/-0.04. The two clusters share similar abundances across the other elements, indicative of a common chemical enrichment history of these clusters. Together with common motions and ages we confirm that NGC 5617 and Trumpler 22 are a primordial binary cluster pair in the Milky Way.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure, accepted by MNRA

    Weighted inequalities and vector-valued CalderĂłn-Zygmund operators on non-homogeneous spaces

    Recently, F. Nazarov, S. Treil and A. Volberg (and independently X. Tolsa) have extended the classical theory of Calderón-Zygmund operators to the context of a "non-homogeneous" space (X, d, µ), where, in particular, the measure µ may be non-doubling. In the present work we study weighted inequalities for these operators. Specifically, for 1 &amp;lt; p &amp;lt; [infinity], we identify sufficient conditions for the weight on one side, which guarantee the existence of another weight in the other side, so that the weighted Lp inequality holds. We deal with this problem by developing a vector-valued theory for Calderón-Zygmund operators on non-homogeneous spaces which is interesting in its own right. For the case of the Cauchy integral operator, which is the most important example, we even prove that the conditions for the weights are also necessary
