    A new sampling system tailored to experimentally-derived mechanical properties of icy analogs for evolved Enceladus surface plume deposits

    Enceladus is unique amongst Ocean Worlds in our Solar System: the contents of its internal ocean are continuously emitted to space by its present-day activity, and some of these materials are redeposited on the surface. This tiny moon of Saturn thus presents an opportunity to directly measure the composition of the ocean and seek evidence for habitability (including past or extant life), either by collecting and analyzing plume particles as previously proposed by Discovery and New Frontiers mission concepts, or via more ambitious mission concepts that involve landing, surface sampling and analysis, and potential deployment of subsurface probes to reach the ocean itself (Hofgartner et al., this meeting). However, the low surface gravity (1% of Earth’s) and extreme cryogenic conditions in the South Pole regions (~ 50 K, away from the Tiger Stripes) raises questions: how to best sample the upper ~ 1 cm of the surface around a lander, made of most freshly deposited plume materials? What are the expected properties of these materials, i.e. how fast does sintering proceed and how strong would these materials be as function of their exposure age? We provide answers to these questions via a two-pronged approach. First, we surveyed experimentally the time evolution of mechanical strength of large samples of ice spherules at several temperatures. A custom sample preparation system has been developed to synthesize ice spheres with a grain size distribution of mean ~ 12 microns. The samples are subsequently held at temperatures of -30, -50, and -80 C, over extended periods of time (up to 9 months at time of writing), and their strength is tested at frequent intervals using cone penetration tests. The data obtained to date suggests that the observed temperature dependence of the strength evolution is commensurate with expectations from vapor diffusion. Second, we developed a new sampling system that enables rapid sampling and transfer of surface materials into receptacles. Those receptacles can then deposit the sampled materials into the inlet of an instrument dedicated to analyzing the chemical composition of these materials and seek tracers of past or extant life.     A key task in exploration rover operations is the selection of a safe vehicle path, mainly based on camera images and corresponding terrain surface classifications. The traverse of sandy terrain classes is usually considered as highly risky in terms of getting stuck. However, alternative routes via regions of rocky and bedrock terrain are very burdensome for the mechanical parts of the locomotion system, in particular for the wheel rims. Therefore, reliable simulation tools shall support operators to make wellfounded tradeoffs including all available path options. In order to make the tools applicable for operations and day by day mission planning, the used simulation tools must have reached an accepted level of validation. In the p aper an overview of the challenges and approaches of such a rover locomotion prediction tool are presented

    Investigating the Martian soil at the InSight landing site

    International audienceThe InSight mission is a geophysical mission aimed at better understanding the structure of Mars and of the other rocky planets of the solar system. To do so, a lander accommodating two cameras, a very sensitive seismometer, and a dynamic self-penetrating heat probe nicknamed the mole were placed on the Mars surface by the Instrument Deployment Arm (IDA). Besides geophysical data (which definitely enriched the existing knowledge on the structure of Mars), the InSight instruments significantly increased the knowledge of the geological and geotechnical characteristics of the surface material at the InSight site. Small strain (elastic) parameters were derived from wave velocity measurements during the hammering sessions between the self-penetrating probe and the seismometer. A detailed observation of the soil profile along a depth of 37 cm was made possible thanks to the photos taken by the cameras, and to a detailed analysis of the mole penetration process. Further information was provided by an intense campaign of scraping and piling conducted by the IDA on the surface sand/dust layer. It was shown that the soil profile was composed of a surface 1 cm thick sand/dust layer, overlaying an around 20 cm thick loose duricrust made up of a cohesive matrix containing some pebbles, located above a 12 cm layer of sand overlaying a gravel/sand deposit. It is believed that the geology and soil mechanics data provided by the InSight mission will help for further robotic exploration of Mars

The Planetary Science Journal, 3(1), (2022): 22, https://doi.org/10.3847/psj/ac4493.Europa is a premier target for advancing both planetary science and astrobiology, as well as for opening a new window into the burgeoning field of comparative oceanography. The potentially habitable subsurface ocean of Europa may harbor life, and the globally young and comparatively thin ice shell of Europa may contain biosignatures that are readily accessible to a surface lander. Europa's icy shell also offers the opportunity to study tectonics and geologic cycles across a range of mechanisms and compositions. Here we detail the goals and mission architecture of the Europa Lander mission concept, as developed from 2015 through 2020. The science was developed by the 2016 Europa Lander Science Definition Team (SDT), and the mission architecture was developed by the preproject engineering team, in close collaboration with the SDT. In 2017 and 2018, the mission concept passed its mission concept review and delta-mission concept review, respectively.
