Wetland restoration and nitrate reduction: the example of the periurban wetland of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country, North Spain)
Changes in land use and agricultural intensification caused wetlands on the quaternary aquifer of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country) to disappear some years ago and nitrate concentration in groundwaters increased very quickly. The Basque Government recently declared the East Sector of this aquifer a Vulnerable Zone according to the 91/676/CEE European Directive. Recently, the wetlands have been restored through the closure of the main drainage ditches, the consequent elevation of the water table and the abondonment of agricultural practices near the wetlands. This is the case of the Zurbano wetland. Restoration has allowed the recovery of its biogeochemical function, which has reduced nitrate concentrations in waters. Nitrate concentrations which exceed 50 mg lâ1 in groundwaters entering into the wetland are less than 10 mg lâ1 at the outlet. Conditions in the wetland are conducive to the loss of nitrates: organic matter rich wetted soils, clay presence allowing a local semiconfined flow and very low hydraulic gradient. Water quality monitoring at several points around the wetland showed the processes involved in nitrate loss, although some aspects still remain unresolved. However, during storm events, the wetland effectively reduces the nitrate concentration entering the Alegria River, the most important river on the quaternary aquifer
Remarks on vector-valued Gagliardo and Poincar Ìe-Sobolev type inequalities with weights
In this paper we review certain extensions of the Gagliardo and Poincar Ìe-Sobolev type inequalities to later explore the possibility of extending them to the vector-valued setting. We restrict ourselves to the most classical case of lq-valued functions, where already some difficulties arise, due to the lack of a vector-valued variant of the truncation method, both on the classical and the fractional case. We think that these difficulties may be overcome in the future, and we pose some conjectures in this direction
Dynamics of a self--gravitating magnetized source
We consider a magnetized degenerate gas of fermions as the matter source of a
homogeneous but anisotropic Bianchi I spacetime with a Kasner--like metric. We
examine the dynamics of this system by means of a qualitative and numerical
study of Einstein-Maxwell field equations which reduce to a non--linear
autonomous system. For all initial conditions and combinations of free
parameters the gas evolves from an initial anisotropic singularity into an
asymptotic state that is completely determined by a stable attractor. Depending
on the initial conditions the anisotropic singularity is of the ``cigar'' or

Organic vs Conventional Suckling Lamb Production: Product Quality and Consumer Acceptance
Samples of suckling lambs (n=40) of two breeds reared under conventional and organic conditions were analysed to asses physico-chemical characteristics, including instrumental texture, and nutritional quality in terms of fatty acid composition. Consumer acceptance was also studied using the home-use test. Results revealed that organic suckling lamb meat is healthier as shown by the lower saturated fatty acid levels, the higher polyunsaturated fatty acid contents and the higher 6/3 ratiko. The organic meat had lower instrumental hardness, received higher scores in all sensory parameters, and had statistically better fat sensation and higher ratings for overall liking. These results lend support to the notion among consumers that organic products are healthier and tastier
Consumer Appreciation of Carcass Quality of Organic vs Conventional Suckling Lamb Production
Carcass characteristics of sucking lambs (n= 40) of two breeds reared under conventional and organic conditions were analysed including objective and subjective parameters for fatness and conformation, meat and fat colour. Consumer acceptance was also studied using the home-use test. Results showed that the characteristics of the carcass of suckling lamb were similar for both types of production systems pointing out that organic production system did not affect fatness or muscle development. However, organic meat was darker (higher L* and a* values) probably related with the higher amount of exercise, although fat was not more yellow. In contrast consumers did not consider organic meat darker and there were not significant differences in appearance related with the similar conformation. These results reflect that consumer perceive organic meat as at least as good as conventional production not only regarding environmental quality but also regarding carcass quality
