Influence of Array Configuration on MIMO Channel Capacity

    Get PDF
The use of multiple antennas at each side of the radio link has demonstrated an increase in terms of data bit rate and spectral efficiency [1]. Due to this, different techniques such as spatial multiplexing and space-frequency-time techniques are being applied to MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) systems. In order to obtain MIMO performances, most of the research studies have evaluated Uniform Linear Arrays (ULAs) for simulations and measurements. However, other considerations can be taken into account with the similar space used for the transmitter or receiver antenna array using different physical configurations. In this work, several antenna array configurations in the transmitter and the receiver have been studied and compared, in terms of MIMO channel capacity, showing that for a limited space, the linear array could be replaced for a rectangular or circular one with similar performances

A hands-on education project: antenna design for inter-CubeSat communications

CubeSat platforms have become a de facto standard for universities willing to initiate space-technology activities with students. These small satellite platforms ease the implementation of hands-on education projects and opening the apertures of new research areas. Moreover, due to the limited volume (a 10 cm cube) and power (1 W), the application of imaginative solutions is mandatory. This leads to new innovation processes in the course of CubeSat projects. In this paper, we present a hands-on education project the aim of which is the specification, design, building and measurement of an antenna for communication between nanosatellites and, in particular, CubeSats. The project lies within the framework of ETSIT-UPM innovative education activities in the area of space technology, where students play a leading role in real engineering projects

Simulador Modular de Carga Útil para Sistemas por Satélite de Última Generación

    Get PDF
The most recent complex payload architectures and new satellite communication technologies have raised the operational margins in link budget. The advanced coding modulation schemes used in Digital Video Broadcasting- Satellite 2 (DVB-S2) standard improves bandwidth efficiency at the expense of an increase in the impairments caused by the nonlinearities effects of power on-board amplification. In addition to this, the interferences produced by multibeam systems are not negligible. To reduce the margin and improve the power efficiency of the payload an accurate characterization of these impairments is needed. The aim of our simulator is to study the effect of the different interferences sources in detail and characterize them by the system end-to-end Carrier to Interference relation (C/I). Modular philosophy allows adding or changing subsystems easily or studying them one by one. Cross-correlation between input and output assessment is the powerful method chosen to evaluate the C/I relation

Uplink (Reverse Link) Capacity of An Air-Ground W-CDMA System

    Get PDF
In this work, the uplink capacity and the interference statistics are given for an W-CDMA 3-D Airto- Ground (AG) cellular like network assuming imperfect power control and finite transmitted power. The free space model of propagation is used to calculate the intercellular interference. The uplink capacity has been studied for different frequencies and scenarios. It has been shown that, the effect of rain is to reduce the uplink capacity and the maximum allowable cell radius. Also it is shown that, the frequency of operation should be lower or equal to 2 GHz. For a frequency of operation of 2 GHz, the cell capacity can reach 70 voice users or 46 data users when the cell radius is 350km. The new contribution of the paper is the study of the effect of the imperfect power control and the finite transmitted power on the uplink capacity of the Air-Ground system for different values of outage
