«The first modern corporate experiment» was defined by what Pierre Louis Léon Harmel (1829-1915) had achieved in his yarn factory in Val des bois in the town of Warmeriville close to Rheims in the French department of Marne. Harmel was a French Catholic entrepreneur very sensitive to the social issues of his time. Harmel, while he was progressively turning away from the paternalism of his father, although he was nicknamed "le Bon Père", moved along the tracks of the social doctrine of the Church and the principles of social Catholicism, inspired in particular by Œuvre des Cercles by Rene La Tour du Pin and Albert de Mun. He decided to turn his factory in a kind of community where the basic principles of Christian justice could merge with the modern aspirations of organized workers. He played a decisive role concerning the opening of the Church to the problems of modern society. Besides he was a close relative of the pope Leon XIII by whom he was very much appreciated, Harmel tried to put in place practical teachings, showing that the teaching of the social Catholicism was alive and real

Ultrasound Measured Flexor Muscle Thickness in the Forearms of Rock Climbers

PURPOSE: To examine differences in the forearms of rock climbers using ultrasound to measure the muscle thickness of the finger flexors. METHODS: A total of 33 participants were recruited, 22 climbers (22.23 years; 68% male) and 11 controls (21.8; 55% male). Climbers provided self-reported ratings of their climbing ability, skill level, and preferred mode of climbing (e.g. sport climbing vs. bouldering). Anthropometric measures, including body fat percentage, were measured in all participants. Ultrasound measurements were taken with the participant lying on their back on a padded table with their dominant hand supinated. Muscle thickness measurements were taken at the forearm where a peak of the forearm flexors was identified on the medial aspect of the forearm after a circumference measurement and small mark was made. The distance from the ulna and radius to the muscle-skin interface was measured, as well as echo intensity surrounding the median nerve using a third party program. RESULTS: Approximately 50% of climbers rated themselves as intermediate , and the other 50% rated themselves as advanced climbers, while 77% of the 22 climbers classified themselves as primarily sport climbers , and 23% classified themselves as boulderers . Body fat percentages were significantly different at 19.14±6.99 and 30.02±7.6 for climbers and controls. Ulnar and radial muscle thickness values were significantly higher in climbers, 4.23±.39and 2.32±.39, respectively, and 3.61±.6 and 1.84±.31 in controls (p \u3c .001). No differences in echo intensity were observed between climbers and non-climbers. DISCUSSION: The findings suggests that there are differences in flexor muscle thickness observed in earlier stages of rock climbing. Echo intensity of the flexor muscles were also measured, however significant variance in results warrants further investigation. Future studies should consider larger samples to better determine differences among muscle thickness and echo intensity across climbing abilities and mode of climbing, thus allowing for more specific training programs to be developed at each phase of training

The Effects of Language Anxiety on Second Language Learners: A Literature Review

In my independent study (LING 491) and under the supervision of Dr. Lee, I wrote a literature review entitled “The Effects of Language Anxiety on Second Language Learners: A Literature Review.” Language anxiety, a feeling of panic stress that uniquely occurs in the context of the second language acquisition process, affects almost every second language learner, especially those in a classroom setting. Although there is a large variety of target languages and language learning contexts among the studies on this topic, evidence of the effects of language anxiety and the affective filter are consistently present. Effectively every aspect of language acquisition is irrefutably affected by these factors. One of these factors, the aforementioned affective filter, even prevents language acquisition from occurring while a second language learner is experiencing language anxiety. These studies provide crucial instructions for efficient pedagogical solutions for second language teachers

The Louisiana Unification Movement Of 1873

The occupation of New Orleans on April 28, 1862 by Federal forces began the period of military occupation which was to last in Louisiana until the spring of 1877. This fifteen-year span can be divided into two distinct periods. The first was the era of Presidential Reconstruction under Lincoln and Johnson (1862-1867)? the second was Congressional Reconstruction under the Radicals (1867-1877). Reconstruction left a heavy mark upon the economy, politics, and people of Louisiana. So disturbed were the businessmen and planters of New Orleans and South Louisiana over the adverse economic conditions in the state that they made a noble effort to unite the permanent residents in a political movement to regain control and raise Louisiana once again to a state of wealth and prominence. This movement aimed at breaking down the racial barriers which at once divided the endemic population and made it possible for outsiders to gain control of the state government. The attempt to regain power peacefully has been termed The Louisiana Unification Movement of 1873. It is the purpose of this thesis to analyze the factors which lead to the formation of the Unification Movement and to suggest reasons for its apparent success and abrupt failure
