A science activity guided by children at pre-school level: from a string to a pendulum
A challenge was made to a preschool
class for an activity about science seeking
to find situations where children use creativity in
the process of science learning at this age level.
No previous suggestion was given about the
method and way of implementing the activity.
The teacher prepared in advance a set of diverse
materials that could be eventually used in due
course of the activity. The teacher would guide
the activity to arrive to the concept of pendulum,
but the way to reach that would be defined by the
children themselves.
The starting point was a simple string: to every
child and the teacher was given a string of equal
length. What could be done with such a string
hanging in a hand was the first exercise.
Immediately children´s imagination and
creativity was shown.
After a while a simple pendulum was under
observation and some functioning problems were
detected and later on debugged by the children,
whose suggestions led the teacher hanging the
pendulum at a door’s lintel. This work was supported by FEDER through the

do ensino básico.
The importance of creativity in education is recognized and is mentioned in the Portuguese
legislation. Thus it is essential to transfer these goals set by the law to the daily life of the school
context and give relevance to creativity in the classroom.
The need and importance of science education that fosters students' creativity is the main
reason that led to this study.
The results of this qualitative study within the European FP7 Project “Creative Little
Scientists” aim to reveal the potential for creativity and the role of Inquiry Based Science Education
in preschool and early primary education.
The fieldwork followed the methodology specified for the Project Creative Little Scientists and
involved the use of observations and interviews with teachers and children, and the use of fieldnotes
and audio recordings.
This dissertation includes two case studies (one for the preschool and another for the
primary school). Each case study contains three narrative episodes, documenting examples where
science intersects with creativity.
This study aims to contribute to children develop their interest and curiosity about the world
around them and foster their creativity
Creativity in early science education: a case study
The importance of creativity in
education is recognized and is mentioned in
Portuguese educational policy documents.
The need and importance of science
education to foster students' creativity was
the main driving point of this study.
This qualitative study aims to reveal the
potential for creativity and the role of Inquiry
Based Science Education in preschool and
early primary education.
The fieldwork was documented by the use of
sequential digital images capturing detailed
interactions; field notes supplemented by
audio recording later transcribed; and an
overall timeline.
This communication presents a set of data
analysis in relation to one case -application
of one hands-on IBSE activity in one
classroom. The case study herein reported
contains different episodes, documenting
examples of mathematics learning through
the lens of creativity
Creative Little Scientists: enabling creativity through Science and Mathematics in preschool and first years of primary education : country report on in-depth field work in Portugal
The Country Report on in-depth field work in Portugal forms part of the Country Reports (Deliverable D4.3) of the EU-funded project Creative Little Scientists and aims at presenting the qualitative analysis of data gathered through field work in schools in Portugal.Comissão Europei
Recommendations to policy makers and stakeholders on creativity and early years science and mathematics. National report on recommendations for policy makers and stakeholders in Portugal
The main aim of this National Report is to provide concrete recommendations to policy makers and stakeholders in Portugal for further practice grounded on the research outcomes of the Creative Little Scientists project about enabling children’s creativity through science and mathematics in preschool and first years of primary education
O caso português no projeto CLS
