An exploration of a contemporary youth spirituality among senior students in three Catholic schools
The theory and practice of Catholic schooling, particularly with respect to religious education, have the purpose of promoting the spiritual and moral development of young people. This includes a special emphasis on acquainting them with the religious traditions and spirituality of the Catholic Church. Because Catholic schooling has always endeavoured to meet the religious and personal needs of students, there has been an ongoing interest in monitoring the spirituality of youth to inform the development and planning of a relevant and effective religious education. Hence, there has long been an interest within the Catholic education sector in research on youth spirituality. A significant volume of research has been conducted on the spirituality of contemporary youth within the last decade. This has included a number of major studies in Australia (Crawford and Rossiter, 2006; Flynn and Mok, 2002; Hughes, 2007; Mason et. al. 2005, 2007) and in North America, Smith & Denton (2004). An Assessment of the Effectiveness of Air Force Risk Management Practices in Program Acquisition Using Survey Instrument Analysis
Air Force acquisition programs invest a large amount of resources to develop and field systems. Many of these resources go to risk management in order to help ensure those programs finish successfully with respect to cost, schedule, and technical performance goals. The question arises as to whether this is a sound investment. Although risk management has been shown to be effective in industry, scant empirical evidence exists for its effectiveness within the Air Force. Correlation and regression analysis of survey data show that a positive relationship does exist between specific risk practices and project success. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that organizational behavior practices may reinforce that positive relationship in addition to the structured risk management steps prescribed by organizations such as the Department of Defense and the Project Management Institute

Bioinorganic Chemistry of Nickel

Following the discovery of the first specific and essential role of nickel in biology in 1975 (the dinuclear active site of the enzyme urease) [1], nickel has become a major player in bioinorganic chemistry, particularly in microorganisms, having impacts on both environmental settings and human pathologies. At least nine classes of enzymes are now known to require nickel in their active sites, including catalysis of redox [(Ni,Fe) hydrogenases, carbon monoxide dehydrogenase, methyl coenzyme M reductase, acetyl coenzyme A synthase, superoxide dismutase] and nonredox (glyoxalase I, acireductone dioxygenase, lactate isomerase, urease) chemistries. In addition, the dark side of nickel has been illuminated in regard to its participation in microbial pathogenesis, cancer, and immune responses. Knowledge gleaned from the investigations of inorganic chemists into the coordination and redox chemistry of this element have boosted the understanding of these biological roles of nickel in each context. In this issue, eleven contributions, including four original research articles and seven critical reviews, will update the reader on the broad spectrum of the role of nickel in biology
Use of XAS for the elucidation of metal structure and function: applications to nickel biochemistry, molecular toxicology, and carcinogenesis.
Nickel has been shown to be an essential trace element involved in the metabolism of several species of bacteria, archea, and plants. In these organisms, nickel is involved in enzymes that catalyze both non-redox (e.g., urease, glyoxalase I) and redox (e.g., hydrogenase, carbon monoxide dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase) reactions, and proteins involved in the transport, storage, metallocenter assembly, and regulation of nickel concentration have evolved. Studies of structure/function relationships in nickel biochemistry reveal that cysteine ligands are used to stabilize the Ni(III/II) redox couple. Certain nickel compounds have also been shown to be potent human carcinogens. A likely target for carcinogenic nickel is nuclear histone proteins. Here we present X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies of a model Ni peptide designed to help characterize the structure of the nickel complexes formed with histones and place them in the context of nickel structure/function relationships, to gain insights into the molecular mechanism of nickel carcinogenesis
One His, two His…the emerging roles of histidine in cellular nickel trafficking.
Biological environments present a complex array of metal-binding ligands. Metal-binding proteins have been the overwhelming focus of study because of their important and well-defined biological roles. Consequently, the presence of functional low molecular weight (LMW) metal-ligand complexes has been overlooked in terms of their roles in metallobiochemistry, particularly within cells. Recent studies in microbial systems have illuminated the different roles of L-histidine in nickel uptake, gene expression, and metalloenzyme maturation. In this focused critical review, these roles are surveyed in the context of the coordination chemistry of Ni(II) ions and the amino acid histidine, and the physico-chemical properties of nickel complexes of histidine. These complexes are fundamentally important to cellular metal homeostasis and further work is needed to fully define their contributions. [Abstract copyright: Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. 2005 Revised Omaha Economic Development Plan: Plan for Northeast Omaha
The 2005 Revised OEDP provides OEDC with current data and analysis to initiate and complete a strategic process to develop an action plan for community and economic development activities and projects.
The 2005 Revised Overall Economic Development Plan (OEDP) prepared by the Center for Public Affairs Research (CPAR) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) for the Omaha Economic Development Corporation (OEDC) replaces the original OEDP first prepared in 1978. While a variety of revisions and updates over the years helped keep the original OEDP relatively current and helpful in development activities, in 2005 OEDC President Alvin Goodwin commissioned CPAR to provide a new basic planning document for the organization. Working with OEDC staff, and using the original OEDP as a framework, faculty and staff from CPAR, with the assistance of UNO graduate students, collected and analyzed data for the 2005 Revised Overall Economic Development Plan. The Revised OEDP retains and updates several of the sections from the original Plan but also adds new sections. Overall economic development plans contain a wealth of information about the demographic, social, and economic characteristics of the geographic area targeted for development by a community development corporation (CDC). CDCs, like the Omaha Economic Development Corporation, engage in many and varied community and economic development projects in its service area, and the overall economic development plan provides needed information to implement these projects. For example, the OEDP helps the community development corporation identify community needs as well as opportunities for business and economic development. Data from the OEDP can also be utilized for marketing and promotional purposes to attract new firms and customers. The OEDP serves as a source of information for formulating broad, long-term organizational goals, as well as specific, short-term development strategies and actions. Finally, the OEDP helps coordinate development activities, plans, and projects among the range of other organizations working in or adjacent to the target area

Consequences of temperature fluctuations in observables measured in high energy collisions
We review the consequences of intrinsic, nonstatistical temperature
fluctuations as seen in observables measured in high energy collisions. We do
this from the point of view of nonextensive statistics and Tsallis
distributions. Particular attention is paid to multiplicity fluctuations as a
first consequence of temperature fluctuations, to the equivalence of
temperature and volume fluctuations, to the generalized thermodynamic
fluctuations relations allowing us to compare fluctuations observed in
different parts of phase space, and to the problem of the relation between
Tsallis entropy and Tsallis distributions. We also discuss the possible
influence of conservation laws on these distributions and provide some examples
