    Moving To A District Balanced Literacy Program: A Change Leadership Plan

    Based upon the requirements of the No Child Left Behind mandate, schools that failed to achieve the Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) designation for two consecutive years were required to implement a comprehensive school reform model. This change plan examined the movement from the comprehensive school reform model Success For All (SFA) to a balanced literacy framework within Harmony District 841. The framework advocated for balanced literacy instruction that supported the integration of authentic reading and writing experiences, application of literacy strategies and skills, implementation of a culturally relevant text, focus on professional development for teachers, and provision for effective instructional tools that support and nurture implementation with fidelity

    Perceptions of Physical Therapy and The Role of Physical Therapists  In Injury Prevention Among Professional Basketball Players: A Qualitative Study

    # Background Injury prevention is critical in competitive professional sports, however, the role of physical therapists in this aspect of healthcare is not fully understood. # Purpose The purpose of this study was to describe professional basketball players' perceptions of physical therapy (PT) and physical therapists' role in injury prevention. # Study Design Qualitative, semi-structured interview # Methods Thirty-five professional basketball players (mean age 23.1 years ± 3.9; 42% female; 72% African American; 90% college graduates) from over 20 teams participated. Athletes participated in semi-structured interviews that focused on injury prevention and utilization of PT services. Two researchers coded the transcripts, organized the findings into general categories, and created major themes. Data saturation was reached when no new information emerged. # Results Over half (62.9%) stated that PT mainly addressed post-injury and return-to-sport rehabilitation. An overwhelming majority of players highlighted the use of an athletic trainer (AT) over physical therapists in injury prevention due to perceived expertise and trust. # Conclusion While PTs are educated in preventive care and acute injury management, professional basketball players viewed their role primarily for return-to-sport rehabilitation. The organizational structure of healthcare in professional basketball may promote closer professional relationships with ATs while limiting those with physical therapists. The result is that elite athletes may miss out on treatment specific to the PT profession. # Level of Evidence Level

    Optimization of acousto-ultrasonic sensor networks using genetic algorithms based on experimental and numerical datasets

    Aircraft structural damage detection is becoming of increased importance. Technologies such as acousto-ultrasonic have been suggested for this application; however, an optimization strategy for sensor network design is required to ensure a high detection probability while minimizing sensor network mass. A methodology for optimizing acousto-ultrasonic transducer placement for adhesive disbond detection on metallic aerospace structures is presented. Experimental data sets were acquired using three-dimensional scanning laser vibrometry enabling in-plane and out-of-plane Lamb wave components to be considered. This approach employs a novel multi-sensor site strategy which is difficult to achieve with physical transducers. Different excitation frequencies and source–damage–sensor paths were considered. A fitness assessment criterion which compared baseline and damaged data sets using cross-correlation coefficients was developed empirically. Efficient sensor network optimization was achieved using a bespoke genetic algorithm for different network sizes with the effectiveness assessed and discussed. A comparable numerical data set was also produced using the local interaction simulation approach and optimized using the same methodology. Comparable results with those of the experimental data set indicated a good agreement. As such, the numerical approach demonstrates that acousto-ultrasonic sensor networks can be optimized using simulation (with some further refinement) during an aircraft design phase, being a useful tool to sensor network designers

    Developing an On-Line Interactive Health Psychology Module.

    On-line teaching material in health psychology was developed which ensured a range of students could access appropriate material for their course and level of study. This material has been developed around the concept of smaller 'content chunks' which can be combined into whole units of learning (topics), and ultimately, a module. On the basis of the underlying philosophy that the medium is part of the message, we considered interactivity to be a key element in engaging the student with the material. Consequently, the key aim of this development was to stimulate and engage students, promoting better involvement with the academic material, and hence better learning. It was hoped that this was achieved through the development of material including linked programmes and supporting material, small Java Scripts and basic email, forms and HTML additions.
