Sorting based on urban heritage and income:Evidence from the Amsterdam metropolitan area

    Get PDF
We study the relationship between cultural heritage and city structure in a residential sorting model. Contrary to previous research, we find that all income groups attach a large value to the proximity of urban heritage while there are important differences associated with other household characteristics. In line with previous research, we find that all households attach value to the share of high-income households in neighborhoods. Our approach covers both elements and we use the estimated version to investigate the overall impact of cultural heritage on within-city structure. We simulate the housing market equilibrium in a counterfactual situation without spatial differences in the presence of cultural heritage. The results suggest that without highly valued inner city amenities, households’ location choice in European cities, such as Amsterdam, would be much more similar to US cities

Pension plans and the retirement replacement rates in the Netherlands

This study compares the expected retirement replacement rates of several cohorts of Dutch employees at the time of their planned retirement with the 'actual' replacement rates based on available pension records. We find that using reasonable indexation rates, the expected replacement ratesare higher than the one we compute. Larger discrepancies are found for younger cohorts. We decompose the difference between the expected and 'actual' replacement rates and find that the mismatch is related to poor institutional knowledge for the whole sample. We also show the role of assumptions on institutions and on wage profiles in determining our results.

The external effects of inner-city shopping centers:Evidence from the Netherlands

Shopping center redevelopment is inevitable to remain attractive for consumers. In this paper, we investigate the external effects of shopping center redevelopment on nearby residential property prices. Using a difference-in-difference empirical framework, we find the redevelopment has positive external effects on nearby property prices. We find the price of a property located next to a redeveloped shopping center increases by 1.43% on average just after redevelopment. Our results indicate that these positive external effects wear off rather rapidly across space and over time. This suggests that shopping center redevelopment plays a substantial, but limited, role in combating neighborhood deprivation

Global existence conditions for a non-local problem arising in statistical mechanics

We consider the evolution of the density and temperature of athree-dimensional cloud of self-interacting particles. This phenomenon ismodelled by a parabolic equation for the density distributioncombining temperature-dependent diffusion and convection drivenby the gradient of the gravitational potential. This equation iscoupled with Poisson's equation for the potential generated by thedensity distribution. The system preserves mass by imposing azero-flux boundary condition. Finally the temperature is fixed byenergy conservation, that is, the sum of kinetic energy(temperature) and gravitational energy remains constant in time. This model is thermodynamically consistent, obeying the first and thesecond law of thermodynamics. We prove local existence anduniqueness of weak solutions for the system, using a Schauderfixed-point theorem. In addition, we give sufficient conditions forglobal in time existence and blow-up for radially symmetricsolutions. We do this using a comparison principle for anequation for the accumulated radial mass
