    Self-concept clarity and women\u27s sexual well-being

    The purpose of this study was to examine the role of self-concept clarity, a core structural aspect of self-concept, in women\u27s sexual well-being. A convenience sample of 261 women aged 18 years and over {M=25.8, &pound;D=7.9) completed an online survey that measured self-concept clarity, three aspects of sexual well-being (sexual self-ef&ntilde;cacy, sexual self-esteem and sexual satisfaction), and four structural dimensions of sexual identity (commitment, synthesis/integration, exploration, and orientation identity uncertainty). A series of multiple mediation analyses, followed by post-hoc bootstrap tests of the difference between mediation effects, revealed that self-concept clarity is indirectly related to the measures of sexual well-being, and that these relationships are mediated by the two &quot;investment-related&quot; dimensions of sexual identity: commitment and synthesis/integration. These results suggest that women with a more broadly and coherently integrated sexual identity are also better able to make healthy and positive choices in the sexual domain and experience more satisfaction with their sex lives, i^ore generally, the results highlight the potential importance of including structural aspects of self-concept in explanations of women\u27s sexual well-being.<br /

    Why are some people with neurological illness more resilient than others?

    The current qualitative study was designed to evaluate the coping strategies of people living with a chronic progressive neurological illness and their carers. The neurological illnesses were Huntington&rsquo;s disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson&rsquo;s disease. Participants included 15 people who showed high levels of adjustment and 15 who showed low levels of adjustment. Participants were selected from an earlier study, to ensure that they satisfied the inclusion criteria for the current study. Interviews were completed to determine the strategies used to cope with the demands of the illness. Participants who demonstrated good adjustment were more likely to draw on social support to provide them with the resources to deal with the illness. In contrast, those who evidenced poor adjustment were more likely to draw on external supports to complete tasks for them. The implications of these findings for people with chronic neurological illnesses and their families are discussed.<br /

    Remaja adalah individu yang berusia 13-18 tahun. Menurut PBB, perkawinan pada remaja secara umum didefinisikan sebagai pernikahan yang dilakukan di bawah umur 18 tahun. Definisi ini tidak terbatas pada masalah perbedaan budaya, benua ataupun area. Terlepas dari faktor apapun yang menyebabkan individu terjebak dalam perkawinan, praktik perkawinan remaja ini memiliki dampaknya tersendiri bagi yang bersangkutan. Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mendapatkan gambaran dampak psikologis dari perkawinan remaja di Jawa Timur. Metode penelitian yang digunakan di dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Pada penelitian ini, variabel yang akan diteliti dampak psikologis pada perkawinan remaja yang akan digali secara mendalam. Untuk memungkinkan analisis data antar subjek, maka subjek penelitian akan berjumlah dua subjek dari masing-masing daerah. Total jumlah subjek adalah enam orang yang tersebar di Kota Surabaya, Kabupaten Jombang dan Kabupaten Gresik. Teknik sampling yang digunakan adalah pengambilan sampel bola salju. Manfaat dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memperkaya referensi dan pengetahuan mengenai perkawinan remaja di Jawa Timur. Manfaat penelitian ini adalah dapat menjadi acuan untuk intervensi dalam penurunan angka perkawinan remaja di Jawa Timur. Sehingga dalam tujuan jangka panjang diharapkan penelitian ini mampu memberikan kesadaran bagi setiap orang, terutama peran pemerintah dalam pencegahan praktik pernikahan di usia muda

    Integrating Emerging Areas of Nursing Science into PhD Programs

    The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science aims to “facilitate and recognize life-long nursing science career development” as an important part of its mission. In light of fast-paced advances in science and technology that are inspiring new questions and methods of investigation in the health sciences, the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science convened the Idea Festival for Nursing Science Education and appointed the Idea Festival Advisory Committee to stimulate dialogue about linking PhD education with a renewed vision for preparation of the next generation of nursing scientists. Building on the 2010 American Association of Colleges of Nursing Position Statement “The Research-Focused Doctoral Program in Nursing: Pathways to Excellence,” Idea Festival Advisory Committee members focused on emerging areas of science and technology that impact the ability of research-focused doctoral programs to prepare graduates for competitive and sustained programs of nursing research using scientific advances in emerging areas of science and technology. The purpose of this article is to describe the educational and scientific contexts for the Idea Festival, which will serve as the foundation for recommendations for incorporating emerging areas of science and technology into research-focused doctoral programs in nursing

In light of fast-paced advances in science and technology that are inspiring new questions and methods of investigation in the health sciences, the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science convened the Idea Festival for Nursing Science Education and appointed the Idea Festival Advisory Committee (IFAC) to stimulate dialogue about linking PhD education with a renewed vision for preparation of the next generation of nursing scientists. Building on the 2005 National Research Council report Advancing The Nation\u27s Health Needs and the 2010 American Association of Colleges of Nursing Position Statement on the Research-Focused Doctorate Pathways to Excellence, the IFAC specifically addressed the capacity of PhD programs to prepare nursing scientists to conduct cutting-edge research in the following key emerging and priority areas of health sciences research: omics and the microbiome; health behavior, behavior change, and biobehavioral science; patient-reported outcomes; big data, e-science, and informatics; quantitative sciences; translation science; and health economics. The purpose of this article is to (a) describe IFAC activities, (b) summarize 2014 discussions hosted as part of the Idea Festival, and (c) present IFAC recommendations for incorporating these emerging areas of science and technology into research-focused doctoral programs committed to preparing graduates for lifelong, competitive careers in nursing science. The recommendations address clearer articulation of program focus areas; inclusion of foundational knowledge in emerging areas of science in core courses on nursing science and research methods; faculty composition; prerequisite student knowledge and skills; and in-depth, interdisciplinary training in supporting area of science content and methods

    Outcomes after hip or knee replacement surgery for osteoarthritis: A prospective cohort study comparing patients quality of life before and after surgery with age-related population norms

    Objective: To compare the health-related quality of life of people with osteoarthritis before and after primary total hip and knee replacement surgery with that of the general Australian population. Design: A prospective cohort study. Setting: Three Sydney hospitals, public and private. Participants: Patients with osteoarthritis undergoing primary total hip (n = 59) and knee (n = 92) joint replacement surgery. Main outcome measure: Medical Outcomes Study Short Form (SF-36) scores before and 12 months after joint replacement surgery (compared with population norms). Results: Patients in each age group showed a significant improvement in health-related quality of life after joint replacement surgery in most scales of the SF-36, particularly physical function, role physical and bodily pain. SF-36 scores for the 42 hip-replacement patients aged 55-74 years improved to equal or exceed the population norm on all scales. SF-36 scores of the 52 knee replacement patients aged 55-74 years improved, but physical function and bodily pain scores remained significantly worse than the population norm. SF-36 scores for both hip (n = 17) and knee (n= 40) replacement patients aged 75 years and over improved significantly, becoming similar to population norms for this age group. Conclusions: Total hip or knee replacement for osteoarthritis significantly improves patient health and well-being at 12 months after surgery. Age alone should not be a barrier to surgery
